Gas Drops / Gripe Water

Lately we have noticed that right after nursing LO is very fussy, crying, kicking his legs, squirming, etc....seems like he is very uncomfortable from gas. I burp him the best I can, but wanted to try the gas drops that many of you have mentioned. Question is, are gas drops the same as gripe water? Any specific brand? I am not sure what exactly to look for when I go to the store.

Just a side note that our Pedi suggested I cut out dairy as that may be causing his fussiness. I stopped dairy a couple days ago, but know it can take a while to work out of my system so I want to do what I can in the meantime. FX that its not a dairy sensitivity because this girl loves her milk and cheese!!

The gas drops didn't work for us. I never did get the gripe water though so maybe that would have. I think they're different, but can't remember the difference for sure. I think the gas drops help with gas and gripe water helps with other tummy troubles? I'm sure someone else will know though.

Gas drops and gripe water are different, gas drops usually have simethicone which helps "dissolve" the gas bubbles. We used it on dd1, just put the recommended dose in her bm bottles, seemed to help, along with feeding almost upright and bicycling legs, tummy time, etc

I cut out dairy and green veggies. I also give LO a cocktail of gripe water and the drops. Which seems to do the trick.

We do has drops (Ovol brand) after his late afternoon feed and they work wonders for us! Depending on his level of gassiness, we may give another dose before he goes to bed...they can have up to 1.25ml in 24hrs and he has about half that. We tried gripe water and he just spat it out, gas drops smell sort of minty and he lovesssss them! GL!

Sorry to thread jack, but don't want to start another similar one...

Gas drops have not been very effective for us. Gripe water seems to have helped some tummy pain, but I'm worried she might be having an allergic reaction to it. She seems to have a rash or the start of baby acne, I'm not sure and don't want to risk it. I'm sensative to ginger so I'm thinking she might be too. Wondering if there are any products or remedies similar to gripe water that anyone might know?

We use little remedies gas drops when she is fussing bc of gas and her tummy is full and hard. It works for us within a couple of minutes typically. I didn't want to try gripe water bc of the warning about allergic reaction.

Thank you for all the responses! It sounds like maybe the gas drops are a better fit for us right now...? He doesn't have any issues with reflux, and pretty much never spits up. I don't think he is colicky, he just seems uncomfortable after feedings (maybe for an hour or so).

Can anyone elaborate on the comments about allergic reactions to gripe water? Is that common?

Allergic reactions to gripe water are not common, sounds like the start to baby acne. I love Mommys bliss gripe water it has ginger and fennel. Stops his hiccups and helps with his upset tummy from gas bubbles.

I bought both, and we like the gas drops okay. He calms down instantly because they're sweet and he's into that, but I'm not totally convinced they actually do anything and my pediatrician kind of eye-rolled them when I asked about using them and said "Whelp, I mean, they won't do any harm".

But omg, the Mommy's Bliss gripe water caused the biggest scare I've had with my baby since we had him. Eff that stupid dropper and the directions on the side of the box! Arlo was having a conniption fit so I filled the dropper with 2.5 ml as instructed and squirted it into his mouth all at once and he choked REALLY badly. He didn't breath for 10+ seconds and then his face turned a weird color and he started coughing and gasping. No joke, I thought I killed him. Be careful with that shit! I looked up reviews to find that this is a sort of common thing.

I bought some gas drops tonight, so we will see if that helps!

I use the little remedies gas drops when she's fussy and trying to get gas out. That seems to help pretty good, we also do bicycles and tummy massage. We didn't have much luck with gripe water, but I'm gonna give it a whirl for hiccups like pp said.

@Cashingn2: Ya, I feel really dumb in retrospect, and I'd totally find an alternative method of delivery if I used gripe water again. But I also feel like the box needs to give more explicit instructions to keep people from doing what I did.

J choked too, but i think it was too much because she hadn 't really swallowed it all.
You may already be doing this but I angle the dropper towards the inside of her cheek and do a little at a time. She doesn 't mind it. I think it's the mommy's bliss... Blue and green bottle? Ginger and fennel.
She had an all-out scream-fest tonight and calmed a bit after having it.
Well, that or pure exhaustion. Rough day.

Gas drops can be used at every feeding and gripe water is more of a "as needed" type of thing. Gas drops really work especially when given several times a day. Gripe water helps LO poop (in my experience) . So one is for gas and the other is for digestion.

LO has MSPI so I have to follow a strict no dairy or soy diet. It's only been a week but I'm curious if anyone else that has LOs with milk/soy protien intolerance used gas drops until the proteins worked its way out of their system... If so, did it help?

I've been dairy free for two weeks today and poops are now getting back to normal breastfeeding poops. Yay! Gripe water cured hiccups immediately everytime, but that's all and I use little remedies gas drops and never really noticed a consistent difference.

I've been off soy/dairy for a week now. Grunting and gas is getting a tiny bit better but the gas drops help SO much. There have been a few times where LO was arching in pain and kicking and crying from the gas - gave him drops and he settled down quickly and was able to pass the gas. I'm a HUGE fan of the drops.

Saw the ped today and he explained why gas drops aren't always helpful... They breakdown gas bubbles but don't necessarily get them out. So if they have one big gas bubble, all it does is break it down to a bunch of little gas bubbles, not helping to expel them.
