Breastfeed for?

My moto is Miranda's moto " if they can ask for it they are probably too old for it"
A lot of people I know personally and through TB have done it until 2 years! That just seems crazy. (Crazy to me/ for me)

FTM how long do you PLAN to breastfeed for?

Re: How long did you....

  • I plan to breastfeed for as long as my baby wants.  If she self-weans, so be it.  But I will try to do it for as long as possible and if that last until she's 2 - great!

Both DD and DS stopped around 13 months. Which was fine by me as I was pretty burnt out by then.

Eta: I'm hoping this new baby follows its siblings.

    Baby 1 - 10/2010 | Baby 2 - 8/2012 | Baby 3 - 6/2014 | Baby 4 - EDD 8/2016 - MC 12-27-2015 | Baby 5 - : 9/2016

I BF for 12 months. I may have gone longer if pumping at work didn't suck so much!

  • I do it for 3-4 months, that's my personal limit.
  • It was 12 mo when DD was ready to wean. I'm hoping for at least a year with this one.
  • Still doing it at 17 months. It's just dry nursing now since I've dried up, but she's not ready to give it up.

I used to think the same thing. But my daughter "asked" for it at 10-11 months old. She definitely wasn't too old for it then.
  • @brunoBabies that's my style.... I don't knock parents for doing it longer. Just curious as to why. I stopped with DD around 9 months ( just pumped after that) the day after her first bday all bottles and pumping supplies were gone.

  • I breastfed for about 13 months, then weaned. By then, breast feeding was no big deal, but I was so over pumping (which I had to do bc I work full time)

  • I nursed DS for 18 months. I'd love to go longer with baby #2 if hubby is more willing to share my boobies this time.

  • I'm shooting for at least 6 months but hopefully no longer than a year. I'm a FTM so we'll see how it goes. My mind might change once LO gets here.

  • DD#1 6mo, DD#2 7mo, DD#3 14mo

Hoping to hit the year mark again with #4

  • My DS is 20 months old and is still nursing..Also he started "asking" (aka signing) for milk when he was like 6 months old so I feel like that standard of when to stop is kind of silly..

    Same here.

  • I am a FTM and I am hoping to do 6 months to a year... I doubt I would be interested in going longer than that. I think it's a big commitment and a personal choice so do what's most comfortable for you.
  • I bf for 15 months and then she self weaned. I would have gone longer, up to 2 years. We'll see how long #2 goes for, hopefully at least 12 months.

Married 6/28/08, TTC 7/10, BFP 11/30/11! Charlotte Rose born on 8/4/12! TFAS 8/13, BFP 10/14/13! Lori Anne Catherine born on 6/13/14!

  • Since I'm going back to work I'm aiming for at least 3 months.  I'm going to play it by ear after that.

  • Hoping to for 6-9 months. I have been told the milk is no longer as beneficial after that....it is suposedly not as dense with nutrients etc.
  • DD breastfeed until 15mos
    DS did until 25ishmos
This LO I would like to make it to around 18mos ( everywhere in the world aside from US recommends to breastfeed to 2years old)

    #1 DD June 2009
    #2 DS July 2011
    #3 DD June

  • 13 months and then I'm done. Pumping twice a day at work got old. Also I wanted my boobs back :)
  • The WHO recommends breastfeeding for atleast 6 months to 2 years. I think it would be awesome to make it up to two years but I'm aiming for at least a year.

  • Definitely three months because I'm on maternity leave for that time. I'd like to do one year, but would be OK with anything over six months.
  • Hoping for a year

  • I breastfed my first son for 1 year, but had to start supplementing with formula when he was around 4-5 months old, so it wasn't exclusive.  I hope to be able to breastfeed this baby exclusively for at least a year and will likely go until he self weans.

  • I am shooting for at least a year with my twins and then we will see where we are at :) I am with you on the asking for it!
  • I breastfed DS1 for 13 months and that is approximately how long I plan on breastfeeding DS2.

Breastfeeding was a big fail for me with DD.  She never learned to latch and cried bloody murder everytime we tried (it was hell).

But I exclusively pumped for 11 months and think I deserve a big darn medal for that one.

I'm hoping to BF this LO for a year.

@Snowpants You DO deserve a medal.  I hated pumping so much.  EPing seems like SO much work.

I breasted both DD and DS for 13 months.  Wanted to go for longer (maybe closer to 18) but they both self-weaned.  Twins are a whole new ballgame…hoping for 1 year, but will take it one day at a time.

  • I'm still BFing my 25-month-old, although we're down to once a day. It was sooo hard at first, and my first goal was 3 months. Then 6m, then a year. And kudos to pumpers! I HATED being hooked up to that thing.
  • 6 months to a year.  I will be at work full time as a teacher, and pumping during the school day (with a room full of teenagers) will be hard.  I want to do at least 6 months, more if I can manage the pumping.  I am thinking of doing something like I still breastfeed baby's breakfast and dinner after the 6th month mark, but baby will get other things during the day when it is with my mom.  Has anyone done something like that?
  • I nursed DD#1 for 3 weeks, and DD#2 for 13 months. My short term goal this time is 6 months, and then I'll take it day by day like I did with DD#2. When I don't put pressure on myself about it, I tend to have more success.

  • Wow, I'm impressed with everyone who has breastfed so long! I had supply issues with DD, and by the time my milk came in she had forgotten how to latch. The BF/pump/formula routine was too much for me those first couple weeks. I pumped for 2 months but had to supplement the whole time.

This time, we plan on trying for a 3rd immediately so I won't BF past 3 months, probably more like 2 months.

  • Maybe my view will change with this one DD was just never interested. Maybe this one will love it and I won't give up haha. There is no such thing as never with parenting!

  • I am a FTM and really have no idea. I'm going to play it by ear. Whatever is best for baby and I. My mom said she had a hard time breast feeding (supply issues) and couldn't breast feed any of us for a very long time (I think I was the longest at 3 months). So, I'm trying not to have any preconceived notions on what I "want" or "should" be doing, as not to set myself up as a failure or for disappointment later on.

  • DD- about 10 months. I got pregnant with my son when she was about 7 mos, and my supply tanked when I hit the second tri.
DS- 12 months,he lost interest and weaned himself.
  • @katieluc106 Honestly, I don't see a point after that. I don't knock people who choose to do it longer and I know I'm the minority, but they say the first three months are the most beneficial, so that's why I chose that. DS was also partially formula fed from day one due to jaundice and the fact that I had him out and about since the first day we were home. I don't bf in public so if we were going to be out I packed formula. I will add that he was way healthier than any of my fiends kids and never got sick til 14 months, so clearly he was fine with being in public and only 3 months of bfing :).
  • I would like to do it for at least six months, ideally at least a year. With DS he was able to get some of my milk and some donor milk for the first 12 weeks. He aged out of getting the donor milk and the milk well dried up for me. So if it doesn't work out I know it isn't the end of the world. But I want it to.
