Pregnant after 35

GI upset

So tonight after going out to dinner with DH I had extremely bad stomach pain. I finally vomitted and feel slightly better.I am not sure if I just ate to much of if something set me off. I had really bad stomach cramps, which of course made me nervous. I am planning on calling my dr. to check in but was wondering if anyone dealt with any gastrointestinal bugs or stomach upsets while pregnant. What was your dr.s advice?

Re: GI upset

  • I had a lovely GI thing (stomach first, then other side too, around 12-15 hours ...) around 14 or 15 weeks.  I was away from home and so did not call my Dr/midwife but ... that was 10 weeks ago and LO has seemed to be doing fine since then on all tests.  In fact, she just kicked to say yes she is OK. :)

I of course freaked out that it might be Listeria or one of those other things responsible from our food restrictions but it turned out to be a case where Dr. Google was reassuring rather than scary as it seemed like all the most concerning ones would come with a fever and I didn't have one.  Also I searched posts here on the bump and saw lots of reports of others who had had stomach bugs and they and LO were fine so that helped.

Like you,  I had eaten out - though much riskier (as dh has loved to remind me ever since...) -  stuff off the hot foods buffet at Whole Foods and also a bit of a smoothie (they were doing vitamix demos) so it was probably just something in one of those or the odd combo that didn't agree with me.  Or something eaten the previous day while traveling (airport food ...).  Sounds similar to what you got (likely having something to do with eating out - either germs or just system not liking eating different foods or too much).

Calling your doc. to check is always a good idea, especially if you are home.  I hope that he/she will offer you some reassurance and that you'll be back to feeling 100% very soon!

  • I traveled to Mexico a couple of weeks ago and ended up with traveler's diarrhea. Lovely. Everything I read (and my acupuncturist and doctor confirmed when I returned home) said to stay hydrated, because dehydration was the biggest concern. With diarrhea, that also means you need to replenish your sodium and potassium.

Well, I barfed a lot in this pregnancy and haven't always been sure what caused it. But as long as it doesn't go longer than 24 hours, and you stay hydrated, you probably don't need to worry. I still get some stomach pain attacks now at 33 weeks, and I think sometimes it's just that what I ate isn't agreeing with me. Anything greasy definitely sets it off. Hope you feel better soon! Also, lying on your left side is supposed to help when you feel nauseous or have stomach pain.
thanks for that tip. I will try it.

  • Sounds normal to have uterine crampiness after upset stomach/bowels... sorry... stay hydrated as that will also cause crampiness/bh
  • Thanks again ladies. Slowly feeling better.
