August 2012 Moms

Which daycare?

Gosh this seems so trivial with the other stuff going on in our A12 family, but if you have a spare minute, help me make a decision, mamas.

Over the weekend, we moved cross country and are now happily settled (temporarily) with friends while we start house hunting. We toured two DC's today and I'd like to sign dd up to start transitioning this week. I start my new job on Wednesday of next week.

Which of these would you choose? Both places we're considering have nice staff, cheerful rooms and some outdoor space. Price difference is negligible.

DC 1: next door to the gym I'm planning to join. Better daily schedule for us in that lunch and nap time are a little later in the day. Downside: they watch a Disney show every day while the teacher is prepping lunch. If it's a snowy/rainy week and they can't go outside for several days, they may watch a movie in the afternoon.

DC 2: only 5 min further from our temporary home than DC 1 but I would still have to get back in the car to hit the gym. No tv's in any room but they have 15 minutes or so of computer time every day. Lunch and nap are an hour earlier in the day, same as her previous DC, which I think is contributing to DD's ongoing early waking. No chance to adjust her night sleep if daytime lunch and nap are still early.

Re: Which daycare?

  • I am obsessed with sleep, so I'd pretty much always go with the one that matches my child's sleep schedule.

In my opinion, there should be no TV or computers for kids this age.  But that's a very unpopular opinion and most daycares would not share that opinion.

  • We don't do any screen time at home, but honestly, I really wouldn't care about a 30-minute TV show per day or a movie on a rainy day.  If that's the only downside of Option 1, I'd be fine with it.

Good luck with your house hunt and getting settled!  Out of curiosity, where did you move from/to?

  • @L12541 from Oakland, CA to south Jersey, outside philadelphia. What a trek!

  • That's a long move!  We moved from New Hampshire to San Diego 5 years ago, but that was pre-baby - I'm sure it would be a lot more complicated now :)

  • #1...don't stress about a minimal amount of TV.
  • #1 makes for happier dcp's too. A little help by the tv to get meals prepared is ok in my book.
  • I'd choose #1. Convenience > small amounts of tv IMO

  • I would go with #1.   More convenient for you and a little TV is not going to hurt.   Besides some kids just are not into it.  You can have a TV blaring and the only way it is going to attract DD is if there is a touchdown and/or large play of a football game.   Otherwise she is not interested at all.

Good Luck with the new job.   Is this the one that you flew to the interview and were wanting to get?

  • @countrybb1 it is! Good memory! Yes, I got the job, obv. I had about 5 weeks to give notice at my old job, pack, and move. We sold our only car in CA and are driving a rental now. After day care, my next step is to buy a car!

  • That is an intense 5 weeks!  Have fun car shopping.   I like that in Jersey you are not allowed to pump your own gas, and I truly dislike pumping it.   Good luck getting used to no left turns, that one still thows me.  :)
