Thrush on nipples?

I have 6 month old son he's just getting over having pneumonia, rsv, dbl ear infection. So he has been on steroid breathing treatments and and antibiotic. Finally he's doing better but now my nipples feel like razors or glass when he nurses, could this be thrush? Not sure if him being sick has anything to do with it but would I go to my ob or family dr? Thank you in advance!

Re: Thrush on nipples?

  • I called my OB yesterday for the same reason. The nurse told me to call the LC first. My OB has a breast care center in the same building. The LC gave me tips. You may want to try that first.

  • Call the OB and tell them you think it's thrush.  Get a prescription for oral diflucan and all purpose nipple ointment.  Mine didn't even make me come to the office - just wrote the script from our phone call and I went to get it.

Even if your child doesn't have thrush that you can see, they should be treated as well.  Most pedi's give out nystatin.  It worked for us, but I know that it doesn't have a great track record with everyone.  Yeast is just a hard thing to get rid of in general.
