Musty smell in my Simplex dipes- any ideas?

DS is just over 2 months old and weighs about 13 pounds.  I've CD-ed him from the start with Lil Joeys and Kissaluvs AIOs with no problems.  He still fits in his NB Simplex diapers, so I'm primarily using those with some BG 4.0s and Elementals thrown into the mix since he's starting to fit into those. Lately his Simplex dipes have been smelling musty (like wet towels or stuff that's been in the basement or something).  They don't smell dirty, just musty, but it's driving me crazy.  It doesn't seem to be as bad on the wipes or the other diapers though- just faintly there.

I wash EOD with Charlie's, Bumgenius, or Rock'n Green (I alternate between them every couple washes) in a HE Samsung front loader.  I do a prewash no detergent (not sure of the temp), Heavy Duty hot/cold cycle, and then another cold rinse.  We have slightly hard water but have a water softener.  I was drying on a drying rack near our wood pellet stove, but when the stink started I thought maybe it was because they were sitting wet too long, so I have been drying them on medium heat in the dryer.  I ran a cleaning cycle and a bleach cycle to clean the washer, but that doesn't seem to help.  I'm going to try sunning them as soon as the Ohio weather cooperates, but it doesn't look that is going to happen anytime soon.

Any ideas on how to fix this?  Any insight or advice would be very much appreciated!

  • I suppose it is possible that the musty smell actually is them not getting clean enough. How much detergent are you using?

Usually 1 Tablespoon, almost 2 Tablespoons if it is a particularly big or dirty load.

  • Why are you alternating detergents? Do they smell when dry or after being peed in?

    It all revolves around you.
  • I had trouble with mine too. I have other AIOs and they didn't have problems. When they would start to get musty, I would bleach them.

I received Rock 'n Green as a gift and have heard bad things about it- so I wanted to use it, but not exclusively so they wouldn't develop stink.

Other than that no particular reason.

They smell the same fresh from the dryer or peed in.

Glad to know I'm not crazy! All our other diapers are fine. Maybe I'll try bleach.  Do you think boiling might help?

  • Don't boil them. The pul and snaps can melt.

This.  I found that the gathered leg area sometimes was still damp when they came out of the dryer.  It happens with my Grovia AIO, too. Drying them longer in the dryer or stretching them out to make sure air gets to that area when you air dry them will prevent it from happening again.
