Big-Busted Mamas - Which Carrier Works?

DH and I are going carrier shopping this week, and I was hoping some generously endowed ladies can help steer me in the right direction. DH and I are roughly the same height; he's broad shouldered and small waisted. I'm (usually) an hourglass with huge boobs, 38FF pre-baby, and wear a size 16-18 ish. I've been avoiding trying on carriers up 'til now because I have it in my head that none will comfortably fit the very large difference between my normal waist and bust circumference (it was about a ten inch difference before I got pregnant). That, and every mom I ever see in a baby carrier when I'm out and about is petite with less than D-cups. Are they just not made for us bigger girls? Any advice from moms who have been there is gratefully welcomed!

  • I love the Sakura Bloom ring slings. There are lots of color options and ring slings are adjustable so that will let you and your man wear the baby comfortably and adjust to your own body easily. I am petite but am a DD. The slings go from newborn to 35 pounds- it's the only one I have used consistently since my son was born and now he is two and I still wear him in it. :)

  • I bought a Beco Butterfly II with my last baby and I could not get a good fit with it. It made me really sad because I loved that carrier. I bought an Ergo this time but I have not tried it out yet. A friend of mine has the Boba 3G and she loves it. I am going to get that one if the Ergo doesn't work out for me. I love the Ergo because you can pretty easily nurse with it....at least that is what I have been told.

  • Ok, I'm anti the ring sling…just couldn't really get it to work well and feel comfortable (tried a couple).  I did love the Moby early on - that was just fine and felt great.  For when my son started to get older, I purchased an infantino carrier (for front or back) - it's similar to the Ergo ones.  And that was perfect.  As he got bigger, it was def easier on my body to carry him on my back - and even now at 2.5 years - putting him on my back is fine.

I am splurging this go around and getting a Boba carrier - it's one that I wanted with my son - but just couldn't afford at the moment.

Try them out i the stores too if you want - that should be no problem!

  • I am smaller, but was a DD after I had DS1. I personally found that SSC's weren't as comfortable with a newborn and much preferred using a wrap like a Moby or Sling at first. If you went this route, then you could wait until the baby is here to decide on a carrier that works best for you and baby. Abby's Lane carries Boba's (which is what I have and LOVE) and they have a 30-day free trial on them in case it doesn't work for you.
  • I am usually a 40DDD, now a 40F, and hoping not to get much bigger! I've heard and read nothing but great things about Boba for "plus sizes," as well as for talls (I'm 5'9" and husband is 6'4"). I had my eye on the 3G, but the 4G is now available, so I'm going with that. The 4G has a much easier-to-use infant insert, which seems to be the main difference. If you're not going to use it right away and don't care about that, you can get the 3G for $20 less.

  • We're body twins! Except pre pregnancy I was a 38DD. I'm a FTM so I haven't carried a baby in it yet but I purchased a Happy Baby Wrap. I like that I can tie it myself in multiple positions and the newborn carry position has the wrap in an X across the back which feels like it will distribute the weight well.
  • If you are up for the learning curve, woven wraps are going to be the most versatile and have the biggest size range. Ring slings are pretty good too since you can get them in different sizes to fit your upper body. Maybe look into a Mei Tai since they tie on but you get the structured body like a soft structured carrier. BabyHawk brand made XL straps.

I have large boobs but a small frame, and those have been my favorite so far.

  • im a 40e size16-18. I have a maitai, a soft body one I found for $40 with a french name that is great, and a moby wrap. It has to have a waist tie or it is too much pressure on upper back.
  • We love both the Moby and the Becco Gemini and my BFing boobs are in the F-H range!

  • Thanks for all the advice ladies, it really helps! I have struggled with back pain all my life, and this baby has given me some really bad (sometimes crippling) sciatica since month one, so getting a good carrier that won't make my back feel worse is super important to me. I'm exited to look into these options. Thanks!

  • We have a baby store in town that carries Ergo, Gemini and Boba so you can try them on there. We also have a few baby consignment stores that I frequent to see if they happen to have one available to try on with baby. Once you decide what you want, there is also a baby carrier b/s/t page on FB where you can get gently used ones for a great price. LOTS of wrap options available too.
  • I'm about the same size, and the ergo is good. The shoulder strapset out a ton so there is plenty of room, and if the belt is too short, you can buy an extender.
