Are there boxsprings for cribs?

Silly question.... If not, how do you get the height up? And if there is a crib skirt what does it go on top of? (like below)

Re: Are there boxsprings for cribs?

  • No box spring. The crib height is adjustable. Mine has 3 different levels.

  • no boxsprings!  i laughed when i read the question, and then i thought...  hey, that's actually a valid question for someone who's never seen the inner workings of a crib before.  no shame in asking!

the metal interior horizontal frame that supports the crib mattress adjusts by moving metal bars up and down within the frame of the crib itself.  this is why you hear about moms saying "i had to lower the crib when the baby started pulling to stand".  the cribskirt is laid out over the metal wire frame surface and then the mattress is placed on top of it to secure it in place.  once the crib height is lowered all the way down, there's usually not enough room for a skirt too.  the skirt just hides the ugly inside/underside of the crib when the mattress is set at the highest level.

hang on a min...  i'll run up to the nursery an snap a shot of ours, which is set at the highest setting but doesn't yet have the crib skirt on it.  you'll be able to see a better picture of what i'm describing, i think.

    be right back!
  • Our crib has two heights.  The crib skirt was perfect on the highest height, but I took it off when we moved the mattress down to the lowest setting. I was going to hem the skirt underneath the mattress to shorten it, but I never got around to it.
  • Most cribs have a metal cage looking adjustable thing that the mattress goes on. It's starts high for when the babies are small and then it lowers as they get older so they can't easily get out. I believe most crib skirts are made to be adjustable, or if they are long enough when the crib is raised you can adjust from the top to pull up the hem if not. You would just put the crib skirt over the wire caging base and the mattress on top of it like you would a dust ruffle between a box spring and mattress :)

    ~~Everyone Always Welcome~~

  • 1 of 2: you can see why a crib skirt helps hide the empty space and exposed hardware underneath when at the highest newborn setting.
  • 2 of 2: an under-crib shot of the wire frame that the mattress is set on. This is what adjusts to different heights.
  • Thank you!! I will add CRIBSKIRT to my list!!
