Can you feel contractions only in your back?

I have been having rhythmic pain in my back all day and it does not subside by switching positions. However, I have been trying to pay attention and I don't feel my stomach tightening (like I do with BH) nor do I really feel pain in my stomach. I have been crampy but it doesn't feel like a contraction. I also woke up to damp underwear and changed and put in a panty liner and they have been damp all day but I can't tell what it is exactly. When I wipe there is nothing on the toilet paper (sorry if TMI). Is it possible to only feel contractions in your back? I'm not even 35 weeks so I really hope I am not in labor and double hope I'm not missing something important. Thanks ladies!

Re: Can you feel contractions only in your back?

  • I called the on call DR and she basically said it's my call. I have an appointment Monday, just uncertain on if I want to push it or not. Never had this with DD.

  • When my labor started with my son, it was like mild cramps in my lower back.  Turned out he was op, and my entire labor was terrible back labor.   Can you time them?

  • My labor was entirely in my back until I was about 8 cms. She was OP.
  • Depending on baby's position you can definitely feel contractions only in your back. Try to time them. If they are coming at a regular interval, I'd go get checked out, especially with the damp undies.

  • I'd also suggest timing them. I never experienced labor pains just in my back but I know back labor is a thing.

  • Are they getting worse?  Have you tried timing them at all?  Is it just pain, or do you feel like the pain comes in waves?

If it were me I'd take a really warm shower, drink some water and see how I feel after that.  You can have labor all in your back - I had mostly back labor with my kids, but I feel like you'll pretty much know when it's for real.

  • You said your crampy, what do they feel like? My contractions started as menstrual like cramps and didn't turn into what I thought contractions would feel like until about 6 hours before birth. You have enough symptoms that I would head to l&d to be sure

  • I had back labor the whole time with DD- which no one had warned me about. I kept thinking I wasn't having real contractions just back spasms - I would go in for peace of mind at the very least.
  • I had back labor with DD, but it started as cramping in the front, like a period.  However, in our childbirth class the instructor said that labor can start as a backache, especially if it's hurting in periodic cramps, and to get checked out if you have it.  The fact that you seem to be leaking on top of it would make me go in...

  • If you are damp you should go in to make sure you're not ruptured. With my first, it took me 12 hours to figure out I was leaking fluid and ideally baby is out within 24 hours of rupture. Go get checked!

  • Yeah my last labour started with back pains. I knew is was labour as I was induced!
