OMG @TJ1979 would never eat a banana, chilled or otherwise.

I guess part 2 of my UO is that fruit must always be cut up. Bc biting into cold fruit is yucky on your teeth.

We can't afford preschool around here. It's like sending your kid to private school. Eff that. All the cheap preschool are low income only. So we are trying to teach her what she needs at home.

Biting into cold fruit hurts my teeth even when cut. When DH cuts melons or pineapple he leaves some out for me to eat and sticks the rest in the fridge. My UO is that if my food splattered microwave and microwave food cover thing bothers you so much then you should clean it. Yes, it irritates me too. I actually really hate it. But with the 99 bazillion other things I have to do it really doesn't even rank. Forcing me to clean the cover by putting it in my sink just makes me not like you.
This gives me an UO to share... Things that do not fit in the dishwasher should not be used unless you are going to clean it yourself. This includes all pizza pans and colanders. Also, spoons should always be used to remove hamburger grease versus a colanders.
How do you use a spoon? :\">        I hate cleaning hamburger grease off the colander but don't know another way.

Use a slotted spoon and tilt the pan to the side/up so the spoon holds the meat, but the grease runs through the slots and slides to the lowered end of the pan.

  • My UO is that I really want to move to the country before my kids start kindergarten so that they're in a small school. DH and I both attended very small public schools, small enough that they might as well have been private schools. Everyone knew everyone, and it was immediately obvious if something bad was going on. Right now we live in an area with a great school system, but it is very large and has had a lot of gang violence and drug issues pop up in the last 8 years or so. DH has been told that we will be moving or doing private or home school before DS hits middle school. I know I can't keep my kids in a bubble, but I'm sure we could find a nice rock to live under until they're grown, right? :D

Same here. One year of preschool in my city costs more than my entire masters degree. Not a good value for the money, IMO. MIL taught private kindergarten forever, so DD will be spending lots of time with her the next couple of years. : )

I was the same way, and am so not a girly girl, but I don't think I'll mind at all if my daughter is one- she can like whatever she wants! :)........

....and that leads me to my UO. I hope she hates cheer-leading as much as I do. It's not that I hate the girls, or have some jealousy thing. I just think women can be athletes in other ways that don't involve jumping around on the sidelines and hollering a figurative "yay, boys!" in a clique that reeks of desperation and unapologetic sexism.

I like our new cheaper daycare. They're bi-lingual, we haven't had a leak with our cloth diapers, they dispose of the poop in her diapers, they let me know what she eats and how much, they are awesome about drop off and distracting our daughter right away, and I'm pretty sure she knows right and left now.

And I agree, as long as you're working on the skills necessary for school, it shouldn't be required to send a child to preschool.

I just can't. I should try it...but I can barely leave the grease sitting on my counter long enough for it to harden so I can throw it away.

I think it's because my mom always used to keep it in coffee mugs and I would have vivid daydream/nightmares about accidentally drinking it.
My parents kept it in coffee tins, which was fine until you had to open the container to pour more in  :-&

I also use a pan top. We do reuse bacon grease to cook in, and it is delicious.

I definitely agree about traditional preschool - most of them are just like day care with higher prices. You can definitely do just as well or better at home.

  • I wanna know why the heck does preschool need to cost 700-2k per month around here. It's insane. We have 2 co-ops that have the wait list from hell, and all the other affordable options are low income. It sucks so badly. If we could afford it Rosie would be going to full day Montessori preschool and Kindergarten.

  • Wait. Bacon grease, yes. But not beef grease right?! Ew. Is this normal 3 day a week preschool that is so pricey? Or full time like daycare?
For us it depends on the center. The only 3 day per week type ones around here are the low income ones and the co-ops. The regular ones are 5 full days or 5 half days depending on the center/program. The one we fell in love with was 5 full days. We would provide lunch and snack as well. For a whopping 1200$ per month. We couldn't do that.

I don't doubt at all the work and athleticism involved in cheer leading. DH did know a male coach/teacher that disliked cheer leading because all the best athletes would be cheerleaders. And not in other sports.

I don't like it because of the male eye candy aspect of it, especially at the pro level. And a part of me doesn't understand why they wouldn't just do gymnastics.

But of course, I don't understand why it seems every boy does football, and every girl does cheer leading around here. I don't want DS doing football.

Oh gosh, I totally appreciate that cheer leading is very athletic- I would never argue that it's not. And I understand that most schools offer cheer leading, but do not necessarily have a gymnastics team. I think cheer competitions and tumbling are great. I just hate that the most common platform for cheerleaders to perform is on the sidelines next to the boys, who are playing in the sport that's the "main event" and the girls are just the sideshow.

And I don't have a son, but if I do, I will do everything I can to dissuade him from playing football. I work as part of a pediatric brain injury team, and I see too many sports-related injuries, including strokes and repeat concussions. Not worth it, IMO.

Beware, not all rural schools are great.  The school district my dd graduated from, and ds1 did his middle school years has more bullying going on than ds1 s big city private school.  The new principal brought in drug sniffing dogs and from what we heard from ds1 s friends (reliability fair) approximately 1/4 of the school had drugs in their lockers and the search was announced a day or two in advance.

Ds1 was so bullied in 7th grade that I had to homeschool him AND he was terrified of even setting foot in the town that the school was in.  Ds1 s private counselor begged me to get him out of the school, hence homeschool since it was the only school in the district.  He returned to the school for 8th grade and was assaulted (jabbed in the arm with a sharp needle-like metal object) by a classmate (and classmate only got detention -police lost the report) and got into a fight with same classmate on the last day of school because the school put the two next to each other in line unsupervised.......I could go on but you get the idea.

Dd only did day care and was reading and doing simple math at 4. Ds1 did 2years of kindergarten due to an October birthday.  He barely made it in his first year and his K teacher was concerned about his readiness for first grade and we moved to NM and he wouldn't have made the cutoff the year he did K overseas so we decided to have him repeat K with his age mates instead of advancing to 1st to be with kids 1-2 years older than him.  He was 4 for pretty much the entire first quarter of his first year of K.

I'm debating already how I want to handle ds2 and preschool.  Since he has down syndrome he'll qualify for sped preschool......but I don't know yet if that will be the best placement for him.  Will depend on many factors, including things that we don't know about since it is probable that we will be leaving NE before he starts preschool.

We were at MIL's last week and she kept hers in the fridge. I took them out and tried to get them to ripen for 2 days on the countertop, and when I cut them up for DS they were so gross DS wouldn't eat them.

I'm definitely in the camp of serving fruit at room temp, except for watermelon (and I guess cantaloupe and honeydew if you eat those...eww). It makes me sad when I have to put fresh strawberries and blueberries in the fridge b/c they start getting sour so quickly. And room temperature grapes are SO rich and delicious.

I feel like most people's ratio of understanding what is actually happening in the government versus the amount they feel compelled to talk about it like they know what is happening is like 20 to 80. They understand 20% of the actual happenings but talk about it four times as much.
Yes!  So I tune myself out because there are so many different opinions and misunderstandings.  A Democratic friend I have will explain a situation to me and I think I get it, then a Republican friend will explain it and it sounds like they are talking about two completely different things.  I don't try anymore.
