NBR:Paleo diet

Anyone here doing / or has done the Paleo diet? My sister in law has had great success with it and I'm thinking about trying it. I've really gotta loose weight and live a healthier life style.

Anyway, curious if anyone here has tried it and what are your opinions on it?

I'm wanting my family to be healthier also, is it a good life style for kids to be on also?

Re: NBR:Paleo diet

  • I tried Paleo, and it works. It's just really hard to stick to it since they wont let you eat carbs.

That was the main diet I used when I lost weight for my wedding. I would say 30 out of the 40 lbs I lost was attributed by that diet.

I lost the majority of it in 5 months. I really do have to say-its really hard to cut out carbs. I think it's OK to have them in moderation (calorie count and count your carbs too).

I normally have a hard time losing weight, and I've struggled with weight my whole life, and the paleo diet worked for me. I also calorie counted, and worked out about 45 mins every other day. I know its hard to work out with a baby, but I just started back up, and use the 30 day shred dvd by jillian michaels. I really like her work outs.

Edit: I also wanted to add to not cut out carbs completely, it would be really hard to do. Just count them, and make sure they're under 40-50 grams. I also splurged on the weekend and wouldn't calorie count.

  • A friend of mine was doing the paleo diet and cross-fit and actually had a stroke. She was only 26. I know that they probably didn't cause the stroke, but it was scary enough that it has made me wary of both. They just seem extreme to me.

  • Like I said, the paleo diet was just a foundation for my weight loss. Like PP's have mentioned- portion control (calorie counting) and moderation (counting carbs) are really the key.

How do you like the 30 day shred, I tried it before but I find it so boring, I am thinking of trying it again but now sure how to get through the workouts.

It seems lots of people have success with it though.
I like it, but to be honest, I don't think i've gotten past the 3rd week, I normally rotate between week 1, 2 and 3. Week 4 is just brutal.

I also have a dvd for pilates, and I really enjoy it. Its more about core strengthening than sweating your ass off. lol

  • I really suggest signing up for caloriecount.about.com, I log in every day and always keeps me in check. You can set your goal, and it'll tell you how much to eat every day, and when you log in food, it tells you what nutrients you need, or what you exceeded. Its awesome.

  • I love Jillian Michaels workouts, and right now I'm doing P90X3 and like it a lot.  30 minutes is my sweet spot for getting a work out in most days.

Also, I recommend myfitnesspal.com for keeping track of calories and types of food - it's really easy to use and they have a lot of recipes/nutrition info already loaded.  I lost about 12 lbs before I got pregnant by counting calories and doing Jillian Michaels (went from about 124 to 112, so I didn't have a ton to lose, but those 10 lbs were the hardest I've ever tried to lose!)

How to y'all track your workouts? By individual workout or can you search P90X3/30 Day Shred and log it that way?
I'd rather not have to log push ups/sit ups/lunges/etc, one by one

the activity log on calorie count is more like an estimate. When I type in 30 day shred, it comes up as circuit training, which it is. I just use that as for my 30 day shred log.

Pretty much same thing with myfitnesspal - I count Jillian Michaels as circuit training for 30 minutes.  For P90X3 the workouts are a little more specific so either weight training for 30 minutes or cardio for 30 minutes.  One of the workouts is pullups/pushups and you can easily count how many you do so I did that.  (I did 120 pushups and 180 fake pull ups - I used the resistant band instead of actually doing pull ups - in one 30 minute workout!)
