Prediction pool

A family member suggested this and I think it's a pretty cool idea: people enter a guess for $20 and the winner gets half the pot while the other half goes toward LO's college fund.
This website does all the scoring for you: www.bebepool.com
Anyone else doing something similar?
Interesting to see who thinks I'll go early, late, or have a massive baby...

Re: Prediction pool

  • My family is doing something similar but not to that extent. We just did a $5 pool where everyone guessed when LO would arrive. All $80 or so dollars goes to whoever wins. Just a fun little one! Although, I was slightly upset that my mom picked 8 days after our LOs due date... :-S

  • The website has nothing to do with money (I think that would technically be illegal gambling) - payment is by the honor system.
  • I'm kind of weirded out by asking people to bet $20 on LO's arrival/weight/etc.  It just seems a little rude to me, but to each their own!

  • Eeeh, I think it's a little tacky. My family and friends have already been so generous with gifts for LO I wouldn't feel right asking them an extra $20.

We did www.babybookie.com but aren't doing it for money.  We said we would give a prize to the winner.  It's been really fun!
This would be fine and not make me uncomfortable at all.

  • My close friends have a lil pool going. The losers buy winner and mommy lunch. Nothing too expensive just for fun! There's 4 of us so two people buying the other two's lunches not too bad lol

  • I think it's a cute idea as long as people keep it friendly and light.

  • Why do I feel like people would use this as yet another excuse to touch me?

  • My friends organized their own...but the winner is keeping the money. Doesn't make me feel weird since I'm not getting money from it and it was their idea. I'm glad they're having fun with it.

I have tried to get my mom and dh to do something like this (Sans money. Winner gets lunch) but neither will go for it. They both just stare at me blankly and say "how the hell am I supposed to know if you will go before or after your due date?." To quote my mother "do I look like Nostradamus?"
  • When we had narrowed it down to "34 weeks at the latest" my family started making guesses. For fun, no money or lunch or anything.
    None of them were right.

  • my family, DH, and I did www.babyhunch.com. you can guess on boy/girl, hair/eye color, first name initial, date/time, height/weight. it's pretty cool because it breaks down the votes into a nifty pie chart. (because nerd :-B ) and when LO comes, I enter her stats and it calculates the winner based on total points for who was right. we didn't do money because we're competitive enough!
