NCDR- Breastfeeding Q Re weaning and mastitis

edited January 2014 in Cloth Diapering
Copied and pasted from BF board, but no response there, yet. And I like you ladies better. ;)

I am newly pregnant and I'm already getting sensitive breasts. I have made the decision to formula feed until Logan is a year. It saddens me, but we have made it 9 months, and that's a good run. I have had to boost his calories with 2-3 bottles of formula a day and I'm getting overwhelmed with it all. (he is a skinny boy). Also, he isn't nursing well, maybe my milk tastes funny?

How do I wean and not have issues with mastitis and clogged ducts? If I don't feel engorged, I shouldn't get it, right? Although sometimes I can't tell the difference between pregnancy ache and engorgement.

Right now I'm planning on nursing when I get full, and FF in between. Is this a bad idea?

ETA - The transfer ate my paragraphs. :)

  • I was still nursing when I got pregnant and you have my sympathies. Pregnancy boobs can make it hell. My milk dried up so I didn't have problems with mastitis or anything, but sounds like you're doing the right thing, keep on nursing some and you can even hand express when you need to.

  • Today and yesterday he didn't nurse very well. He pretty much snacked and didn't have much interest. Would my milk taste funny already? I'm very early in this pregnancy, around 4 weeks. I hope that doesn't make me sound crazy! Haha

  • I think it can change pretty early. Let him snack or hand express to comfort. Your supply might drop enough due to pg hormones that it won't be an issue. Also, cabbage leaves. Put cold green cabbage leaves in your bra. (Purple stains!) Antihistamines like Benadryl can dry you up too, but I don't know if you want to take that while pg.
9 months is a great run. Good job!

  • Thanks for the support ladies. I'm feeling kinda bad about it, and slightly selfish. But he doesn't care what he eats as long as he's fed. He's a fat kid on the inside. ;)

I already take Zyrtec D, since I have asthma that's triggered mostly by my allergies, that my doctor approved. It has the same potential to drop supply.

I might be irrationally scared of mastitis, but I have heard stories and don't want to deal with it! Haha

  • E is 17 months and I still feel guilty quitting bc I'm pg. It's such an emotional decision. You need to do what is right for your family, yourself included.

  • I weaned at 9 months as well. No issues with mastitis or clogged ducts. My plan was dropping a nursing session every day or so. There were a couple of days where I had to pump a 1/2 ounce or so to relieve engorgement, but all went well.

That said, if you start to feel like you have the flu - see your doctor immediately. I had mastitis when DD was 3 months old and wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • My supply hasn't been great anyway. I decided to nurse him for his morning feed because I'm fullest then, and I was going to nurse him before bed and I forgot!!! I hope I'm okay til morning. Ugh. I can't believe I forgot. :( I would really rather not wake him.

  • You might be uncomfortable, but it should be fine. You can hand express to comfort if you need to.
