Reading to baby

I'm a teacher so my poor child will be exposed to all sorts of educational material starting Uhhhm now! :) LO has been able to hear since Tuesday so we are already behind! Plus I dropped and eff bomb in the car the other day! I've got some damage control to do!! LoL - does anyone read anything fun or play music for the baby yet?

Re: Reading to baby

  • I've read a few books and DH is huge on playing classical music for baby. I also bought a baby Einstein aquarium that want to have playing by my belly to bring baby extra comfort after birth. You're fine, you are starting very early! I have a little bit of road rage so my vocabulary is also quite colorful, I am trying to tone it down but it's going to be challenging.

  • My 17 month old brings me books to read to him so LO is also getting them just because LO can't run off. I'm not going out of my way to read to LO, and I didn't go out of my way to read to DS in the womb, but he loves his books and loves to "read" them.

  • I didn't read to DS while I was pregnant with him, but we read to him every night before bed and before naps on weekends. So I guess this baby is getting the benefit of that. My language was pretty bad before DS and I never worried about his hearing it in the womb. I still slip up and curse every now and again around him now, but I'm getting better.

  • I haven't started reading to LO but s/he hears me lecture everyday so that's kinda similar right?

  • I talk to it when I'm by myself in the car. Sometimes I sing. I'm a terrible singer. I have no idea when this sharkbaby can hear me.

  • I never shut up so this lo hears everything. My talking to the dogs drives DH crazy. And I'm sure I will have to clean up my vocabulary when he gets here. I also have a potty mouth.

  • I guess baby gets secondhand reading exposure from when I read to DS. I did start reading to DS as young infant as part of his bedtime routine.

I've gone over 3 years without DS repeating the f-word so far so I'm not worried about this one coming out of the womb cussing at the nurses.
  • I read to DD everyday, so that'll have to work for new baby too. I wouldn't worry about cursing. It's not like baby will come out actually knowing anything you said to it.

    BFP#3 10/29/13!  Beta#1 at 4w5d - 2141, beta#2 at 5w1d - 7651!  U/S 11/21/13 showed baby measuring 2 days ahead with a heartbeat of 127 bmp!
  • I think I'll read every night once they're out of the womb, but I don't know how helpful it would be at this point in time...
  • Meh. I don't plan on curbing the cursing until LO is old enough to repeat it. I will definitely be reading and singing to him/her but not quite yet lol.

  • Well, DH and I read to our DD every night at bedtime and she usually wants me to sing her a song too so the baby can hear all of that. Plus DD loves to have "dance class" so there's lots of music at our house, not to mention that she is obsessed with the Frozen soundtrack!

  • My baby is going to come out swearing like a sailor, if he/she is really listening.
    =))

Mine, too. DH and I were talking about this yesterday. Our baby's first word will probably be "fuck." As hilarious as that might be to us, I don't think the grandparents would think it was cute. We're definitely going to have to tone down the swearing, if we can...

  • DS is 19 months and for a while now has been repeating words that I didn't intentionally teach him, like bra. It's kind of funny, but it makes me a lot more aware of what I say and what he hears when the tv is on.

  • I'm a teacher too, and I told my 3rd graders that the baby could hear them and me, so that they needed to be extra careful not to get crazy, because I did NOT want my baby to get used to a mama with a loud mean teacher voice :) haha.  I read out loud to my students, so LO is getting that benefit, and I will surely use it as an excuse to make more time for reading to my students.

I've also heard from teacher friends that their children were very sound sleepers as babies, probably due to the noisy classroom sounds they got used to in the womb.

DH and I plan on reading and playing music for LO at home too, but he/she is definitely getting lots of my voice from my work day.  Maybe he/she will come out multiplying! ;)
  • This LO gets exposed to the colorful world of middle school. Oh the joys of teaching while pregnant. DS used to love reading books and now I can barely get him to lay with me yo read.

  • Man, I guess this baby just missed hearing all of Romeo and Juliet by a couple of weeks! I teach freshman English.
  • I didn't even read to DD regularly until after she was 1. She had no interest, I felt like I was just reading to myself. Now I read to her every night so I guess I'm inadvertently reading to LO #2.  I'll let you know in 15 years who is smarter.

    Exactly!

I'm in technology sales, I figure this fetus hears enough about Apple computers that (by this reasoning) it should be born and immediately employed by the Genius Bar.

  • I read bed time stories to my kids most days and the kids like to include baby. But I also listen to A LOT of music quite a few times a day. Of all kinds too. My kids already love music so I bet this LO will too. As for cursing lol yikes....thank goodness he/she won't be able to remember and repeat for a good long while.
