A14 crib drama...how much are you spending?

Re: A14 crib drama...how much are you spending?

  • Maybe it's because I'm a FTM but I want to buy a nicer crib, American made with good safety ratings. I think that will land me in the $500/$600 range. I blame the baby bargains book!

But, we spent that much for an accent chair in out bedroom that we rarely use, so I think a crib is more justified.

  • That bird is out of her mind! I don't get how they found a bunch of thrifted items but then want a $1K crib? Our entire set won't cost that much! I found a crib at BRU I like for $400 but although our parents have offered to help, I'd like to try to find it cheaper/wait for a sale.
  • DD's crib is a hand me down from a friend. We actually didn't buy a single piece of furniture for her nursery. Her changing table was mine as a baby and came from my parent's storage locker, along with a rocking chair that belonged to my grandmother. The dresser was my SD's originally.

I don't plan on buying any furniture for this LO, as s/he will be sharing the nursery with dd. LO will sleep in our room for the first six months at least and hopefully by then we can transition dd to a big girl bed.

We would've ended up with an Ikea crib if my parents weren't giving us one. We don't have a lot for furniture, and we were ok with that, luckily we had a lot of people willing to give us furniture, we got a dresser, changing table, glider and crib for free. Guess what, they don't all match. I'm a FTM and the thought of it all "being perfect" is nice, but some of us can't afford "perfect", and an infant isn't going to care if everything matches or not.

Frankly we could afford a $1k crib but I still wouldn't buy one. With utilitarian items luke a crib, after a certain point you're just paying for the name/marketing.

All I need is a safe place for the baby to sleep. I would also like it to not be hideous looking. I can get that for $150 at Ikea.
If money wasn't an issue, (and if we weren't being given one) I definitely wouldn't be buying a 1k crib either. There's so many more things that baby needs that you can buy with that money (and get a crib too)

  • We got last time the Graco Lauren on sale so maybe $150 or so. It converts to a nice toddler bed but I figure I'd just get a regular adult bed after that rather than spend the money on conversion rails too. We recently bought DS an affordable twin bed which is nice and will last him for years to come which freed up the crib for the baby. It seems silly to spend so much on a crib that will only be used many a few years depending upon how many kids you have.

  • The one we picked out is $200 plus $120 for the mattress. We didn't want anything expensive plus my parents are buying them for us so we didn't want to be greedy.
  • Our first one was 800....second was 500. They are convertible and my H picked them both.
  • One of DH's aunts is getting out of babysitting her grandkids so she is giving us her changing table and crib. We'll just get the mattress if someone doesn't get it from the registry.

  • We spent a whopping $150 for brand new Graco crib, changing table and a mattress.   And it was shipped for free.   DD has never had any issues with it and it was super simple to assemble.

  • Hell to the no I wouldn't spend that! I got a beautiful crib off Craigslist for $80 (talked them down from $150). Which is perfect because I want to sand it and paint it orange!
  • Yeah...her attitude is deplorable.  If you want a $1K crib, that's fine, buy it yourself.  But to cry because someone won't buy it for you...and then cry to your parents so they do?  Man...her child is going to have issues...

I think the one I registered for an Amazon was like $180.  As far as cribs go, as long as they meet the standard safety regulations, the differences are mostly aesthetic/brand so I didn't personally see the point of spending a whole lot, but to each his own.  As long as people can afford it without going into debt, it's none of my business what they spend their money on.
  • If I had those means I might. I am not side-eyeing her for wanting to spend her money a certain way. She does turn my stomach, however, with her sense of entitlement. Nobody owes anybody $#!t in life. A lesson you hope someone learns before they become a parent, but I digress...

  • This girl is a huge brat. If you don't want something offered to you, then politely decline and spend your own money on what you want. It's not that difficult.

That said, some of the ladies on the Bump can be so judgey when it comes to how others spend their money. It's not yours, so why do you give a F? People are free to spend $10 on a crib or $5,000. It affects your life in no way. If I wanted a thousand dollar crib, that would be my business and mine alone, and I would buy it. I only spent about $140 for a Jenny Lind crib, so the crib wasn't my big ticket item, but I don't care how others spend the money they have. We don't all have the same budgets.
I agree with this. I think people are judgey IRL about how others spend their money, you just see it more on TB.

FWIW, I bought two brand-spankin-new cribs for $108/both.

  • Price of the crib aside, those of you getting used cribs - you are not concerned about that they are not up to the new safety standards or could contain led paint? Or that there could potentially be some missing parts (screws, etc.)?

  • If she wants to spend 1k on a crib, I guess that's up to her. I couldn't get myself to shell out 1k for anything in a baby's room because a) he won't be using it for that long and b) it will be pooped on, stickered, scratched, etc etc before too long anyway. After you make sure it's safe and looks like something you want, I don't see what else you need.

This girl rubs me the wrong way because she has two cribs because she just had to give in to her MIL...what?

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Personally, no I wouldn't. But we are big on buying second hand and using hand me downs from friends, etc. If I had an unlimited budget, sure why not.

  • @flerlgirl - Oh she's a complete douchebag, that's for sure!

I purchased our crib second hand (It's a 2012 Graco Stanton crib) and checked it out to make sure it was good safety wise before purchasing, which it is. There's always the risk of missing parts when you buy off Craigslist like we did, but if I need to pick up a couple screws at home depot I have no problem with that (the major parts are all accounted for).

We got our crib, mattress, and a matching changing table for $100, saving us over $400.

We found that some people were selling nice looking cribs on craigslist. We threw out the idea of doing that with a new mattress and sanitizing. But then my future MIL freaked out and thought that was disgusting. So, she offered to help us pay for a new one. I'm grateful, but also concerned because she can be very opinionated. If we are going to split the cost, I'd prefer it to still be in the affordable range ($200-$300). She has high standards so we'll see.

I have no problem with thrift stores/consignment shops/yard sales/Craigslist and most furniture I like more than new store bought items because they are either better made or have more character. There were certain things as a spazzy FTM I wanted to buy new though and that was the cribs and infant seats. Other than that everything else is hand me downs or second hand in some way. But if I new someone I trusted selling/getting rid of a crib that would be different for me.

  • $1k is crazy! I got my crib and a big dresser for $400 at kohls. I had a bunch of reward points, merch credit and a gift card so it came to $300, MIL wants to buy it for us.

  • The crib I chose is about $650.  However, that happens to be the one that I like.  If I found one that I liked that was $1k I would probably think twice about it, but if that's really the one I wanted I would go for it.  Personally, though, we're going to end up spending more money on the dresser and chair since we're going to use those items elsewhere once LO is out of the nursery.

  • I know I'm in the minority but our crib was about $700. We really, really wanted something made in America. I've always tried to buy locally and/or US made items and continue to feel strongly about that in this situation. So we got ours from Young America on sale from a local baby store. If the made in America thing hadn't been an issue for me, then heck yes I would have gotten something at target or ikea.

For what it's worth, that is the only piece of furniture we are buying... everything else we are repurposing from something we already have, and the rocker is a hand me down.

  • We picked out a convertible crib at Babies R Us and its on our registry.

Its first a crib, then a toddler bed with side rail, then toddler bed with no sides, then twin bed and then can be a full size. I think the price is $600! I think for all those beds its a fantastic deal!!

I personally don't care how much anyone spends but she is way entitled.  I would not pay $1k for that crib!  I have seen some for that amount though that I thought were beautiful.

@njbabymama - I'm assuming you went to the one in Totowa?  Did they have a good furniture selection?  They don't seem to have much on their website and I was wondering if its worth a trip to look at cribs.  Which one did you get?  Thanks!

  • I was given a beautiful Oeuf crib by my son's (rich) godparents when he was born.  We had to put it in storage when we unexpectedly moved across the country to California. Since we thought we'd only be here 6 months, I bought an Ikea crib to use out here, rather than pay to have the crib shipped.  I have to say, I wish they'd saved their money and just bought me an Ikea crib from the start--it is just as nice looking, just as safe, and cost $600 less!  I'm not even going to bother shipping my "nice" crib out for baby #2, the Ikea one works great.  I love it.  Now, to figure out a way to sell the other one...

  • @KrystaJ - we just ordered the Jenny Lind on Amazon for $179 with free shipping! My friend has it (8 month old baby) and loves it.
  • Haha, yes... baby WILL shit in the bed. And likely eventually repaint said crib with shit when you think they're napping.

Best comment in the thread right there!!

  • You can tell she is a 'stomp my little feet and get what I want when I want it' kind of girl. And her parents are still enabling that behavior.

I would be thrilled for somebody offering to spend just a couple hundred for a crib. I'd feel guilty if they spent 1,000 for 1 piece of furniture. I guess that's the difference when you're raised to appreciate what you have and actually have to work for things.
  • My mom was mortified that I wouldn't buy a "real" crib from a furniture store for DD #1. I bought a $200 crib from Walmart.

My thoughts..its gotten banged around and bitten in the 14 months she's used it so far. I knew once it was time to convert to a bed, we'd probably use it through that transition but once it was time for a big girl room for her, I'd want new furniture. So, this was not a dept I wanted to spend alot of money in.

Maybe if I knew I was one and done, I'd invest more..I feel like people who drop the $ just justify with the fact that they'll use the set for years. I knew I probably wouldn't.

  • Ours was between 500 or 600 but that included the dresser! I would never spend 1000 on a crib!
