UO

Can't believe no one has started this yet. So I'll go.

I've been thinking a lot about safety and trying to keep our babies safe this week, in part because of the vacc discussion earlier. My UO is, I think we have allowed ourselves to fall under the sway of too much fearmongering, panic-inducing media reports and the like, and we are letting our kids do less and less, all in the name of safety. I'm not advocating being a reckless idiot, but I think at some point you have to accept that your child can never be perfectly 100% safe.

When I was a kid (and dinosuars roamed the Earth), I could move around the neighborhood (say, 1/2 a mile or so) pretty freely and go play. The only rules were that I had to say where I was going and when I would be back when I left the house. Kids don't seem to get much free play any more, and I think that is a shame.

We must be the same age.  ;-)  I also grew up in a quiet suburban neighborhood where everybody had kids, we all knew each other, nobody had fences unless they had a dog and even then it was just chain link, and we all treated each others houses and yards like they were our own... we would play huge group night games every night until the sun went down, playing capture the flag throughout the whole neighborhood, etc.  On Saturday mornings we'd take off on our bikes and not come back until lunch, and then not again until dinner.  It makes me sad that kids don't really do this anymore (and often for good reason) -- it taught us independence, athletics, creativity, and how to entertain ourselves and be responsible... and how to NOT sit on our asses watching TV / playing video games nonstop.

We live in a neighborhood where I can actually see this happening to a certain extent, but I think it is rare.

I hate Starbucks.  I think they practically burn their coffee, and they don't have a good light roast option (their light roast is even really dark).

I think it is silly and rude when people who plan to EBF think somebody is "forcing" them not to or questioning their abilities when they suggest you have a can of formula on hand after LO's birth.  You can't always plan everything -- I had to be rushed to the ER for CT and MRI the same day I came home from the hospital with LO, because of a severe migraine that they thought was a stroke or burst aneurysm (it wasn't)... that can of formula really saved our asses during a terrifying and stressful time.  And the next morning I went right back to nursing and continued to BF successfully for months.  Even if you never have to use that can of formula (and hopefully you won't!), it bugs me when people assume that doctors are being negative or anti-BF just because they hand you a can of (free) formula and say "in case you need it."

When I hear people joke about how there is going to be a baby conceived after a night of boozing it up I sometimes cringe inside. If I (or DH) is sloppy drunk, the last thing I want to do is try and hook up!!!! I'd much rather just pass out!

I feel like this had a time and place for me / us... and that time and place has DEFINITELY passed.  I don't even like sharing a bed with DH when he's drunk, he's a boozy mouth-breather who wants to snuggle me so close that I nearly suffocate and get a contact drunk.  Ha.

Are we married to the same man!?!?!??! Mine also then gets pissed in his drunken stooper that I don't want to snuggle. I think these feelings all escalated for me when I was pregnant. Nine months being sober changes your outlook a lot.

My friend is of this camp.  She walks her seven year old across the street to the bus stop. I mean across the street from her house. That's asinine to me.  She won't even let him use the men's bathroom alone.  When I was seven I was responsible for setting my own alarm clock, waking up and getting out of the house and to the bus at the right time.  It sets them up for failure when they go to school and are expected to be "independent thinkers".

People are seriously like that? When I was pregnant I signed up for free samples of whatever I could get my hands on, just in case. I didn't end up needing any of it until a couple weeks ago but I'm glad I had them around. I have several unopened, full size cans of formula I got for free. If nothing else, I can give them away. People can be so silly.

Normally I would agree, but I have a former student who is competing on the women's snowboarding team so I'm excited to see her compete!
That's what my husband always says!  But I love figure skating and skiing and ski-jumping... in the summer i like diving and gymnastics and swimming... so I like both seasons!

I used to be a figure skater /skiier though, so maybe that is why I like it so much.

There have been a lot of people in the news lately who are on life support--pregnant woman and young girl. I think the families should (be allowed in one case) to say their good byes and let these people go. I would not want to "live" that way. I don't know anyone who would. I don't imagine it would be easy, but I think it would be best.

This has been all over our news (it's like 30 minutes from me) https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/01/08/newser-pregnant-life-support/4370971/ And I admit I haven't read much on it - but I think it's crazy that they're forced to keep her alive/on life support for the fetus when if she was alive alive and wanted to abort it she could. Just seems so double-standardy to me.

  • Pretty sure I need my flame-retardant suit on for this one...

I just do not get why people get falling-down drunk after their college years. I get that it's a phase in college and kids are experimenting and learning. Once people are older, have kids, etc., it doesn't make sense to me anymore. It seems like a waste of money and a waste of the next morning with a huge headache. For many people I know, drinking too much is their excuse for otherwise unacceptable behavior, too.

However, I'm the person who throws up at three drinks, so maybe I just have a different perspective. I've only been legitimately drunk twice in my life; once when I was 14 (oops), and once when I turned 21.
    :-/
Well, I know the times that I've done that post college (and there have been MANY of them!) usually I didn't go out with the intent of getting hammered, i just got carried away having fun, it didn't hit me right away, and then by the time I was "buzzed" I was actually hammered.  Ihave to pretty consciously tell myself to drink slowly and sparingly, otherwise I just guzzle mindlessly (not with an intent to get drunk, just cuz I drink fast!), and then I'm accidentally plowed.

I don't think i ever, as an adult, have really said "I really want to get hammered tonight!" It's almost like an accident. :-)

I have a friend/coworker who would say the same thing - but it happens at every after-hours work event we have. She says things she shouldn't say to our bosses and talks people's ears off for hours, then feels dumb about it later - but never changes her drinking habits.

That's where people can be misinformed about cleanses. I started a cleanse this week ( the stomach flu/sinus and ear infections derailed it) but the purpose of it was to literally cleanse my body. I understand some people do it to lose weight but that's not why people who actually understand juicing do it. I use it to detoxify my body as well as jump start it for a new eating regimen (ie not eating like shit anymore from the holidays) so my body can properly digest my 'clean' foods and I get the most benefit and nutrients from eating them.

Ok - that's just different, and irresponsible behavior.

I have a friend like that - she can't handle her liquor. She's always bombed if she drinks and is sloppy, falling down annoying. I actually have two friends like that, and several co-workers.

I however, will go out and tie one on on occasion and yes, it is usually planed. Gasp ;)

IT's a rarety and even more so now that I have a kid, but I admit - I am a drinker and to me a free night out (no child) typically goes hand in hand with a whole bunch of drinks. That being said I make a REALLY cognisant effort to not get sloppy and act like an idiot, and most times I prevail.

I think getting hammered is fun sometimes...not like fall down, stumbling, puking drunk....that sucks. But a fun night out with friends doing shots and dancing, or a summertime Saturday day-buzz after bar hopping with my husband (pre-baby), or a boozy, talk until the wee hours girls weekend? Hells yeah...sign me up. It happens rarely, I drink my water, and take some ibuprofen before bed. Big whoop.

I am going to have a girls trip to Chicago sometime this summer with college friends. So excited to be able to be buzzed and not worry about nursing!

I LOVE this response. I do agree though. At this point I only get hammered accidently but it still happens from time to time. Not often by any stretch, but it does. Don't judge me for having "one last drink" that takes me from buzzed to drunkedy drunk.

I have only once in my life got so drunk I probably was close to needing medical care (my throat was too numb to force myself to throw up).. I was 23, before that I never got drunk enough to really impair my judgement or abilities because I hate not having control over my own body. (I mean hate) After that event, I only drink once in a while.

I don't have an UO either, but I'll respond to this. I wonder if your bolded statement is actually true or is this a result of the media/facebook/twitter/amber alert system. I feel the same way, but then I think about when we were kids and we didn't have the media outlets like today to inform us of all the kidnapping and crimes. Maybe we had a false sense of safety?

JBDamonM I think drunk sex can be fun if you’re both tipsy and not completely trashed, although I won’t be having any for the next 7 months.

I have no facts to back up my opinion. I don't know if there are more/ less of the crazies lurking around and your observation may have some validity. There just wasn't the stage for reporting these things on the scale that we have now. It was easier to hide in the dark.

  • Not a fan of fake nails.  The thought of my fingernails suffocating underneath a sheet of acrylic doesn't set well with me.

Sorry...I've worn fake nails for almost 12 years. Don't have any plans of stopping...ever! I love them!

  • As for the people are overly protective now days, I agree to some extent. The reason why you do not see a lot of kids playing outside anymore is because there are more sick people out there who will harm a child. I've said this before, that our society has gone down the drain so much.. and you can see it in plain sight when you see how many kids are abducted vs in the 60s/70s/80s.

I do remember playing outside all the time as well (we were made to), but that was in Napa.. a small community where the only murder that happened since living there was when I was 18. When I lived in cities such as Fresno and Sacramento as a kid, I could never play outside alone. Luckily here in WV, the one street leading into this place is about a mile long and you can see and hear for a long ways before they are close. Also, we have over 300 acres. So he should be free to roam around the farm part. (The wooded parts may have bears).

Sorry?  To each their own!  Rock your fake nails.  They just aren't for me.
I wore them for years too.  Loved the way they look; hated the upkeep, the cost, and the fact that they completely DESTROYED my nails.  But I'm a gel / shellac manicure addict now and my nails have never looked better.

I disagree, I do not think that society and human nature has changed that much (and that there are more sickos out there now), I think it is the media obsessed world we live in that we just see so much more if it and so we think the world is more dangerous.

There have always been pedophiles, etc.

This! Before the internet, only major new stories from other cities would make headlines on the TV/newspaper, but now you can google anything and find an article posted from a town of 100 people to a city with 10 million people from all over the world. The harm and danger has always been there, we are just more aware of it now.

I have to comment on the topic of not letting kids run freely now a days. Yes the world has always been bad but I do think now is not the same as before. You can not let your kids run freely out there and not worry. I know as a parent we always worry but no Jasmine will not be allowed to just go outside and ride her bike unsupervised. And I guess when you have been exposed to how bad things can get your view on the world changes. (Takes a deep breath) When I was 6 I was out and about riding my bike in my neighborhood with 3 of my friends. Just right there in front of my house. That day forever changed my life and my families life I was sexually molested by my friends dad. I did not tell my mom because I was scared, she found out 3 days later when I was scared of that man and just cried when seeing him. My life was never the same or my mom's. She became protective. I was never allowed again to go to a friends house to play like I said because until it does not happen to you,you just don't know. And because I do not want that to happen to my daughter I will always keep a close eye on her. Sorry this is so long.
