Toddlers: 24 Months+

Full size bed for Toddler? Bedding options?

We are looking to transition our 2 1/2 year old into a new room within the next 3 months before the new baby comes.  Currently we have a full size bed in there. We are debating whether to just move her from her crib into that full size bed (only a few years old) or if we should toss it and get a toddler/twin bed.

Has anyone transitioned their toddler from a crib to full size bed?  Any issues I'm not thinking of?  Or should we just get a little bed for her to save space?

Also, if we do keep the full size bed, does anyone know where I can find cute little girl bedding?  I'm particularly looking for themed bedding like Bubble Guppies, princesses, etc as opposed to just plain pink or "girly" styles.  It seems like most of the character bedding is only in toddler/twin sizes.

Any advice on bed size or bedding stores to try?  Thank you.

Re: Full size bed for Toddler? Bedding options?

  • Both of my kids went from crib to full sized beds (with bed rails). They both did great with it and love the extra space. For bedding we ordered from JC Penney for DD and Overstock for DS, but we didn't do characters. DD has purple butterfly/flower stuff and DS has trucks on his bedspread.

  • A twin isn't a whole lot smaller than a full, and a toddler bed had a limited shelf life-- so I wouldn't bother getting another bed personally.

I got DSs duvet and bedding from ikea but I just wanted a solid color (I opted to use removable transportation themes wall decals to give his room some interest instead)

  • I would go straight to the full, no point in buying something if you don't need it. When we were looking for twin doc mcstuffins comforters we saw full options at both walmart and toys r us.

  • We have minnie mouse theme for our full size bed from toyrus.  Can't comment on the transition because she won't sleep in the bed yet.  It is set up in her room and we read and snuggle in it but she wants to get back in her crib.  I am in no hurry or pushing her so it is not a big deal.  She tells me when she turns 3 she might sleep in it :)  Part of this could be that her sister (10 months old) sleeps in a crib too.

  • Definitely keep the full size bed! Since we transitioned we've needed to lay down with her every night and so I wish we had a full! As for bedding everything kiddo themed I've seen at Target or PBK comes in twin a and full!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies!  What you say about sticking with the full size makes sense.  I'll keep looking for the character themes.  I didn't even think to try BRU!  Duh!  Thank you!

  • We upgraded our queen to a king a while back, so DD is getting the queen.  Right now it's just the queen mattress on the floor; she'll get our own bed frame when she wants the bed frame.  I just get regular adult sheets (never wanted the others), but I think I've seen kids sheets in full before (at least at Ikea).

  • I'd go with the full. We transitioned DD1 to a toddler bed and then a full. I wish we'd skipped the toddler bed. She fell out of it all the time and honestly did not sleep well in it. As soon as we transitioned to the full she stopped falling out of bed and started staying in her bed all night. We bought sheets from Pottery Barn kids. They're not character sheets, but they definitely look more like kid sheets.

  • My 26mo daughter got a full for Christmas and bedding from Pottery Barn. She had a hard time the first week or two adjusting from her toddler bed to the full, but I expected that. We just stuck with it and she loves it now.

  • Kohl's and Target had some cute full-sized themed bedding. We went with a non-character set because I didn't want to be buying new stuff every time her interests changed.

The transition to full bed shouldn't be too bad. We had a convertible crib and used a mesh rail when we took the front panel off until she started sleeping in the "correct position" (head on pillow all night, staying under the blankets, etc.). We gave her a full-size bed for her 3rd birthday and she has no trouble staying in it at all.
