When do you feel a flutter?

I'm 14w3d and curious when I might feel something. I've heard that for FTMs a lot of times you don't realize it is what it is.

I was just laying here on the couch and thought I might have felt a strange flip flop in my lower belly.

Re: When do you feel a flutter?

  • I'm 14w5d and I'm hoping soon! Dunno what it'll feel like but I hope I know! So excited to feel it moving!

  • that's what most movement feels like to me, at least from last time with dd

in the early days it just felt like light flips or butterfly wing flutters, a bit of both

this time I have felt a few flips & that's it so far

once I was further along last time then I could feel the legs digging into my ribs, and see/feel limbs poking out

  • I'm almost 16 weeks, wondering the same thing! (FTM).
  • It's so hard to explain! Some people explain it as flutters or like popcorn. With my first I felt at 15w5d and then first poke (kick) around 17w5d. That's early compared to what I read.

This time I've felt something about three times total in the past week. It's not consistent at all and won't be for a looooong time :)

  • Honestly, my first child I didn't feel anything till about 17/18 weeks, and then it feels like butterflies trapped in your belly, at least to me, it may feel different to other people. DH was able to feel kicking on the outside at 20 weeks.

  • It's different for all women! I wish we could know when baby will move but itll happen soon! The most common time is said to be 16 wks I think?
  • STM. I'm 15w3days. Started to feel flutters last week and getting stronger. I think w DS I was Ab 18w

  • I can't wait! Although now all I can think about is a snake in my belly. But so far I've just got gas!

  • I think I felt it for real between 16-18 weeks...at first it is like tingly butterfly flutters. I thought it was gas, in hindsight I kind of figured it out. Sometimes it did feel like the snake- or REALLY bad thick stuck  gas that suddenly gets to move.

After a while I noticed patterns...ds was always active at 10 pm (which kept up after birth), it's kind of cool.

  • I felt the first flutters with DS at about 16 weeks. I swear that this pregnancy, I felt the baby move around 13 weeks, but I may be crazy.

  • I'm a STM, and thought I may have felt a flop the other day when I was leaning against a register at work, helping one of my cashiers. I'm only in the 11th week, so it's a very real possibility it was a gas bubble. Either way, it felt funny, in a good way :) and I'm not feeling anything when I'm just sitting around

  • When pregnant with my first set of twins, I only remember distinctly feeling a kick at 20 weeks. With DD I don't even remember. For sure after 16, maybe even 18 weeks. This time I feel like I may have felt flutters, but then I wonder if it's just gas or something. Don't worry about feeling nothing yet.

It's so hard to explain how it feels. Almost like gas, but not where you'd feel gas, if that makes sense. Feels like something you've also never really felt before, like others said. If you think it's baby it may be baby! But it's normal not to feel anything for awhile.

  • I had an elective ultrasound on the 10 and the baby was lazy lol. He wasn't very active and I'm 15w2d. I also found out my placenta is anterior so I'm guessing I'll be feeling later on :/
  • I feel movement the most when I'm sitting on the couch or laying down. Maybe b/c it's easier to notice?

  • I just assume everything I feel is due to gas.

    (It is)
  • I thought I was feeling flutters around 15 weeks with DD, but I wasn't sure.  I didn't definitely know it was a kick until I felt it on the outside at 18 weeks.

Yep same here.  My doctor also told me that I could expect to feel more ligament pain from them stretching, although I haven't noticed that yet.

Me too, or because of increased blood flow sometimes I think I feel my own heartbeat in my pelvis. That one feels weird.

  • I'm a ftm and overweight. I wasn't expecting to feel anything for a while, but Saturday I felt the flutters. Only when sitting in a specific position and just one other time since then. I was convinced it wasn't baby, but my friend (nurse for an OB) says that it most likely was baby from what I described.

  • I'm STM @ 15 weeks felt a "popcorn" type thump very lightly yesterday. I was so tickled.

  • I just asked the u/s tech this question Friday. She said everyone is different but usually between 16 and 20 weeks and then real kicking between 20 and 24 weeks. She said she didn't feel the first kick with her son until 24 weeks.
  • With DS, I felt movement around 17 weeks. It felt like little gas bubbles popping. I have felt nothing so far with this one, but its early. Apparently the baby is still so far down that the Doppler couldn't pick up a heartbeat last week (the ultrasound did, so I was able to regain normal breathing), so I don't expect to feel anything for a few more weeks.

I was also told I had an anterior placenta at my last ultrasound. I was kind of bummed, since I am waiting patiently to feel my LO! I heard that the placenta can always move to a different spot as everything grows, so maybe it will and I'll start feeling something sooner? I think that's wishful thinking though! I wonder when women with an anterior placenta usually start feeling the baby? Anyone know? Also that stretching thing makes sense! I definitely still have a lot of stretching cramps and ligament pain.

With DS I had an anterior placenta and I don't think I felt much till 22-24 weeks.

  • I had an anterior placenta with DS (and again this time). I felt him move at 18 weeks. I don't think an anterior placenta will keep you from feeling the baby, because you can still feel them on the inside, but it will make it take longer to feel the kicks from the outside (with DS at about 23 weeks).

  • With my first pregnancy I didn't feel anything until 21.5 weeks. I'm only 14.5 weeks now and not expecting anything for another month or so.

  • Thanks for the info! My doc just said it will take longer than normal, but didn't specify a time. I can't wait for the first time I can for sure say it was the baby moving!
  • I am a STM.. For my first, I was 16 wks... I am only 12 wks right now and super excited for the flutters to be felt!
