Surgery when pregnant?

Has anyone had surgery during a pregnancy? My doctor thinks I may have to have my thyroid removed before June and I'm freaking out. How far along were you during your surgery and how did they monitor the baby?

Re: Surgery when pregnant?

  • Doctors thought they were going to have to do appendectomy on my back in Dec. I had inflammation around my appendix. They were very put off about doing it because it was my abdomen. Being put under while pregnant does have its risks. But I am sure that your doc and team will take all precautions. IF you don't feel comfortable ALWAYS seek a 2nd opinion. No one will fault you for that when you are looking out for the well being of your baby.

The inflammation around my appendix just disappeared (no one has an explanation) so I dodged the operation. Thank Goodness.

  • Major abdominal surgery at 34w with DD for twisted intestines. OB was in the OR monitoring her ready to deliver if needed. Recovery was horrible but I had a major incision down my abdomen that needed to heal with a growing baby behind it.

Baby is affected by general anasthesia so make sure you consult your OB about possible effects and get the okay from them. Recovery shouldn't be that hard, but I've never had my thyroid removed.

  • My girlfriend had her thyroid removed during her second trimester. They thought she had cancer so it absolutely could not wait. They know when it is safe to perform versus not. Her and her baby are perfect! Surgery was a success and recovery was manageable, she said. :)

  • I work as a nurse in a operating room. Surgery in a pregnant woman is not common but also not unheard of. Depending on the surgery an ultrasound tech is in the room monitoring the baby with ultrasound before the case and after. They will also put a monitor on the patient to keep track of the heartbeat. Our surgeons also make sure an OB is on standby. This goes for patients in first, second and third trimester. Of course there are risk and your surgeon and OB should both speak with you and each other regarding the surgery.
  • I work as a nurse on the surgical (recovery) floor of a hospital and have seen several patients who had surgery through all three trimesters. While I don't know all the specifics of what is done during the actual surgery, that needs to be discussed with your surgeon and OB, I know after more than likely an ultrasound will be preformed. There are plenty of medications for pain that are safe to use while pregnant for the recovery. And while I've never had a patient undergo thyroid removal while pregnant, I'd imagine it woundn't complicate your recovery at all. Every lady I have ever taken care of has gone on to have beautiful healthy babies.

Hopefully this helps ease some of your worries.
  • Thanks everyone. You have definitely helped ease my worries. I'm waiting to hear from the doctor on when they want me to have the surgery.

I'm glad her surgery was successful! Do you know how many weeks she was when she had it removed?
