Scheduling??

I was reading my 5 week notice from the Bump for Adam.  They were talking about having a nap/sleep/feeding schedule. I thought that at this point we were supposed to let them run the show, eat and sleep on demand.  I know you can track when they eat/sleep, and we are keeping track of feeding and diapers. I'm having a hard time though trying to keep track of sleeping.  So I have 2 questions.  1.) Are you trying to get your baby on a schedule/routine already?  2.) How do you keep track of baby's sleep?  TIA!!

Re: Scheduling??

  • Oh wow, I haven't thought that far yet. I'm still in survival mode. LOL. He is sleeping for longer stretches at night now that he is bigger than his birth weight and I no longer have to wake him up every 2-3 hours for feedings. Wee!!! FX'd he keeps sleeping... But that is more accident than planning so I'm going to follow this thread and see what the pros are doing.

So far bb girl has set up her own sched and it's working pretty well so far.
Wakes up around 8 eats breakfast and 2nd breakfast around 10-11 then nap time from noon to 3 then eats and is awake for a bit and naps a little then eats again before 8/9 then goes to sleep for the night. Hopefully she'll be like this for a while but you never know.
    She's 3wks and I know soon this'll all change.
  • DS wasn't predictable until 4 mo or so. I do wish I had tracked his sleep sooner though as maybe I would've been able to discern more of a pattern early on. 5 weeks is incredibly early though-- I tend to think that most babies aren't on much of a routine at that point. Some babies are less predictable than others too.

  • I wouldn't say that I'm putting LO on a schedule. That's far too rigid, IMHO, and just asking for extra frustration. I'm trying for to get us into a routine of sorts. I don't have a choice, really, since as of Monday when DH goes back to work I'll be juggling a 2 year old plus a newborn by myself for 10-12 hours a day. I'm trying to feed DS2 every 2 hours during the day, and try to keep him up when he's awake. At night I make sure that he is fed, changed, and upstairs in the RnP between 10 and 11 pm so that I can attempt to get some decent sleep. He's been waking up around 2 am and 6 am most days, which really isn't too bad for me sleep-wise.

  • I think eat, play, sleep is about all we will manage when DS2 is a few weeks old. DS1 went to 3-4 naps a day around 4 months with more of a predictable "schedule" around then. Really his schedule was that if he was up for long enough he needed a nap. We had a night time routine and bed time around then too.

@ccip82: Bacon and eggs? Maybe pancakes on special occasions? She sounds very mature for her age.

Lol I feed her formula. She eats about 3-4oz every feeding
@jwp325 oh no, she eats a lot more than 4x a day. She'll take little naps then wake up and eat but I just posted up a general idea of her routine.
  • We tried to get DD on a schedule early but we're not opposed to getting off of it if she seems to want something different.  So far though, we've pretty much stayed on schedule but she's only 2 weeks old and I've read newborns especially don't respond to a schedule.  We're hoping it sticks but if not, we'll work through it.  Right now, she sleeps and plays in between 3 hour feeds during the day and sleeps between 4 hour feeds at night.  She doesn't always fall right asleep but tends to stay asleep once she dozes off.  For us, it works, but if what you're doing works for you and your baby I wouldn't stress!  Mom knows best :)

  • We seem to have a routine as well.  He wakes up, we change him, feed him, and then play with him if he's awake.  I may have to switch up the feeding and playing, but he cries from the diaper change and won't stop until he eats.  I also don't want to play with him when he has a dirty diaper.  Hmm…need to put some thought into this.

  • My baby actually took to scheduling pretty well.  At first, he wasn't demanding to eat often enough, so we started waking him for feedings by the clock, at 3, 6, 9, and 12 (am and pm.)  He now wakes to hunger as a baby should, but he seems to have gotten into the habit of eating around those times.

    Jealous :(
  • The only "schedule" we have is that we try and keep DS more awake after 5pm so that we can do bath and bedtime starting at 7. But that changes every day for many reasons. I don't know that we were able to keep to that once in the last seven days.

  • We're in a routine, but definitely not a "schedule". Ds is 5 weeks old, I basically nurse on demand which throughout the day is every 1-2 hours, and at night we get 2-4 hours stretches. My little guy doesn't seem to be a good daytime napper though. He takes just a couple short naps during the day. :-/

  • The only bit of a routine that we have is in the evening. We try to keep Hudson awake between his last two evening feeds and do playtime, bath and pjs. Then after his 830ish feeding we rock and lay him down. Some days it works, some days not. At this point though we're still taking sleep any way possible!

  • Out of curiousity with ur ladies night feedings when u "put them to bed" where do u put them? Dd usually sleeps from 930 to 1 am. Problem is she doesn't do well on her own yet so we just let her sleep at that time on one of us. After tht we do the cradle in our room. I've tried to go to ednwih her before 1 am and she jut fusses and seems to have an extra eating session if I do that. But reading what u guys are doing it sounds like we should try and put her down maybe on her own?

  • We put Adam down in the RNP in our bedroom. It works well and he goes to sleep quickly. I'm thinking we won't put him on his own until he is 3 or 4 months old.

This is pretty much what I've been attempting to do. The first week (when I had help at home with the 2 y.o.) it was easy, the second week didn't go quite so smoothly…and his nighttime sleep showed the change…wide awake from 1am-4am! I'm really hoping to get back on track this week.

We did the same thing with LO from the beginning. He'll be one month on Tuesday and he's still following the same schedule. It's nice to know others have attempted the "3-hour schedule" routine so early. IMO I really feel like it's paying off because both LO and I are happy and healthy.
  • Very jealous of you guys and your routine. My DS is only 10 days old and his routine seems to be sleep all day (I wake him up every 2-3 hours to feed) and then fuss and want to eat every 15 minutes to an hour all night long ha.
