When is too early for a baby shower?

Just wondering when people typically start having showers? I think mine are planned for about 4-5 weeks before my due date. But I just got an invite to a baby shower for my cousin on Feb. 8, and she will be about 17/18 weeks pg at that time. I just thought that seemed a little early, or is that not uncommon?

Unless another family member plans something before it, my first shower will be on 3/8. I'll be 32 weeks and my hostess will be 35 weeks (hence the early-ness) 17/18 weeks does seem pretty early to me. Is she out of town or something that would make other dates hard to work with?

This. For my first, I was 30ish weeks if I remember correctly. However, I live a 12 hour drive away from family and if they had thrown me a shower, it would've been when I was only around 14 weeks when I was in the locality.

  • 17 wks does seem early. I think I was 27 wks or so when I had mine. I was showing, so it didn't feel weird and I knew the sex of the baby so it made it easier for people to buy things. I wouldnt want to go past about 36 wks because then baby could end up being born before the shower.

  • I think that's pretty early.  There must have been a specific reason for it.

  • Yeah 17 weeks is definitely early. Too early IMO. Mine will be 31-34 weeks. Wouldn't want them any later than that though in case LO decides to come early.
  • I thought it seemed early too, but then I felt like kind of a b*tch for feeling that way. I originally thought it was because she lives out of state and would need to fly back for it, so she needed to do it sooner rather than later. But the invite was sent inviting us to her home out of state. It literally sounds like she just wanted to have her shower now. My mom just texted me that my cousin went to an elective u/s place to find out the gender just for this shower. I warned that it could be wrong since she's still really early.
But in general, it's ultimately none of my business. Like @lica001 I just worry about something going wrong when you do things so early.

  • On the flip side of things, when is too late to have a shower? I know "late" showers run the risk of baby already having made his/her arrival...Do you all think a late March-early April shower for a May 19th due date is okay?? My Aunt doesn't want to have it any earlier because we run the risk of snowy/icy weather before that...

Yes - I think early April for a mid-May baby is just about perfect timing for a shower. Early May would be pushing pretty late. My sister did hers one month before her due date and that's the latest I would do it.

  • Too early would be before the pee dries. It's hard to tell why she may be having one so early, it could be that the hostess won't be available closer to her EDD or she may be worried about bed rest later on.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • My shower is being hosted by my cousin and it's going to be mid April.
  • Mine will be the second Saturday in March and I'm due May 4th
  • Mine was about 6 weeks before I was due, and my shower from my coworkers was about 3 weeks before.  I think anything after 20 weeks is acceptable, but third trimester really makes the most sense.  17 weeks is strange.

  • I would say too early is anything before viability--no way would I be comfortable with that!

  • My shower was at 33 weeks last time.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with something before 24 weeks (viability week)

  • My shower was at 34 weeks last time, and I delivered on that day, so my shower had to be canceled. We had to stay in the hospital, so we never rescheduled. I am having this one earlier just in case.
  • Mine will be a little early, but I'm having twins and I have a history of preterm labor so that's why. I'm still waiting until 27-28 weeks to have it though as that's when they'll have a very good chance of survival. I definitely wouldn't have it any earlier because I can't imagine being in the position of having to return things if something happened. I'm just now getting to the point that going into the room that would have been Elliott and Ryland's and will now be Caroline and Oliver's isn't devastating.

  • I would think 30+weeks is the norm where I'm from.. I had 2 showers with my first one when I was 34 weeks and one when I was supposed to be 39 weeks but baby came 5 days prior which was fine because we got the meet and greet out of the way all at once...

  • When is too early?  Next weekend when mine is.   :|  I will only be 23w, and I feel pretty weird about having it so early, but my MIL scheduled it and I felt like I couldn't really tell her no since it is the only time DH's grandma will be able to come (she is in town for a few weeks right now).  I guess at least I'm showing and know the sex...  Oh well.

  • I will be 24 weeks at mine. I am expecting twins and am already having way to many blood pressure issues! My sister didn't want me to end up on bed rest or have the babies and not have everything in order. If it's wasn't for these circumstances we would have waited till at least 32- 34 weeks.
  • Mine is scheduled for 3/15. Both of my other kids were early plus DDs birthday is horribly close to my due date so we are doing her party early as well just to be on the safe side. They are always typically done around 32 to 34 weeks around here anyway though.

We'll be celebrating the same day! My mom picked the exact date, but I requested sometime in March. I will be 31 weeks.

  • I had a distant cousin go into labor the day after her shower and she was so uncomfortable during the shower. I felt so bad for her. She had the baby early by two weeks, but that's why I refuse to do it in may.

I would like to enjoy my day so I refused to let it be in May. My due date is may 21st and they are planning it for the first weekend in April. I feel like that gives me plenty of time.
  • 17/18 weeks is early. My mom just started to talk to me about it this week. It's going to be held on March 29th (I much prefer Saturday showers) and I am due on May 17 per the dr. So about 7 weeks ahead of schedule. Which to me is fine. I would rather have it and get it all ready for the baby's arrival, even if she is early.

  • I think that's really early. Mine is April 12 (Due May 22). I'll be 34 weeks, and that week worked best for my cousin who's flying in from AZ for the big day :)

@kramja01 I think that's OK. My mom's side is throwing me one March 22 and my mother-in-law is doing one April 12.  I thought the April date was cutting it close for me but it's what works for her so I'm rolling with it.

    I'm due May 8.
  • I'm having a shower at 29 weeks with my family back home. I lives 1000 miles away and will be flying home, so we didn't want to push it at all. My coworkers are throwing me a second shower late March.
  • I think any time once you're in your 3rd trimester would not warrant a side eye from me at all. Being due in May, and our area as April school vacations at different times (some people take trips, some school groups take trips), I think my sisters are planning for sometime in March for mine. I'd be in the 32 week range, give or take. As my sisters told me they took into consideration, this time frame will give me time to finish setting up, make any exchanges needed, complete my purchases, and still have time for an early arrival if that were to happen.

I agree that 17 weeks is just way too early, and from what you've said it sounds to me like this person is just anxious to have her shower which just sounds greedy and gift grabby to me. Unless she's leaving the country right after that and not coming back until well after the baby is born, I can't imagine schedules are that conflicted for so many months that it can 'only' be held when she's 17 weeks.

I was about 28 weeks for mine and felt that it was a little early but my mom didn't want it in between thanksgiving and Christmas, and was afraid I'd be too uncomfortable by the time schedules freed up in mid january, plus snow is really unpredictable. My son was born Feb. 1st.. if i had been due any later than that she probably would have waited a bit to avoid having it before 3rd tri
  • 17 weeks is super early I'd say. I'm hoping to have mine mid March for a May 8 due date.
  • 17/18 weeks seems super early... My friends & family are throwing me a big shower at just shy of 27 weeks, which would also normally be considered really early, but we're expecting twins. We've been told to have everything prepared and ready for their arrival by the time I'm 30 weeks. We don't anticipate them coming that soon (the goal is to try and make it to 37/38), but there's no telling if/when I'll end up on bedrest.

My SIL went into labor 6 weeks early with my nephew. They had very few things ready, and had actually attended their baby shower from my mom the day before SIL was admitted to the hospital, so they still had presents in their packages around their house. This has put the fear in me that I need to be ready by the end of April at the latest in order to feel comfortable. (I'm due May 27.)  I also would like to be able to still move at the time of my shower, so my friend will be throwing it in March.
  • My friend is throwing mine March 2nd, which I think may be a little early (due May 5) but it works with everyone's schedules. I think 17 weeks is way early, especially since an A/S hasn't usually been done at that time.
  • Mine is planned for march 16th and I'm due may 7th...gives me a good 6 weeks before my due date to organize everything/return any doubles etc :)
