Natural Birth

Breech Baby

We discovered at my appointment yesterday that, as I had suspected, baby flipped breech about a week ago. I'm 35.5wks so there's still lots of time for LO to flip but I'd like some stories of things that worked. I've been looking at spinning babies and trying to do their various tips too.

Also like to hear from anyone who's had an external version and their experience. The Drs are very willing to try that around 37-38wks if she hasn't flipped on her own at that point. But if LO is still breech at 39wks I'll be going in for a scheduled csection as no one in the practice has experience with vaginal breech delivery, and I wouldn't be comfortable without an experienced provider. At this point I'm not sure it's possible to switch and LO may flip back since she had been vertex up until recently.

My first birth was a very uneventful, relatively quick vaginal birth with no meds/interventions outside of IV/antibiotics for GBS and monitoring.  I was basically assuming this one would be the same (silly I know since life is never THAT straightforward lol). While I know things can go wrong during birth, and emergency csection has always been a back of the mind worst case scenario option, the thought of a scheduled csection never crossed my mind so I'm feeling a bit nervous and unhappy about the very real prospect of surgery.

Re: Breech Baby

  • Well, when pregnant with A. she flipped to breech briefly late in the game. I asked my MW what the ramifications of that are .(Disclaimer: We plan HB.) Her response was "we treat that like a normal variation in the birthing process. You have the baby."

Now, that may not be a response you are comfortable with. But when my MW said it, the butterflies in my stomach stopped churning. I would totally be comfortable with having a breech birth with my MW.

My mom had  breech birth. They discovered it when she went in in labor. They scheduled her for a c/s the next morning. She kept saying "I am in labor. I am having this baby."

No one would believe her. My dad went home to care for my oldest sister. My mom kept insisting that the next morning would be too late. A nurse finally listened and checked her. And my mom pushed my sister out.

Keep doing spinning babies stuff. I hope LO flips for you.

This is exactly what I was deal with (there's a post somewhere down there titled vaginal breech).

At my 36w appt we discovered she was breech. The MW tried an "in office" ECV. She tried for maybe 20 minutes and I was just really sore and she didn't move at all. Between 36-37w I say a.chiropractor 3 times and had Webster Technique and also did inversions 3x a day.   At 37w we tried another "in office" ECV and she moved some, but not even close to vertex. The midwife called L&D and scheduled a "formal" ECV with the MW and an OB with monitoring for Ctx and the potential for an epidural if needed (which I can't imagine, the ECV really didn't hurt as much as it was really uncomfortable) and the potential for relaxers to help avoid ctx.

Needless to say, the MW tried again when she came back from scheduling me and that time worked.

My first birth was brief and really uneventful which made me a great candidate for a vaginal breech had I gone into labor before 39w. If not I would have been scheduled for a c/s at 39w.

Are there other offices in your area that are familiar and experienced with vaginal breech? Is it something you'd want to even try?

My little one was breech until 37 weeks. I started spinningbabies around 32ish weeks daily, and that alone didn't flip him. I had an external version at 37 weeks, and it was unsuccessful. The baby wouldn't move an inch. (It was painful, just so you can prepare yourself. I was told by one person it wouldn't hurt at all and by MD that it could be uncomfortable. I always like to know what to expect.). I went to the chiropractor at 37.5 weeks for Webster technique and he flipped!

    Good luck!

ETA: I didn't read PP's ECV experience until right now. I'm glad to hear that it's not painful for everyone!

  • I personally wouldn't be opposed to a vaginal delivery, however, the OB practice I see doesn't have anyone with experience/skill so in that case I'd actually not feel comfortable with it. IMO being the test run for a provider isn't a good way to deliver regardless of how baby is presenting.

Briefly discussed doing an ECV and the Dr said they typically do it with an epi for a. my comfort, and b. in event an emergency csection is needed they can get baby that much faster if I am one of those rare people who have serious complication like placental abruption.

LO had hiccups this evening, and is definitely still breech but I've been doing inversions on spinning babies daily since my appointment. Obviously LO still has time to flip, so I'm trying to stay positive. If she hasn't by FRiday (my next appt) we will have to decide whether to schedule a version so your experiences are definitely helpful! But at this point I'm leaning towards going for it since it appears to be very low risk and I'd really like to try all my options before surgery.  If it doesn't work and I'm stuck getting the csection at least I won't have to wonder what if.

Unfortunately I don't know offhand any providers that happen to deliver vaginal breech but I'll be looking into it next week. Although I'm not sure if that's even possible to find someone that has experience, will switch me this late and takes my insurance lol. But hey, it's worth looking JIC.
