Separation Anxiety

So ds did his waking up and screaming last night. We didn't give in to sleeping with him though. DH went in first and tried to get him back to sleep. Fail. We waited 15 long minutes then I went in to get him back to sleep. Fail. We waited 20 long minutes. Then I sent dh back in and told him to lay him down(he stands up and won't put himself back down) and sit in the chair. I told him to tell him he's safe and it's time for bed. He does this an has to lay him down several times then ds screams while on all fours. Meanwhile I'm watching on the monitor crying. After about 15 minutes ds finally lays his head down and falls asleep. He is still asleep an it's after 7. We were up with this from 1:15-3:30.

I truly believe it's separation anxiety. He was dosed with meds for teething last night and he STTN the night before. It's so random when he does this but it's been a few times this week alone. Do you ladies think the sitting the chair method is best for separation anxiety? What would you do? I'm happy it worked last night but I'm afraid of going through this again:( we will start with the chair next time. Thoughts? Any other suggestions? Now I need coffee to make it through my Friday!

Re: Separation Anxiety

  • This was exactly us last night, except DS is now awake for the day. Ugh!
The only thing that has been working for us is for one of us to go in his room, pick him up, and lay with him in the recliner so he falls back asleep. I agree with you, this feels like seperation anxiety! Maybe mixed in with a nightmare? I don't know, but it's taking a toll. It's so random, some nights he's good.
Naps have been crazy too. The last 2 days he skipped his! How have your naps been going with LO??

  • We have been going through something very similar and I actually do exactly what you do. I figure if it's separation anxiety at least I'm there but I'm not rocking him or laying with him. Hopefully it gets better soon for both of us!

  • His naps are hit and miss too. He's so unpredictable these days. I'm sorry I'm not alone but it's nice to know too.

It almost feels mean to not comfort him if it's separation anxiety but he can't get in the habit of sleeping with us either. I'm glad the chair method is being used. It feels less mean to be there even if he is still screaming:(
  • We went through this a couple weeks ago and every time we sat in the chair with DD and she feel asleep, she would start screaming again when we put her in the crib.  One thing that worked for us was to sit on our knees next to the crib and sort of hug her arms while she was standing up in the crib.  Then she eventually got tired of standing up and laid down and went to sleep.  It helped for her to already be in the crib at that point rather than us trying to transfer her.

Interesting! I'm going to try this tonight. Thanks!

DS has always been super punctual with his nap. 11:30 on the dot, he has his milk as I rock him & he's asleep by the time he's done with bottle. Now for the last few days he doesn't go down at all, he will drink his milk as usual but then wants to play & run around...and it's waaaay past 11:30. More like 2pm. I give up !
  • DD is doing this all the time too. last week was terrible this one hasn't been as bad but still no where close to our perfect sleeper we once had. I normally keep laying DD down and rubbing her back or belly until she finally gives in or I lay on the floor with my hand in the crib so she can lay her head on it.
I totally think its separation anxiety and maybe nightmares too. It is just soo hard and when I have DH goes up he always gives in and picks her up and lays in the twin bed in her room. Most of the time this is the only way we can get her to go back down..
