Baby Names

Katniss

I know it screams Hunger Games. She was so awesome though! Could use Kat as a NN. Thoughts? I know you ladies will give it to me straight. Use it, or keep it a GP name?

Re: Katniss

  • If I can keep Kaiden as a GP, you can keep Katniss GP

  • I side eye twilight names sometimes but never make the connection effect my decision because at least they are real names. Katniss is just WAYYY to much.
  • If you want to use the NN Kat... name her Katherine. Katniss is awful.
  • I agree with pp's about Katherine or maybe Kathleen with nn Kat.

  • I havent read the books and saw one of the movies. Id say no. Katniss screams hunger games. Its not like Bella(Isabella), Hermione, and Ginny(Ginerva) that had popularity and history before Harry Potter and Twilight

  • Not good.

  • Katniss is on the same level as Khaleesi, made up and bound to the series it was created for. Fine for a GP though.

  • I loved Katniss in the movies, but this is not a "real life" name.  To me it would be like naming a boy "Frodo".  Just no!!!!

  • One of the reasons I didn't love the character was from page one I thought the name was ridiculous. And tho I kept reading it over and over again it never got better for me. Which usually names do, or I can at least begin to see past them. The fact that I never did is evidence of how bad I think the name is

  • GP. I totally get the temptation though: I had a period of half-seriously considering Tyrion.

First thing I thought of was catnip. I never saw Hunger Games so I don't know of that connection

  • And this is where I tag JollyWife and laugh. Too bad I can't remember her whole screen name.
  • Noooooo. Just no.

Long story short, I made a comment on a thread not long ago that no one on this board would condone the use of Katniss. She commented something about eye rolling or side eyeing my comment. I asked her why and she never answered me. This thread proves my previous point and I'm laughing.

    Absolutely nothing against OP.
  • I will just keep it in my GP box lol Thanks for the truth and laughter! This is why I love this board.

If you want your child to suffer a lifetime of being called "catnip," then sure, go right ahead.

    ^ Yup.

  • When I see Katniss all I hear is catnip/cat hiss. I don't see the appeal of the name at all. It is odd sounding - which is why it was fitting for the book set far in the future.

    I love Catherine/Katherine though :)
  • Even if it were a real name, I am not a fan.

GP for sure and I have to say I think she sucked.....she just did what everyone told her to do or wanted her to do the entire series.....she never thought for herself!!
Not to get all English teacher-y, but that was kind of the point. It's a major theme of the series. The concept of being "just a piece in their games" is carried throughout the books. She's a child who is being used by everyone: the Capitol, the rebels, etc. There are moments where she breaks through that in each book: the berries, Coin, etc.
And, not to get all bitchy, but all of the PPs who answered referring to the movies, y'all realize Katniss is a LITERARY character, right?

Literary?  We're using the word literary to describe The Hunger Games now?

Perhaps mine is an unpopular opinion...  :-)
I'll sit with you on the UO bench.  I've never read the books, so I can't comment on their quality; Should I ETA: to delete the word LITERARY and replace it with the plain ol' word book?  I'll explain my edit as being too generous.

  • I could perhaps get on board with Primrose.
  • "twi-hard"? That's a good one. While we're on Hunger Games names, if the baby was to be a boy we were leaning toward Seneca which is a long time fave of mine that now gets associated with the book/movie. How much does currently trendy pop culture get to sway one's opinion? There's got to be some sort of tipping point formula on that. I don't follow US TV or movies so I am unaware of many name associations within pop culture, yet want to be aware if I'm choosing something that has taken on a separate life of it's own. For example, there was someone here inquiring about Elmo which has one extra strong association above all else. Katniss does, too.
  • The only good things she did was kill president coin and marry peeta.
  • Names that were made up for books that I like:  Wendy, Cora, etc.

Names that were made up for books that should stay that way: Katniss, Khaleesi, etc
  • If someone comes on here in the next few days and wants to name their child Potato, I'm blaming ALL OF YOU.

I'm not overly fond of Katniss, but I'm not going to hate on it either. If that is the particular character or book of literature that inspired you... go for it. It's better to have a name after something you like than some textbook tradition. I have gamer friends who have specifically named their children after characters. It's really your flavor, but be prepared for everyone to do the 'seriously?' face at you when you say your daughter's name is Katniss. Especially if she looks nothing like Jennifer Lawrence.

I'm looking at your baby badge and am in a state of paralyzing admiration. Where did the decision to use Atlas come from?

It's one of the few names I've always wanted (Duncan was our runner up). I'm pooling from Greek mythology mainly although Atlas was actually not that miraculous of a Titan. Some refer to 'Atlas Shrugged'. So then, I point them to the video game Bioshock. Just because it's fun. I already know what I'm going to be dealing with for my son. And I haven't had anyone besides my aunt mock it at all. :)

    Just shrug the nay-sayers off!!

    See what I did there?

Atlas is a very strong name.  I can dig it.

Potato is the next great suggestion of a formal name for Tate, which has too much of a NN sound to be a stand alone ;)
