Not enough sleep for baby

Apologies if this has come up in the previous sleep threads (we've had one or two) And apologies for the long winded question!

Until recently I have been blessed and thankful for a baby who will STTN, that said, he would not really sleep during the day. Fine, as he was getting an adequate amount of sleep for his age and it wasn't messing with his demeanor.

Since traveling over Christmas and his subsequent virus post Chirstmas he is just not sleeping enough and has been a cranky butt because of it. He is a real treat (insert sarcasm) to get to sleep at night. He is up multiple times at night and he is refusing napping during the day. UNLESS I drive him (a bad habit developed while traveling, I'm trying to put the kabosh on it but by 3p and no nap, I have been giving in)

My question is... how do you ladies do naps? I'm sorry if that sounds broad and nieve. Everytime I've tried just putting him in the crib he plays and scoots around and eventually cries. But ends up more awake. I sometimes can dance him to sleep (in my arms or a wrap) but the second I put him down... Bing! Wide awake.

Tia. Any thoughts or links to previous discussion is appreciated :)

Sorry this was a bit of a rant too!

Re: Not enough sleep for baby

  • my lo naps in my bed. I usually lay down with him and then leave once he is asleep. He will nap for almost 2 hours like this. If I put him in his crib I only get 30 min and a fussy baby.

  • Thank you @tttwalters its definitely worth a try! That's how he will go to bed sometimes (when he is being a bear) and then be transferred into the crib.
  • @cricket81 and @kari5186 Thank you both. We also nurse to sleep. Unfortunately it's been more like ... Nurse to half asleep. Wake once removed from nursing position :( He's fighting me tooth and nail!

@34blondie I'm working on consistency :) Traveling and sickness really bucked the trend for us. Thank you so much for sharing! Happy it's working for you :) Much appreciated!
  • @steamboat1679 we are now in that window! Dozing while nursing as I type. Fingers crossed. Thank you for sharing!
  • We put down awake after doing sleep training a month or so ago.  She takes her first nap about 2 hours after she wakes up.  Her second nap is about 2.5 hours after she wakes up from her first, and her third nap is about 2.5 hours after she wakes up from her second.  Her first and second naps are typically a little over an hour, although we often get only 45 minutes and sometimes the occasional 2 hour nap.  Her third nap is often a cat nap to tide her over in the evening, and we try to make sure she is awake by 5:30 to make sure she'll go to sleep at bedtime. We aim for about 3 hours of napping a day (although clearly she does what she wants!).  She naps in her crib for all naps except the third, which is sometimes in the car or on the boob.

I'm really no help - I still nurse to sleep for naps and night time.

  • Babies this age should be getting around 14 hours a sleep everyday, give or take an hour.

2 hours after she wakes up is her first nap, and then about 4 hours after that for her 2nd, and then goes to bed for the night from 9:30-8.

  • Thank all you ladies for sharing :)@beary+ghastly ive seen/read similar. that's what we are working towards... He's just fighting it! Silly boy does not want to sleep despite my best efforts to help him. Today has gone better than most in terms of napping. Hopefully it will translate to a smoother evening. Fx!

C had the same issues last month, and every so often we're still working on it. It's 10:30 and she still isn't asleep. But yes, 2 hours after waking up is the sweet spot for her first nap.

I put my babies down 90-120 minutes after they wake up. They nap for between 1-3 hours. Then I do the same for their second nap which is usually 1-2 hours.

I put them down drowsy in their cribs and turn on a little music thing that plays for a few minutes.

I agree the time window makes all the difference. If I miss the window they nap horribly or won't go down at all.
