Best Teaching Board Books for 1 Year Old

Hi ladies!

My little guy just turned one and is really interested in books right now - especially Brown Bear Brown Bear.  Are there other favorite board books that you can all recommend that helps teach numbers, letters, colors, body parts, animals etc?

I would love to hear your suggestions!!

Re: Best Teaching Board Books for 1 Year Old

  • He got "Chicka, Chicka, ABC" for Christmas & really likes it.I also have "One hundred ways to get to one hundred" It's meant for older children but he likes to look at the pictures & we pick out the numbers he knows. I figure any books are good books. I take him to the library & let him pick out his own. They have a little board book section that he can pick from.

  • My son loves the Spot books. We started with "Spot goes to Library" and now have about 20 different spot books from ABCs to counting. Lots of them have flaps, which are fun, too.

  • The "Happy Baby" board book series by Priddy Books are pretty perfect for teaching basic word recognition. There's no scintillating text, but great clearly-labelled photographs and a few basic sentences. There are Happy Baby Words (pages on body parts, clothing, animals, colors , etc.), Happy Baby Colors, Happy Baby ABC, etc.
  • DD loves the Bright Baby Priddy Books, especially the First Words one. She also really likes DK My First Body Board Book.
  • Ten Apples Up On Top
    Alphabet Zoo
    Whose Toes Are Those?
    Whose Knees Are These?
    Counting Kisses
    Head to Toe
Mister Brown Can Moo Can You?

Those are a few that leap to my head. Your local library may have a baby or toddler story time. Stop in and ask about these programs and try them! It's not just books, which are geared toward the audience's age, but there are also songs and movement games that are great learning tools as well!
  • I'm in the camp that any book your LO likes can help him learn-- you as the parent can point out the colors, count things in the pictures, ask him questions about what is in the pictures etc.

LO's fav board books are Brown Bear Brown Bear, Hungry caterpillar, the Sandra Boynton Going to bed book, Sandra Boynton Doggies book, Toes Ears & Nose and other Lift-the-flap books, and The Book of Sleep.  she also LOVES magazines and adult books with paper pages she can rip-- I now have a new market for all my junk mail.  I think even catalogs can be educational if you interact with your LO and point things out.

  • I love Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom ABC. We got the number one too and the rhyming isn't quite as good but I still like it.
  • Both my kids love Sandra Boynton books.  Moo Baa Lalalala and Blue Hat, Green Hat are two favorites.  Also, Sesame Street has a collection of $1 board books that teach colors, shapes, etc that my kids both love.  I find them at either Target or the Dollar Tree.

I agree with PP.  Head to the library and let your LO pick.  Any book is an opportunity to learn.
  • Not necessarily for teaching, but really likes 10 in the Bed and Llama Llama Nighty Night.
  • Thank you for all of the great suggestions!  My little guy attends the weekly library reading time with his Nanny since I work full time and also goes to music class where they do some teaching songs but I always like to hear what is working for everyone else.  I will definitely take a look at these.  Thanks again!
  • And thank you for the reminder of Spot books!  I remember loving them as a kid also.
  • DS LOVES
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (for ABCs)
    Ten Little ladybugs (for counting)
How do dinosaurs count to 10? (we LOVE all the "How do dinosaurs" books)
Boynton's From Horns to Toes (body parts)
Spot series (mentioned above) - we have the counting one, and the shapes one
Dr. Seuss series (Ear book; Nose book; Tooth book)

We also have the Sesame Street Bubbles Bubbles, and Eyes/Toes/Fingers and Nose
