Breakfast

I am having a hard time finding breakfast foods that are healthy enough to be a good start to my day, something I want to eat, and foods that are quick. What are your go-to breakfast foods? I have a 40 minute commute in the mornings so something quick or something I can take with me are preferred. Ideas?

I try to get protein first thing. I mix plain Fage 2% Greek yogurt with a couple of squirts of sf raspberry Torani syrup, some blueberries, and throw some granola on top. This is about 30g of protein. If I'm really in a pinch, I will just grab a Premier Protein shake out of the fridge and drink that with a carb, like Triscuits or something. (The shake is also 30g of protein, and tastes like chocolate milk!)

ETA: GNC sells Quest protein bars that are fairly natural. The chocolate chip cookie dough is to die for and they all have 15-20g of fiber, too. Bonus!

  • Smoothies! They take a couple minutes to make, but are easy to eat on the go:)

  • @liberty95 Yum! I am going to try that!

  • I've been making smoothies the night before so i don't have to make them in the morning, I make one with Greek yogurt bananas and peanut butter it's my favorite, and it's filling and quick.
  • Oat bran, overnight oats (you prep the night before and they are ready for you in the am), a protein bar and fruit, or plain 2% Greek yogurt with fruit and cinnamon.

  • This is a tasty smoothie. I just use regular protein powder and whole milk.
It's not overly nutritious by any means, but dang, it sure tastes good!

  • Thank you all! These are getting my brain going about what I can do.

  • I'm in the same boat as you with the commute. For the days that my usual yogurt and fruit won't cut it, quinoa flakes cook really fast (about 5 minutes) and you can throw all kinds of fruits and other toppings in there. It tastes just like oatmeal.

  • Cottage cheese and peaches. Every single morning.
  • @lellymine I do cottage cheese and pineapple - will try peaches, too. Sounds yummy!

  • I've been doing vanilla Greek yogurt and mixing Justin's honey almond butter sometimes adding a banana or apple slices to the mix

Toasted multigrain bread is another fav with either nut butter or butter spread

  • Slice of protein bread toasted with PB or Naked brand Protein Smoothie. This is my usual with coffee unless we are cooking eggs etc as a family.
  • @TonyaCody06 Are the Naked protein smoothies chalky? I tried another brand and couldn't get it down. Started with a B, can't remember now!

  • Oh yeah, @mrsgerman! Hard boiled eggs and string cheese!

  • The protein one (blueberry/strawberry) does have some thickness/grit to it b/c of the fiber/protein powder but I love it! I haven't tried the other flavors. I drink 1/2 at a time.
  • Whole grain Wasa crackers with peanut butter.  I got hooked on it during first tri when it was all that would stay down.  I fell in love with the convenience.

  • I eat PB banana toast at home and take a protein smoothie with me for my long-ass commute.

Smoothie: greek yogurt, milk, mixed berries, protein mix, agave

  • Like @Lynnja616, overnight (refrigerator) oatmeal is easy to make and yummy! Here's a link to recipes for it (sorry, on mobile) https://www.theyummylife.com/Refrigerator_Oatmeal

If I didn't make any of those, I grab Greek yogurt, a fruit (banana or orange), and a bagel with pb.

  • Neither super healthy nor fast, but I usually eat oatmeal, a grapefruit, some kind of meat (often fish sticks), and toast or a scone. I just feel better during the day if I start with a large breakfast.

  • You can hard boil eggs the night before, spread cream cheese on a bagel, protein shakes or make mixed fruit on your day off and take it with you every morning. I used to eat these when I used to eat healthy.. Now, not so much.

I am so trying that maple blueberry!
  • Cereal with a banana everyday during the week, and scrambled eggs on the weekends. I could eat breakfast food for every meal!

Like a lot of the ladies, I too do Fage 2% Greek yogurt. I like mine with either granola, berries, and a drop of stevia for sweetness, OR in the blender with organic frozen strawberries, a splash of apple juice and an ice cube. If I'm really in a pinch, I keep the peach Fage 2% yogurts on hand to grab and go. On my super rushed days, I keep instant oatmeal packets at work to heat up right when I get there! Hope this helps!

  • This just occurred to me... I used to always make South Beach Oatmeal Pancakes! I think I'm going to try prepping these tonight...

Has anyone tried them? They're amazing and protein packed! I think I'll make some for the week and pack them in little containers for a quick grab and go...

Here's a link to the recipe:

*I skip the nutmeg (personal preference), sub the nonstick spray for real butter, and I use real maple syrup* Very tasty.
  • If you like waffles, Kashi blueberry or 7 grain have been my staple lately; with low fat yogurt or cream cheese. Sometimes I make it a sandwich if I'm running late to work. Delicious.
  • This is a great thread! Although I *know that breakfast is the "most important meal of the day", I usually skip it due to lack of time in the am. Being pregnant, I at least try to grab a bagel or granola bar and usually make eggs on the weekend. I LOVE the idea of making smoothies and freezing them in ziplock bags. I feel like I could totally do that and it wouldn't take time away from the morning routine during the week. It's not easy to get myself, and a 2 yr old ready and out the door by 6 am, plus take care of the dog and her needs (dh is already at work). I can't even imagine throwing an infant into that mix!

Oh man.  You ladies make me feel terrible about my health choices!  I've had Captain Crunch for the last couple of days in a row.

Usually I have some vanilla greek yogurt and PB toast, but man do I love me some crunch berries!
You're not alone. Captain Crunch with Crunchberries! I drink the milk after, does that count for something?

  • English muffin w a laughing cow wedge and a morningstar sausage patty! I also like to make a huge batch if turkey sausage- I freeze them in baggies and pull out 10 links or so at a time. Then I just microwave two for breakfast w my english muffin or oatmeal- yum!

Lol, today I had Cap'n Crunch, so no help here. It was damn good though.

Almost brought this today, but I opted for yogurt and an enourmous orange.

Typically I would make a whey protien smoothie, with strawberries, banana, and almond milk. Its filling but I still have to bring a snack to eat before I go to lunch.

  • I used to make a breakfast sandwich and eat it on the road. i would always switch up what protein was on there. Today we had a breakfast sandwich with Taylor roll. Mmmn, salty goodness!

  • Like @joules235 I need a sufficient amount of protein to get me through the morning so I make eggs just about every day. On weekends I make breakfast sandwiches for DH and I with eggs, cheese, and bacon or some other meat on toast or a bagel.

  • Peanut butter and banana on toast is my staple.  When I am substitute teaching, it's ridiculously quick, super filling, and I can eat it in the car or at my desk and it all sticks together so nothing is going everywhere all over the place :)

LOL! Growing up my mom never let us eat "sugar cereals". As an adult I was never interested in trying them, and now I would just feel plain guilty for eating them! (Though one time she did go crazy and got us Raisin Bran!)

Girl, you need to get over that and go buy yourself some peanut butter crunch right now!
