Yes, a question about pee

Just curious: how often have you had your urine tested at your appointments by your OB or midwife?  I have read conflicting information about what to expect at your appointment.  Personally, I've only been asked to once at my very first appointment and then when I went in yesterday to test for a suspected UTI (which was positive... boooo).  Should I anticipate more peeing in a cup in my upcoming appointments? Thanks, ladies!

Re: Yes, a question about pee

  • I have to pee in a cup every appointment. They check it for protein I believe.

  • My previous doctor's office, before I moved overseas, took a sample at each visit.  Here they only took one at my very first visit.  I actually asked about it at yesterday's appointment and was told that it was unnecessary.  In my opinion I was receiving MUCH better care at the first office.

  • They test me at every appointment.

  • I test at every appointment but my OB says it doesn't really matter until the end, when they are primarily checking for protein in your urine to signal pre-e. I would ask them about it at your next appointment though.

  • Thank you for your responses!!  I always thought something was amiss that they never took another sample again, especially now that I have a UTI that probably would have been caught at my last appointment.

  • Nope, they did a urine screen for protein once recently when my BP was elevated but otherwise just at my 1st OB.
  • Same as the rest. Except the appt i had the day with my GD test, i couldn't leave a sample.

  • Same here, every appointment. I don't think they are checking for UTIs so much as protein in urine or other pregnancy related issues.

I also have to pee in a cup every time but like PPs have said it's to check more for protein levels as a sign for pre-eclampsia. It's a different test for UTI so my doctors office only runs that one on the urine sample if you ask them to.
    Good to know! Thanks!

  • I do at every appointment!
  • With my first I had to give a sample maybe 3 times. This time, because I am having other symptoms they are testing every appointment.

  • I haven't had to until my last apt (whith the exception of once early in pregnancy). I was 30w6d at my last apt. The doc said I should give a sample before every apt here on out.

  • I also only have had to pee in a cup once at my first appointment. I didn't realize this was so uncommon

First appointment, then none for a while, then they started again at 28 weeks. BP is every appointment.

ETA: Quick Google Scholar search reveals that the benefits of checking at every visit are hotly in dispute. Seems there is no evidence it's helpful in actually diagnosing pre-e ---- BP and other labs are more helpful. But providers do it anyway, 'cuz that's how they were trained. And everyone is arguing about it. Which is pretty much par for the course in medicine-land!

I tried to link a bunch of the articles I found then TB ate my post so I give up. But you too can Google Scholar!

  • I am a dourk and kept digging. Even ACOG says that checking the urine for protein isn't useful. Oh, I love my profession.....

"Screening to predict preeclampsia beyond taking an appropriate medical history to evaluate for risk factors is not recommended."

  • They check my pee every time.  At first I didn't know this so for my 2nd or 3rd appointment I told the lady I needed to pee, she took my weight and let me go.... and I didn't leave any on the designated shelf.  She was like... "uh.... did you bring it somewhere??"  I'm a FTM so I had no clue.

I am giggling about the places that make you bring in your first morning pee lol... makes me picture women walking into a doctor's office and giving nods to fellow pregos because they know they're in the clique on account of the pee cup haha
  • First few appointments again at 26 weeks. Finally I asked because I'm not going to drink like a fish to pee on demand if it's not going to be collected. My practice sides with it is not needed at every appointment and really the amount of people with issues also had other issues that would lead them to know if they needed a sample. It wasn't worth the extra expense of checking everyone when most test came back just fine. I'm ok with this. I feel like I go to a practice who are fairly with it and progressive practicinors.
