September 2013 Moms

Saw the GI specialist today.

We have been waiting for this appointment for 2 months today so I was pretty excited it was finally the day!!! The Dr had a lot of got advice and fully explained reflux to us. DDs reflux has gotten so much better in the past month but we wanted to keep the appointment because we knew as soon as we cancelled it the reflux would get bad again. It was nice to just be able to understand it more and find out what we could do to keep helping her.

He told us that we could also try to take her off the alimentum formula because he doesn't think it's a milk allergy (than goodness my bank account was hurting from the 27 dollars a can twice a week!!) we're going to start similac spit up.

We told him we started her on solids as well to help the reflux at 4 months and he agreed that it can make a huge difference. This is the one thing that bothered me that he told us to do... He told us to give her solids breakfast lunch and dinner time and we only had to give her 14-18oz of formula for her to get the vitamins she needs... I just can imagine almost cutting her formula intake in half!!! I told DH I'm not going to do that but I will continue to give her solids at breakfast and dinner time along with her 26oz of formula. Has anyone heard of doing this at 4 months, 14-18oz is about 6 3oz bottles... DD would flip!

The other thing he told us to try and do is wean her from her meds. She's on Prevacid in the morning and Zantac in the evening. It would be nice to get her off meds too but it makes me nervous. I feel like we were starting to figure it all out but now I feel like we're about to change it all up! Hopefully it works!

Re: Saw the GI specialist today.

  • This is us exactly! A is on Prevacid/Zantac combo now after a trip to the ER. She has been on alimentum for months and then suddenly started projectile vomiting without a fever. Her reflux was definitely worsening but that came out of nowhere. We have to make an appt. with the GI specialist and go from there. I'm nervous starting solids early though because she chokes often on formula. I really can't wait for her to (hopefully) outgrow it. So no advice but I feel for you. I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

  • E's doctor recommended at his 4 month appointment that I make an appointment with the specialist sometime around when he's 5 months because he wants us to see the GI doc if his reflux hasn't improved by 6 months and it usually takes 4-6 weeks to get in with him.

We've been doing Zantac 2x per day and Enfamil AR for about two months now.  It helps as far as him being in pain and refusing to eat (that was horrible) but he's still on the skinny side and spits up A LOT (I would say 20-30 times per day).

I've been feeding him baby oatmeal in the evenings (around 5-6) after his bottle but he still spits that up just as much as the formula, so I don't know how much it really helps.  I have noticed that he's been spitting up more the last few weeks because he is going crazy moving around and trying to sit up.  All that core exercise has him spewing all over the place.

Hope some of that advice works for you...reflux is not fun!!!

  • Does she have GERD? DS does, and that's the only time I've ever heard doctors recommend starting solids or thickening feeds for non-dairy related reflux.
FTR, we're still planning on waiting to start solids unless it gets worse. We're electing to sticking with rice cereal added to two bottles of breastmilk daily.
When I supplemented, we used similac for spit up and he seemed to do well with it. We ended up doing 2 oz of the spit up formula with 2 oz regular formula because it was too thick otherwise.
    Good luck!
