August 2014 Moms

work or stay home?

Not sure if this has been asked but figured I would start a new topic. Do you work or stay home? Do you plan to work when baby arrives?

Work currently and plan to continue to work when baby arrives.  I don't think I'd be very good at being a SAHM.

ETA- dammit, those generic avatars get me every time! We don't like you, lady.

I work full time and likely will continue to do so after this child is born. DH and I have comparable salaries so we'd take a huge income hit if I decided to stay home and would go from financially reasonably comfortable to very stretched. I would love to work part-time someday but in my current job that isn't very likely to be allowed/accepted.

DD is in full-time daycare and we may consider switching her to a nanny plus part-time preschool after this next child comes along. Decisions, decisions.

ETA - woah...should've caught up on the FFFC first

  • Work. SAHM's are saints!!! I am not a saint. Maternity leave was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

  • I actually think working is easier then being at home. I work part-time which seems to be the perfect balance for me.

I just caught up on all the craziness too.

    1) I started paperwork today to reenlist. I love working and I can't imagine a life where I don't have a career. Also I really like money, and FI doesn't make enough for us to live comfortably on just his salary. (The Army didn't make us millionaires, unfortunately)
    2) You should probably go to college, seeing as how you married your HSS and got KU at age 18. While I realize that there are very few lucky exceptions to the rule that stay married and live happily ever after, given your personality and immaturity, I highly doubt that you are one of them. Get a job and an education, cause when you're single in 3 years, you're going to need it. Also- you need to rethink your life.

ETA: stay married and live happily ever after that get married at age 18.. Did not mean that everyone's married is doomed haha
  • Work but that might change depending on if I get hired back next year. If I don't get hired back I will SAH.

  • I was a stay at home mom with my first and am now working and planning to continue after this baby comes. There are definitely pros and cons with both so you just have to decide what's right for your family. I'm hoping that one day I can be back at home, but for now this is working. Also, apparently I missed some drama since I'm not a regular bumper. I married my hss so there will be no judgement from me there; like others. We dated for 8 years and I got pregnant with my 1st after finishing my masters. We didn't need ivf, however, I get more excited for those ladies bc I have seen first hand how much effort they put into having a child. I would not be judging; you are young and have a lot of life experiences that will proof you wrong. I have a string feeling that this child will do just that... I wanted to breast feed...couldn't, didn't want my son to have any sugar until after 1...grandparents, didn't want him to take antibiotics...6 before he was 1 yr. At the age of 1 he gots tubes in and adenoids out. I thank god for the ability to make him feel better with science since every natural remedy we tried did nothing. Children make you throw your hands in the air and admit you know nothing; you're just doing your best. You will do anything to not see your baby suffer; even if that means supporting your daughter if she needs ivf one day I'm sure.

  • I stay home and will continue to after the baby is born. My husband really enjoys his job so we only plan for him to work.
  • I always wanted to be a SAHM but after 3 months of maternity leave I was really missing my job, which I love. I work now and will continue to work after. I'm lucky in that my job has some odd hours and is incredibly flexible, which is great for having young kids.

@ladyabagail what are you going to do if *god forbid* your husband were to die or become disabled? You have no job, no formal education, very little if any experience, and kid(s) to take care of... Good luck in the real world with your *traditional* beliefs and your *real* non science baby...

I don't think anyone in the August 2014 board gives a damn. To the other SAHM posts on here, sorry you got high jacked. Is there a way to block @ladyabagail from the bump?

  • This is the only topic I've started so I'm not sure what you are talking about. I can post here if I want. If something were to happen to my husband or with his job we have family that would be able to help. He has been at the theater for 2years and was just made head usher so we know they don't plan to let him go but thanks for the concern. Just because some of your marriages haven't worked doesn't mean that will happen to us, we are very happy.
  • And I officially believe you are rude
  • I'm living real life maybe you should give it a try and not worry so much about what an internet stranger is doing. You are being a cyber bully.

OMG @ladyabagail are you that obtuse? Have you read the 16 PAGES of people telling you how much of a jackass you are? You keep posting on here, like there is nothing wrong, and you think you will get support from other moms. Just because you start a discussion away from the FFFC discussion doesn't mean we don't see you! You must have some kahoneys to tell another mom that she is rude. You are so far beyond rude that I can't even.... Quick question for ya. When is your SIL due? I am hoping we in the August 2014 moms board can find her and send her lots of virtual hugs. You aren't welcome here @ladyabagail stop posting.

  • I quit my full time job after I had my 1st LO. I still plan to be home with this one too.
  • Some small part of me actually feels bad for this idiot that she is so naive. Man is she going to hate herself in the future when reality socks her in the face. I don't usually wish bad things on people but I hope it hits her hard and knocks some sense into her before she messes up her poor kid.

I actually do too. She has some truly messed up ideas, but shes only 18 so I have to assume that that is how she was parented. Sad. I feel bad for her because sooner or later (probably sooner) reality is going to hit.. and she is completely unprepared for it. I really just feel bad for her kid though. I'm puurrttyy certain she's got no insurance to take care of the kid, and I can't even imagine how they're making ends meet with his job right now, let alone when the baby comes. yeesh.

ETA: Not that one's parenting is an any way an excuse for hurting other people. At some point, you have to be an adult and recognize that sometimes, just maybe, your parents were wrong about some stuff.

So glad my tax dollars will be supporting you, the child you are married to, and the child you are bringing into the world. I know a $20,000 a year job sounds impressive at 18... but trust me, it's not. Do you have any idea how much being a grown up actually costs?
THIS.  THIS EXACTLY.  Seriously, she probably stays home cause she's too lazy to work and that income would cut off all of their government benefits.  Way to abuse the system sweetheart.  You're not a grown up, you're a leech..

ETA: I actually am a SAHM, BUT we can afford that option.  If my husbands career ambitions were limited to ushering, I would work to provide for my family... Or I'd choose a spouse with an actual career path, and work to help him achieve those goals.

  • Oh honey, you have a lot of growing up to do. Its clear you have the typical teenage mentality that you know everything. I thought that too til reality kicked my butt. One day you will look back at this and think wow they were right.
