Girl's name

Penelope or Maia With middle name: Anne or Ann Thanks!

Re: Girl's name

  • Of the two, I feel Penelope "goes" better with the middle name Anne than Maia.

I also prefer the spelling Anne.  My middle name is Ann and I used Anne for DD's middle name, have always preferred it with an "e".

Penelope Anne is lovely.  Nice choice.

  • Yeah, I'm not 100% sure on how to pronouce Maia either... but regardless I do like Penelope.  As for the Ann or Anne, if one of the spellings is more meaningful (in honor of a family member or something) then go for it.  I have pretty equal feelings on either.

    <---- Not helpful.  Sorry.  :)

  • Maia is the Greek spelling for Maya. Our family is Greek. Thank you to those with kind responses :)
  • When I try to say Maia Ann out loud, it comes out like one long name as opposed to 2 distinct names, so I would go with Penelope if Ann/Anne is a definite.

I love the name Penelope Ann(e), and I don't even care if you use the e :)

ETA: I used to babysit a Maia, and I never had any problem with it when I saw it in writing, I think it's beautiful I just like Penelope better with Anne.

  • Anne/Ann is a definite. It's a family name belonging to my mom who has passed and my MIL.

I personally don't like either. DD has a friend named Penelope and everyone calls her Pippi. It's annoying. And I didn't know how to pronounce the other name until you explained it. You may want to think about that cause that will be your kid for the rest of it's life explaining her middle name and how to correctly spell and pronounce it. I have a weird name and it' a pain to spell it out for people.

    edited for spelling, oops.

  • Penelope Ann/Anne sounds better.  I agree that Maia Ann/e sounds too much like one name.  I knew right away how to say Maia btw.
  • I like either name, but I'd also suggest spelling Maia differently. Is it pronounced like Maya Rudolph from SNL? If so, that's a pretty name too. I agree with Anne always ending in an e.
  • Have you asked the baby name board? They are like the name gods. Ha
  • Maia (like Maya, right?). I feel like it's more fluid in adulthood.

  • I like both but prefer Penelope...it is pretty popular now days though if that matters
  • I'm a little surprised that others had a hard time with Maia - I immediately pronounced it "Maya" in my head, and I like the different spelling (my kid has a weird name, though, so I'm not always in line with most of opinions on names).

I really like Maia, but I agree that Anne probably wouldn't be a good fit.  Penelope Anne does work, and I agree, Anne, not Ann.

  • maia with a mn starting with an a sounds too slurry for me, but i love the name maia. your spelling is one of the traditional spellings, so it doesn't look made up to me.

penelope ann(e)  flows better to me than penelope anna.

  • Name your baby what you want and spell it how you want (with the exception if Bonequisha and all that ish). My name is Cindy. Not Cindy Lou, not Cynthia, not Cinderella, and peoole STILL find ways to mix up and misspell that ish. I get Sindy, Cyndi, Sindi, you name it. Could my mom have made it any easier?! So if people are gonna have problems with basic ish anyways, might as well satisfy yourself and what you want your baby's name to be.
  • I think if you like Maia and it has cultural meaning to you, then go for it. I knew it was pronounced "MY-uh" at first glance, but maybe I'm just wierd. I don't know anyone named Penelope, or Maia, but if you're gonna use Anne, I agree with PP that is does sound a bit like "Mayan". That being said, it's not like she will be called Maia Ann on a daily basis. Unless that's kinda what you were going for :) End point, name your kiddo what you want! Can't please everyone...
  • My mom called me Penelope as a nick name growing up. Not even close to my real name at all. She thinks I need to name my lil one that too.

    Maya is cute too
  • Must be a California thing because Maia is the main way I have seen it spelled. I love Maia Anne. ( I think Anne is prettier than Ann. That said DD middle name is Ann because DH thought the e looked silly)

  • I don't think you need to worry about people pronouncing names right on the first try. I have a very unique Italian first name (my dad is from Italy) and people usually mess it up a little but it's phonetic so they get close enough. We have Greek friends with traditional names and I love them. I think old country names are beautiful and less generic. Go with the Greek spelling if you want.

  • I like Maia and had no problem with the spelling
  • I like Penelope Anne. I immediately read Maia to be pronounced like 'Maya'. I think there isn't enough vowel separation between the ending A sound on Maia and the beginning A sound on Anne (Ann), which is why a PP mentioned it didn't flow well.
