  • I know this is completely anecdotal, but I've had conversations with a few different physicians about how they are starting to see cases of pertussis in patients who have received the vaccine/booster only TWO years prior. I've heard it said that CDC recommendations may change to a higher frequency. But like I said, this is just chit chat and not research that I've done.

I actually received the TDaP already this pregnany at my 16 week appointment. My doc (whom I really love) and I decided to get it out of the way. I was immunized in 2011 prior to my pediatrics and labor/delivery rotations in nursing school. I'm pretty militant in my support for full vaccination...but a word of warning...TDaP gives you total "dead arm" for two days. Still sore!

So so sad. I used to teach preschool a few years back (in LA) and there was one specific 4 year old whose mom refused to vaccinate him. There was an outbreak of whopping cough and he got it. He healed just fine but our main concern was for all the mothers of the other kids who had newborn infants (we had 4 parents with infants under 8 weeks old) and of course the babies were with their parents at pick up and thus were technically 'exposed'. Thankfully , the babies were all fine and we were quick to act, but it's so scary. The fact that Polio is back in certain parts of the world also scares the crap out of me. I have an allergy to egg yolks so I can't get the flu shot but I will get every booster I can in preparation l for this baby. And my child will be vaccinated! But those first few months are gonna be scary.
My son is also allergic to egg and gets the flu shot just fine.  The cdc is now saying that it shouldn't be an issue since the amount is microscopic if at all... I would talk to your Dr as this within the last few years..  he used to have to go to his allergist for it but can now go to his ped

Along the lines of vaccines, if your child has been vaccinated can they still get the illness? Not just pertussis but like for measles or polio

I would say vaccines aren't 100% guarantee. When I started nursing school I had to have blood drawn to check that I'm immune to all the diseases I've been vaccinated for. I'm one if those weird people that for some reason never developed immunity to several of the diseases even though I was vaccinated. I had boosters and did it all again when I went back for my RN and I'm still not. Just happens sometimes is what I'm told.
  • Coming late to this convo... totally not flaming this, but did anyone notice this article was from 2010?  I definitely want everyone close to me to get the vaccine, but don't know how to really push the issue or how stringent I should be about non-vac people being around the baby.  What was your rule of thumb? Does anyone has any more recent articles on outbreaks?

  • This girl at work the other night tried to tell me that she stopped getting her son his scheduled vaccines because he started showing signs of autism and after she stopped, he was fine. I called her on BS and so did my night supervisor who was sitting there and almost went HAM on her. We were both like this bish is crazy...we will NOT be making play dates with you and your 2 year old ticking time bomb.

Can you imagine being this idiot's pediatrician? 'Cause you KNOW she didn't get that "diagnosis" from a professional.

  • How did some of you ladies convince your family to get vaccinated? I thought it was a no brainer thay everyone would be open to it and now they aren't wanting to get it. I just don't understand why they are giving me push back on it. I'm just asking the grandparents and our brothers and sisters.

  • Can someone please tell me what the deal is with the rotovirus vaccine being singled out all the time in the comments of these threads? I get the controversy behind flu and HPV, but I've never heard anything about rotovirus...what gives?

@ElTrain5 I would like to know also. As I stated previously, I was weepy upon learning it existed...weepy with happiness. Once you see someone with an ailment, it changes you. I remember my mom asking me to stand next to the couch where my brother was resting so she could go to the bathroom, and his lethargic body just rolling right off. I was terrified. This was in 1993 so not that long ago. Ugh.

  • Yeah, from my not-so-thorough googling, the arguments seems to be "it's just diarrhea", but it sounds like it effects younger children much worse than older people...so why not?

I think it is quite rare and usually a third world disease. Rotavirus causes severe diarrhea but in countries with access to modern medical care it is rarely fatal.
This is not just a rare third world disease.  Rotavirus went through my daughter's daycare twice last winter.  She actually caught it, but it was milder due to her vaccination.
These are the reasons that anti-vaxers don't get this vaccine, not the facts about the disease.
Ohmigawd! Thank you for this clarification, as my head was spinning!

Also, I am sure I have mentioned this to the point of being annoying but Lincoln was hospitalized with what started off just as diarrhea. It took him out SOO fast. They could never determine what it was, just "something viral." Very scary. If there were a vaccine to lessen it, I would have had him get it. Seeing your child hooked up to machines, being interrupted every hour while they're trying to rest, seeing their limp body, all of it was a nightmare. There was no physical way we could keep him hydrated at home from "just some diarrhea." I have a picture of him from the hospital in his little gown. Not sure why I took it and I can't bare to delete it but even seeing it triggers so many scary feelings for me.

Here's my thought process on SIL's new baby and family and friends' new babies. "You want me to get vaccinated? I need to wash my hands? No flash photography? No standing? You want my dog put up? I can't eat by baby?" Etc. Etc. "YOU GOT IT." That's THEIR child. If they want me doing or not doing something, even something crazy, fine! I will happily comply. No questions asked. And I expect people to do the same for me. It's YOUR child. Do what you are comfortable with. No one has a right to hold that baby but you. :)
Can you be a part of my family please?? lol.  I can't believe how everyone is giving me such a hard time about it.  My mom is doing it "just because it's so important (to me)" but otherwise thinks vaccinations aren't good.  Shes crazy.  People keep thinking oh we are safe, we don't need them... Well it only SEEMS like we don't need them because people were vaccinating all over and it WORKED.  I just don't want to be the bitch that keeps her kid from her family, but asking people to get a vaccine they already got as a child I felt like wasn't a big deal, but apparently it is...

This thread actually got me to mention the issue to my Dude. For him, he was like, "give me the list of boosters I need and I'll call the doc the next day." Which I expected. Then I pointed out his mom would have to get these as well if she wanted to see the baby.

He thinks it will be no problem. I'm ... not so convinced. I also don't trust her not to just lie and say she got everything. It's not like I can ask to see her medical paperwork.

She's a lovely woman in general but she is fucking weird about medical stuff. It took two years of convincing to get her to take eye drops that she needs to not go blind -- and yet she complains all the time about how afraid she is she might go blind. (Well, um, you know, THEN YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR FUCKING MEDS.)

And believe me, if we even limit her contact (say, we visit, but limit holding or whatever) based on medical issues we will have his entire bat-shit crazy side of the family complaining about what monsters we are.

    Family can be the worst.

I'm suddenly having issues with my mother too. I told her since she works in a daycare, I would ESPECIALLY like her to be vaccinated. "Nope. I don't pump unnecessary medication into my body. I don't even take Tylenol anymore." Says the woman who has been on anti-depressants and Ritalin for YEARS. Suddenly this year, this is her thing. Well sorry to be a bitch, but you're not touching my baby. My child's life isn't worth your stand against "government issued medications". Thank god my father is a reasonable man and will know how to talk to her to make this work, because I am not having this fight with her.
How does she work in a daycare and not have her vaccines?  Is it not regulated for daycare workers?  It never occurred to me, it seems like daycare workers of all people should have to get vaccines!  I guess I know what I'll be asking the director at my son's school today...
  • We have friends who discussed selectively vaccinating their daughter. We never got confirmation on what they opted for, but we are certain they will probably want to see the baby early on. Do we ask them? I can see it being an awkward convo of course but it worries me. I'm not sure they'd even share the info. How would other handle this? Not sure if it's okay to pose a question branching off of this post???
  • I just sent this link to my family and tried to make it sound as easy as possible..

Not sure how they will react, but my family is pretty science/fact oriented, so this was the best option I had. We shall see.

I type for a living, and they gave me a tdap, flu shot and TB test the same day.  They really beat my ass! lol :)
