Refusing Solids

So my LO is now refusing to eat anything unless it's in a bottle. Any ideas or suggestions?
My H and I played music, made airplane and car noises, praised her once we got the good in her mouth but nothing is working. I'm at a loss and the babysitter is even having problems.

Re: Refusing Solids

  • Thanks! I agree when I read everyone saying their LOs love solids I wonder what I'm doing wrong. I hate feeling that way. The doctors tell me she needs to eat it and to only give her 3 bottles a day but if she isn't taking the food I try to just give her another bottle so she doesn't starve. ; (

  • I wouldn't stress about it now.  Just keep offering it and if your LO doesn't take it right now that is ok.  They go through stages.  If it continues for a month maybe consult your pedi.  GL.
  • Like PPs said, keep offering. Try different purees, textures, forms. Sometimes they want to hold it for themselves (a stick of cucumber, carrot, etc.); sometimes they are unsure about the new texture in their mouths; sometimes they just aren't ready. You aren't doing anything wrong. Babies are all different.

About decreasing the formula amount--I am not a doctor, but the recommendation is that formula/BM be their main source of nutrition until they are 1.
  • I kept thinking I was a feeding failure.  I think if she's not feeling good, teething, anything that in any way affects her, she wants nothing to do with food.  Since the tooth that tortured our house came in about ten days ago, she's been eating really well.  I can't imagine cutting back on formula or breastmilk.  I was told to offer milk first, food second.

I'd put a Movember mustache fail, but then
you'd all have to look at it until February.
  • My ped said to not worry about "real" solids until a year. We do 3 meals per day, but not a lot of different texture, etc, partly because he just popped his first tooth and was wincing to chew. Ped said since we're obviously not doing BLW, it's noting to worry about until 1. I think many ladies here are doing BLW so their LO's will be way ahead on solids.

  • My DD did this for a couple weeks. I just tried and didn't make it a big deal if she didn't eat any of it. Have you tries stuff like puffs and those dissolvable biscuits? Maybe she doesn't like being fed? It seemed to be a phase for us and now she will eat mostly anything we feed her.

We haven't tried any of those things. What are the biscuits - do they come in different flavors?

Our LO is pretty picky with food too. And then once we find something she likes, she changes her mind. Right now, she won't eat veggies unless I mix in fruit too. We do some pretty weird combinations, but as long as she eats it...

C is doing this too! He was great with all the veggies - I did them first so that he'd have a good taste for them - but once he tried fruit, it was all over. If we don't mix his dinners with some sort of fruit, he refuses it. (Sigh...he's taking after his mama.). Last night, he ate beef & vegetables mixed with bananas, plums, & grapes. Yuck!

As far as the whole "solids are just for fun" thing...C's food is included as part of his daycare cost. In order for the daycare to get reimbursed for the cost of the food by a state program, they have to adhere to pretty strict state nutrition guidelines. Those guidelines require solids to be offered for breakfast and lunch at 8 months. So now they give him solids and offer him a few ounces of formula with / immediately after his meal, but his total formula intake for the day has definitely dropped 8-10 ounces or so. When I questioned my pedi about it, he said it was fine.

    Who knows?

  • we are struggling with this too..my LO does like the social aspect of eating though...so he is more likely to eat if me and DH are eating too...also he likes to feed himself...we are doing purees and sometimes I will hand him the spoon which is messy but he does get some of it.
