Traveling with LO??

How do you gals feel about traveling with LO? I'm dying to drive down to see some family. It's a five hour drive though, and LO is only four weeks old. My pediatrician says to limit taking him in public until his two month shots. But if I limit my stops on the way there, does this really count as taking him out in public a lot? The family I'd be staying with are retired and have had their Pertussis and flu vaccines. Just not sure what to do... What do you gals think?

  • I travelled 4 hours with LO when she was 3 weeks old. She's now 2 months and we've made that 4 hour trip to visit family, plus multiple shopping trips since. I say go for it !
  • I flew w my first born at 5 weeks to see my family. It was nbd. Go for it!
  • Do it.

I would do it in a heartbeat. Nobody is going to come up and lick your baby when you stop to feed them. Just stay in the car, etc. They'll be fine.

Licking babies. So tired I can't stop giggling at this!

I just have such a hard time figuring out how all the germs are supposed to get on the babies in the evil public.

Lol, I totally agree! It ruined my month when my pedi said to avoid taking him out for two months! Who can stand that?!?

  • We just did 1500km over 2 days with our 7 week old and we survived. Do it :) we just stopped and fed him when he started to fuss (BFing), I changed his diaper in my lap, burped and snuggled him for a few minutes, then the car seat would lull him back to sleep. I won't lie and call it fun but it's very doable.

  • Do it. Travel as much as possible now...travel with a newborn is a breeze compared to travel with a toddler.
  • Go for it, just be prepared to stop to feed :)

  • I'm flying this weekend with LO. I think driving would be a lot less worrisome. We got her 2 month shots a week early per her pedi's suggestion. I would talk to your pedi about the drive.

  • Sorry to thread jack but how are you ladies who bottle feed warm bottles while traveling? We are going out of town this weekend and I'm not sure how to warm them, we have a bottle warmer at home. Do you just feed them with room temp milk or use hot water?

We feed LO room temp formula bottles. When he has a BM bottle, we warm it. (We feed both breastmilk and formula.) I figure we'll just use a cup of hot water to warm the breastmilk while on vacation.

@ hswan91011  There is a car bottle warmer available that plugs in to the cigarette lighter. I have no idea if it works, but you can look it up if you're interested!

I use bottled water when out for the weekend with powered formula. So I guess it's room temp.
  • I took DD1 on a 22 hour car ride when she was two weeks old. My parents went with us to see my sister in college. We stayed the weekend held up in a hotel. DD was fine. Do it!!
  • I just moved to FL on the 1st of this month. It was a 21hr drive with stopping every 2 to 3 hrs for gas and to feed and change lo. It was not fun and I never wish to do it again, but he was good. He slept the whole time pretty much. I didn't take him in any gas stations or rest stops. I've also flown with him already and that went well too. I don't hide him from people for fear of germs. I even let a flight attendant hold him while I got settled into my seat. And he's hasn't gotten sick yet (knock on wood.)
  • DS2 is almost 3 weeks old. Yesterday, we drove 3 hours to SD's parents' night and basketball game and 3 hours back. We also went out to eat. I'd obviously go. Especially for family.

  • Man I am so jealous of you ladies!! My LO hates the car!!! I don't know what's wrong with him but he hates it, to the point of crying to the point of not breathing. I can't drive for more than 10 minutes without stopping the car to get him out to calm him down. :( anybody else have this issue?

No mine is the exact opposite. The car puts him to sleep almost instantly.

No, mine zonks out immediately! Do you have him tightly bound? Our carseat technician told us they should be bound as tight as possible.

Yes I had him tight, then thought maybe it was too tight so I tried loose. Now I know it's not that so it's back to tight. I've tried covering him with Muslin blanket, opening windows, playing music! Nothing is working! I REALLY hope he grows out of this soon! It's really hard to go anywhere!. My H is only home on weekends so it's just baby and I and I can't go anywhere! He even flipped out while I was rolling him around at Target in his car seat/stroller. So maybe it's just the car seat! I don't freaking know but it's stressful.
