If you are taking or were taking metformin...

If you are taking or were taking metformin, did your doctor take you off it at some point in your pregnancy or are you still taking it?

I have PCOS with insulin resistance, metformin is how I have been able to conceive both times. My OB kept me on it my entire first pregnancy, she told me it would reduce the risk of gestational diabetes. So I have stayed on it this pregnancy too.

I am switching to a new OB because we recently moved, and my best friend (who also has PCOS) goes to her. She took my best friend off the metformin at 12 weeks, saying the placenta took over that function then. I have my first appointment with the new OB on Monday. I have read different things, but I would prefer to stay on it because I am already 24 weeks, and I that's what I am used to with my first pregnancy. I was just curious how many people are still on it, and if your doctor took you off the metformin, if they gave you any reasons.. Thanks!

  • I was also on it both times we were ttc. The first time it was when I had just been diagnosed with PCOS and we conceived on our own after 3 months. This time I was on it, Clomid and injectibles. Both times after we got our bfp my OBs took me off right away. I haven't heard any correlation between metformin and GD, but I already did one early glucose test at 16 weeks and passed w/o being on metformin, and I never got GD with my first.

  • I was on it with my last LO and this one and both times taken off at 13 weeks when placenta took over. Just took a fasting blood last week and passed with a 92! And my A1C1 is 5.6 so my endo isn't concerned about GD but I have to go back in April for f/u

  • FTM, and I used metformin to conceive as well. Was just told to taper down to 500mg this week, then completely off next week.

  • Hmm.. I will have to talk to the doctor about it some more on Monday. It's interesting that everyone else has stopped taking it, or will be shortly. Thanks for your answers! :)

  • I was put on it only for TTC, so I went off it at 12 weeks. If its a med that's good for you in general though- there's no reason to come off it.

  • I took it in order to TTC and my doctor took me off at 12 weeks as well.
  • I have been on it for years for PCOS. My dr told me to stay on for my pregnancy w my 2 yo. My new dr told me to stay on it for this pregnancy as well. I was told to stop taking it after delivery because I was breastfeeding.

  • I have taken it for years for PCOS. My doc told me to stop taking it after I got a positive pregnancy test. I tested early for GD and so far so good, but I will be tested again in a couple weeks.
  • I took it TTC too. For my son, the dr took me off at 12 weeks. This time (different dr) they had me come off at 16 weeks. I passed the glucose test with my son and am hoping I pass this time too!! Good luck!
