5 yr age gap?

Any moms with a 5 yr age gap (or around there) between kids? How do they get along? Pros/cons? Or anyone grow up with this age gap between siblings? How close are you to them?

Re: 5 yr age gap?

  • I have 3 kids...6 years apart. They fight like they are 2 years apart. But they get along lie they are 2 years apart too. I think a pro for me, is that I didn't really have to split my time between a toddler and a new baby. They are old enough they do there thing, and I do mine with the baby. Con would be, everytime I have a new baby, I'm kinda starting all over.

We are having more kids and this time we will do a little closer together. Maybe 2 or 3 years apart.

Who knows though, we've been dtd, without protection, so I may be jinxing myself.

  • Me, my brother and sister are all 5 years apart. I rarely remember fighting/arguing with either of them but we also didn't play together much. We all get a long great we never fight but I wouldn't say we're super close since we are all at such different stages in life. I am the oldest I am starting my family while my sister just started her first year of college.

  • My sister and I are 5 years apart, as are my husband and his sister. Our parents aimed for closer, but it didn't work out. It was rough when we were all kids, but by the time our little sisters got to college, we were able to reach a good place. There's still occasionally ick factor, but now it's less crazy. I'd prefer our kids be closer in age.

  • My brother and I are 4 1/2 years apart in age and 5 years in school.  We are close.  We fought, but there is less to fight about.  Also, I got the first 4 1/2 years of my parents sole attention and he got his last 5 years of school of their sole attention (to a point).  Now, we talk and have fun and it's great.  I plan on having my kids about 4 years apart.

  • My girls are 4 years apart. It was easier for me adjusting to that gap than this time with DD2 and DS (they are only 3 years). A year can make a big difference and especially throwing in personality type. I agree with pp's that DD2 always wants to be just like DD1, which can drive her nuts. But, they really get along great. It helps that DD1 has school, so she gets her time away to be her own person.
  • My brother and I are 6 years apart and it felt like I was an only child. He was off to college when I was starting Jr High. We were never super close, but we get along just fine. He has a 7 year old and it kinda sucks that our kids weren't closer in age. I'm hoping they will still play together and be buddies. My husband and his sister are 4 years apart, and I think I'd prefer that age gap.

  • My brother and I are 4 years apart. We bickered constantly until I was in high school. He just knew how to get under my skin! But I was a freshman when he was a senior and someone was mean to me my first day of highschool. He laid into them and we have been close ever since :) he was the only one allowed to pick on me I guess! Now we live in the same town and see each other every week. He LOVES MJ and being an uncle. I think our age gap is perfect, plus my parents only had one year where we were in college at the same time!
  • We have a 5 year gap between the boys. At first Jack wanted nothing to do with the baby but over the last 2 or 3 months he has been a HUGE help and has really bonded with his "baby bruddah". He loves holding him and tickling him and playing peekaboo. I had never planned on having this big if a gap but life just got in the way.

  • My kids are twice as much as that apart.  I love it. My son got the only child experience, and still gets the benefit of a sibling. She's getting a kind of only child experience because her needs are so different from him. He's so helpful and loving. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

  • Mine are 5 years apart. DS is an amazing older brother and just adores his sister. And it helps that he's pretty independent so if we are rushing out of the house for example he can pretty much get himself together and into his car seat, which is a huge help. My brother and I were 7 years apart but we have a sister that is in between. She and I were super close so he kind of got left out. We are better now that we are older but still arent super close.
  • Thanks for the info! I am 3-4 yrs apart from my 3 siblings (4 yrs from the oldest, 3 yrs younger than the second, I am the third, then 3 years older than my little brother) and we are all pretty close except the oldest and youngest. Just wondered if there was a common thread!
