Bed rest frustration

Last Wednesday I started to feel like my heart was racing and it wouldn't stop. I teach kindergarten so I had the school nurse check my blood pressure. It was 160/90. I called the doc and they sent me to L&D. They did an NST and took my blood pressure. It came down to 109/71. They told me to take the day off of work and go in for a follow up with my doc the next day. The next morning I went in and my BP was 140/90. They also found protein in my urine. They drew blood and then sent me home on modified bed rest with a 24 hour urine test. Friday I went back for an NST. They said I had 218mg protein in my urine but my BP looked good. No mention of the blood work so I assume that was fine too. Since then I went back for another NST and again my BP was fine and baby looked good. They pulled me out of work last week and because I'm a teacher, they already found a long term sub who is staying until I come back from maternity leave. Since Friday, my BP has been in the normal range. I guess I am just wondering if my doctor jumped the gun on the bed rest. I have another appointment tomorrow for an ultrasound so I'll be sure to get some answers then. I wonder if I'll get some more freedom. As of last week, I had to be on the couch or in bed except for showering or eating. I really feel for the ladies that have been on bed rest for a while! I give you a lot of credit!

Re: Bed rest frustration

  • This sounds very stressful but I'm glad you got a sub and don't need to work anymore. It sounds to me like your BP is a lot better when you rest, so probably it was the right decision. That being said, maybe they will allow you to do a little more each day and see how it goes? You could ask.

  • Bed rest is the pits, but definitely find some things you can do. Catch up on your reading or Netflix, do some crafting (I did cross stitch), have DH wash the baby clothes so you can fold and sort (and fawn over) them. It's a pain, but it doesn't last forever, and I'm sure it's helping your BP a good deal.
  • Has anyone had experience with being induced due to high blood pressure? I'm wondering if they can keep my BP normal with bed rest if they will let me go until labor starts naturally or if they'll induce me at full term
  • I was induced due to high blood pressure with DS at 39 weeks.  I was pulled out of work this pregnancy at about 30 weeks due to high blood pressure.  I've been on modified bed rest and my pressures seem stable and during the past week have even been back in the normal range.  My doctor says we will still induce at 39 weeks, unless my blood pressures spike in which case we will induce before 39 weeks.
  • I had high BP through my last pregnancy.  The bedrest is probably what's keeping your bp down atm.  My midwife had said last time that if I could keep my numbers good they would let me try to go into labor naturally, but I wasn't able to do that and was induced 2 days before my due date. Hopefully since your numbers are good they'll let you try to not be induced.  Good luck!
  • I started bedrest at 34 weeks due to high BP with my first pregnancy. They took every precautionary measure to watch for pre-e. Once I hit 39 weeks I was induced. My OB would not induce before then unless other problems came up.

I've had "borderline" high bp readings on and off this pregnancy but no bedrest yet.
