Wildfires, Earthquakes So-Cal mommies

Ok all my so cal mom's we have had quiet a few quakes the last few days and we have a wildfire going on right now. How are you preparing with a newborn. Before if I had a bag of canned goods and water bottles I was all good. But now having a child makes it all different how are you dealing with it. If you are a stay at home mom how are you feeling about your SO being away from the house and the thought of a earthquake happening?

Re: Wildfires, Earthquakes So-Cal mommies

  • Oh crap. We're moving back west in about 2 months. I forgot about all of that stuff! I think I'll just always have gas in my car and an emergency bag packed. Snowstorms are so much easier to deal with!

  • I only went out to run to the store to stock up on nursey water and purfied water. I closed up the house and just keeping an eye on the news, I'm sure our pool will be full of ash....

You should actually have the same emergency kit plus maybe one of those foil blankets for snowstorms.  Running out of gas or losing power during a snowstorm, especially the kind we've been having lately, is at least as deadly as an earthquake.

Definitely need one for snowstorms too!! DS1 was only 3 months when we had that October snowstorm that knocked out our power for 10 days. We obviously weren't prepared for that and it was an absolute nightmare trying to get formula, diapers and such! The night it happened we all slept in the living room with LO in his snowsuit because our heat is electric. We had to drop some serious money on a generator which was crazy because they were flying off the shelves like hotcakes and I won't even get started on the nightmare that was trying to get gas. I guess the moral of my rant is to always be prepared for the worst. Supplies for baby, gas in the car, call hotels in the area to see how many rooms are available if you need to be out of the house, blankets.... Pretty much everything in your normal emergency kit! Hope you stay safe and won't need all those things though!

  • What?? Where in so cal...I haven't felt anything. I live near San clemente. That's kinda scary. Welp with DH gone for the night some nights there's nothing i can do if a quake did happen so I would handle it the best I could.
  • Where do you live? East of San Diego? I don't know when the last time I felt a quake was.

There's been quite a few quakes the past couple of nights in Fontana and mission viejo. I only know cause of the alerts on my phone. I haven't felt anything either.
That's really weird Bc I live 2 miles from mission Viejo and haven't felt anything. I guess I should be putting together emergency kits...idk what to even put in them. Never been in these types of situations before

In my kit I have enough canned food for three people for three days, I added formula singles, as well as a can of formula. I have forks, and single serve drink pouches like crystal light and hawian punch. I have cat and dog food. I also added peanutbutter and tuna has a long shelf life and peanut butter does not need to be put in the fridge. You need to have three gallons of water for each person and all the pets. A flashlight, a radio as well as blankets and a first aid kit. A transistor radio and batteries lots of batteries. Make sure you rotate your food items every 6 months and your water every year or so. Plastic plates, cups and forks and spoons and some bottles as well for the baby.

Thanks! I have a lot of that stuff so that's a good start. Lol. I will have to put this together just in case
  • Oh yeah, we're all set here in Western NY for sure. We're living with my folks in my childhood home so are more prepared here than we are for being back in SoCal. When we lived in SD for the 2007 Witch Creek fires, we had emergency bags packed; our house and cars were covered in ash and we were waiting for the evac word. I just prefer the snow and cold to threats of earthquakes and fires. I'm an odd duck who would rather shovel and rake than sit under a palm tree.

  • We've added diapers, formula, and extra sets of clothes to the kit.

I actually agree with you...we didn't come here by choice. Plus I like cold weather better. Cali is too expensive....it's nice to live by the beach and all but the prices of everything is just ridiculous.

At least with the snow it starts out slow, you never know when a earthquake is going to hit. And this fire buring in glendora went from 12 acres to 1700 in less then 5 hours. I rather deal with snow as well....

Stay safe! I'm watching the news right now and it said you could see the smoke from space. I wonder what those 3 ppl who started it did...they really fucked up
  • they started a camp fire, the winds whipped up and took the embers from the fire and ta da dry brush and hot ember equals horrible fire :(
