So, baby girl is great at drinking from a spouted sippy cup, but I want her to learn how to drink from a straw cup, but am at a loss as to how to teach her. I tried just giving her the straw cup and seeing what she would do, but she just chewed the straw and then pulled it out of the cup. Any tips? Is my baby the only one who doesnt know how to do this yet?

  • Mine can't do it either. I put it away and will try again in a month.

  • I had no idea how to go about this. I just showed him how to suck on straw with real exaggerated movements. Once he was slightly successful one time, he caught on.

  • My LO learned from watching her cousin. She saw him drinking from a straw cup and wanted to do it too. Chewed on the straw til she figured it out. Said cousins mom said she taught him by getting a juice box with a straw and squeezing it til some juice came to the top.
  • I just kept offering it and he got it pretty quick. Now he's obsessed and wants to drink anything we have with a straw. Just keep offering.

  • May be a dumb question...but why do they need to drink from straw cups? Sippys work just fine for us and then we will transition to open cup at some point I guess. Maybe I am missing something?

  • Emma can drink from a straw if we go to a restaurant but at home she tries to drink it like a sippy by tipping it up so we just do sippies at home

  • DD is kind of the opposite.  She won't drink out of a spout cup.  We only use straw cups where the straw can't be removed while drinking.  If your LO keeps pulling the straw out, then that might be something to consider.

  • L learned by drinking out of an applesauce pouch.

  • My LO can't use a straw either.  I try every now and then, but he isn't interested.  We also don't use a sippy.
  • I put a little water in a straw and dropped it in her mouth and then let her suck on the straw. Just basically showing her that there is something in the straw. I'm sure it helped that she was used to sucking on the syringe for her reflux medicine, but she's been using a straw since she was 5 months old. Won't use anything else.

You don't NEED to have LO learn a straw cup, but you do want her to learn how to drink out of a regular cup at some point.

  • Z did the straw when I first gave it to him in the restaurant. I was surprised. We do have the Playtex trainer straw cup though. You can squeeze it so they know something comes out and then they suck it out. Z will still tip the straw cups back so he's only allowed to control the non-leak ones. The playtex straw cup does best with water. any other liquids can seep out the straw if you put the lid on tight. Seems to be a pressure issue (i.e. milk sitting out for a bit warms up and pushes out the straw), at least that's my theory :)
