Clothing ? for other twin/high risk mamas

I'm having a hard time deciding what size clothes to buy for the babies. So far I've bought some NB sized essentials such as long sleeved onesies and sleepers. Is anyone planning on getting any preemie sizes? I'm on the fence since I know very well these babies can come early, but then again they have been growing right on track and they may just stay in for the long haul lol.

Re: Clothing ? for other twin/high risk mamas

  • My son was born at 36 weeks 6 sprays and fit in preemie clothes for a month. I do plan on buying about 5 preemie sleepers to add to the 4 I have. If I don't use them I will return or donate them.

  • I'm not buying any preemie stuff till I know. If the babies came now, they'd be too little for clothes, so I figure I would have time to shop if I need to. I'm a nicu nurse, so I guess I have a jaded view :).

  • I was just having a pregnant lady freak out about this the other night. My husband reminded me that if we find out she's coming early or she comes early on her own we can buy a few more smaller-sized clothes then. Why does he have to be so reasonable??
  • I haven't bought preemie clothes yet.  I am trying to wait as long as possible.  I figured when they are that small they need tons of skin-skin contact time, and the other times I would just swaddle them (are you supposed to when they are that small?) with just a diaper on.

  • We were given hand me downs by another twin mom so I have a small collection of preemie clothes. I won't buy anymore unless we need them. I'm sure one of their grandmas would love to be sent on an errand to pick up some preemie clothes if we happen to need more. I felt the same way about preemie diapers. We have NB, but we'll just make a trip to the store if we need smaller ones.

Also, I've noticed that when comparing different brands of clothes they are not all  the same. Some of my NB clothes are on the tiny side so I put them in with the preemie stuff because they look the same size as some labeled preemie.

  • Luckily my hospital is right next to a Babies R Us so I may just hold off and send my husband for a few things if we need it. I figured they don't need clothes while we're in the hospital. But now I'm feeling unprepared!
  • @AbbyPug19 - I know what you mean about feeling unprepared. I was seriously in tears two nights ago saying BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHAT SIZE CLOTHES WE'LL NEEEEEEEEED - and this is totally unlike me!

I think part of it is feeling like I have so little control over when to expect her so my brain is struggling to come up with things to make some sense and order out of it, and stressing about clothes is my brain's way of doing that, I guess.

It sounds like sending your husband over to BRU if the situation warrants it is a great plan. You'll just need a few packs of preemie onesies and you can always order stuff off of Amazon later, too.
  • I bought 4 short sleeve and 4 long sleeve packs of preemie onesies for my twins. Along with 6 preemie outfits that I got super cheap at a Carter's outlet store. I'm going to pack two preemie outfits, a few preemie onesies and then then two new born outfits and some newborn onesies. I'm OCD when it comes to planning.

  • All 6 of my singletons needed preemie for at least a month so we will have about 3-4 P sleepers and a bunch of NB gowns. I will focus on NB for a while. Then 0-3 but that doesn't usually come until about 7-8wks for us.
  • With DD, we weren't sure when she'd be born; we were told she might be as early as 32 weeks. I bought several NB sleepers and gowns; no preemie sizes. Had she been born early, we would have had my mom run out and buy some preemie stuff. Thankfully, she made it to 39 weeks! The NB stuff did fit her for about a month.

  • I think I may pick up a pack of onesies and a couple sleepers just in case. My daughter was born 7lb 2oz at 40w3d and was in NB for over a month so I can't imagine the twins will be very big.
  • I'm having the same dilemma. I want at least a few premie outfits in the house just in case but I don't want to buy them, it feels like asking for trouble or something. Hopefully I get some at my shower!

  • My twins are 4 now. But when I had them, I didn't buy any preemie clothes. They were early and were in preemie clothes for about a month but most NB clothes worked fine. My family picked up a few outfits before we came home. They were in NB clothes FOREVER! About 4 months.

So my advice, buy NB and 0-3months. And if need be, a few preemie outfits after they are born.

Thank you! This was really helpful because I can't figure how much I will need of newborn either. I haven't gotten any bigger clothes because I'm not sure what season we'll be needing anything.
