Re: UO

  • I really don't care whether or not Chris Christie was actually involved in this traffic scandal or not. I think he's a big, fat jerk either way.

Not sure if that's unpopular or not, haha. It's just on my mind this morning.

Oh yeah, and I hate how dead it is around here lately.

I understand why it is, but I don't like it. But then again, I'm a guilty party too. I've been feeling like garbage this week and spend a lot of time in bed staring at the wall.

Oh yeah, and is anyone else not seeing siggy and/or avatar pics today? Or is that just me?

ETA: I guess it's just avatars.

I'm with you on it being quiet... I was counting on you ladies to help my mat leave time pass while I wait for LO!! I know LO needs to cook longer, but I am definitely envious of all the outside babies!

I suppose I should do my part, and come up with an UO; I will ponder that!

Also, no avatar pics here either... Everyone is a wedding ring currently...

Agreed. It just makes me hungry and wish I wasn't staring at a picture of a delicious dessert that I can't eat.

I don't care either. I don't actually dislike him per se, but I really hope that he doesn't end up running for President because I feel like he actually has a chance at winning. He is not the type of person who should be representing the United States. There is a fine line between straight talk and stupidity. That, and I'm not a Republican anyway.

  • Thanks, @PreDempsey. Maybe I will see if my husband wants to drive me out there on Saturday. :)

I love that shopping center out there, by the way. Joann's, Barnes and Noble, Target, Kohl's, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, Bed Bath & Beyond...  and then the Hobby Lobby across the street. It just has a lot of good stuff and it makes me happy.
  • @KaitiMac - I totally agree with your UO. I think it's so silly. It also seems like so many are convinced they'll go early and almost obsessed with it, freaking out when they hit 38 weeks. Hello-- you're not even DUE yet.

My UO is that I don't like other people's kids much since having my own. I used to be more of a kid/baby person than I am now. Now I use all my patience up on my own (plus he's cuter anyway ;). Taking DS to an indoor playground and I find there are a lot of kids whose parents are basically ignore them there. I'm sure it's harder with 2(+) but it's pretty clear some parents are not paying any attention at all (like when a 4-5 year old tried to push my 2 year old over for no reason last week).

  • We all know pineapple, cookies, chicken parm, or whatever else isn't going to send anyone into labor.  So my UO is I don't understand why people feel the need to get on a soap box about "term" because someone wants to eat a cookie.  If they were talking medical induction (or even things like cator oil), fine.  But is some fresh fruit or a cup of tea really going to do anything if baby isn't ready?  Nope.  So what's the harm?  Just let people indulge in the OWT for "fun".

@peanutmuse - I agree, it's totally dead around here and it's super boring. I really miss all of our other regulars who've had babies already. Also, all of the avatars are wedding rings now. Sigh.

My UO: Ladies should stop trying OWTs to stimulate labor when their only at 37-38 weeks. I understand third tri is uncomfortable and seeing a bunch of outside babies is really tempting, but the amount of development that happens in the last few weeks is too critical for people to be actively trying to induce labor (unless the doctor says you need to be induced). Just wait until you're 39 weeks and then start gorging yourself with pineapple, or whatever it is you think is going to help move things along.

I'm also a super cranky pants today.
This one is pissing me off royally today, too.  I am so over people trying to have their babies early for selfish reasons--especially when they deny and say they aren't trying to do that, but all they talk about is early induction methods.

  • This may have been said before, but I find it incredibly ridiculous when people say they are going to sterilize the bottles EVERY TIME after being used. I will definitely be washing them every time, but sterilizing also? Overkill. How did babies survive without sterilized bottles??!

I don't think people are aware the amount of germs that are in the air we breathe, on our phones, and on our skin. You cannot keep your child away from EVERY single germ.

  • @mrsjenni, I totally agree. I started a thread yesterday that I had only a slight amount of interest in, just so it would break up the L&D monotony. And I mentioned before, I skim the labor stories and really just look at the pictures. I think that was my FFFC last week.

@PBP2002 -- yes, we all know that those stupid things don't work. But so what? Dealing with the people trying all of the stupid things is annoying. And whether they are trying some stupid OWT or something more serious, the goal is still the same, isn't it?

I can give you that the posts can get annoying.  But I don't think anyone who is eating pineapple is THAT serious about trying to get their baby out at 38 weeks or they would be using proven means (like medical induction) to get the baby out.  Do I like pineapple?  Yup.  Might being 38-39 weeks and the OWT about it inducing labor be enough for me to grab one at the grocery store?  Maybe.  If it works, fine.  If not, I got some yummy fruit out of the deal!

(Just to clarify - I'm not buying a pineapple.  I'm just saying, I can see where being 38+ weeks might make you want to try eating/drinking things you might normally eat/drink anyway on the off chance it actually "works".)

  • I also agree with @mrsjenni - it is getting monotonous to see all these L&D/Birth story posts.  I am excited for all of them and try to post, but I feel like I am posting the same thing 20xs per day and it doesn't mean anything anymore.

I also have a hard time picking out the drive bys - I know a lot of the regular screen names by sight but some are less common to me (but still people who have been active on the board).  I have decided to just post a congrats for everyone because it is too much effort to look at peoples post history before responding.  This will be even harder now with everyone avatar the same... Hoping that gets fixed soon

It's less of what they're doing and more of WHY they're doing it that bothers me. I've been eating pineapple throughout my pregnancy because it's yummy and healthy, not bc it's going to induce me early. But broadcasting all over TB that you're trying OWTs at 37 weeks really grinds my gears, whether it's a "labor cookie" or castor oil. It's just stupid.
Exactly--it's for selfish reasons and that's the part that bothers me; they are making it about them and what they want, not what's good for the baby.  "I'm getting so big!  I want this baby early so I don't get bigger!"  "I'm jealous of all the outside babies! I hope this baby comes early!" "I don't want a February baby, so I'm going to try everything I can to have a January baby!"  "I'm going to schedule an c-section, because I have this event and I don't want birth getting in the way!"    It makes me wish they go past their due dates.

  • Hoping this is not an unpopular opinion but I was really disappointed by the doctor I saw yesterday.  I was talking to her about my vomiting - got better with the Reglan and then started going downhill again (vomited 3 times on Tuesday despite taking med 4 times that day as rxed).  Her only solution was "well if you are not hungry dont eat.  It wont hurt the baby, only you a little and you have so little time left.  If you are still struggling next week we can talk about induction because you will be 39 weeks by then"  Umm.... really not the response I was expecting from a DOCTOR!  thanks but no thanks.

  • Totally agree about the OWTs.

I also think it's ridiculous to say that your doctor will or won't let you do something. If your doctor recommends something for your and/or your LO's best interests and you agree, that's great. I just think that using the phrase my OB won't "let me" makes it sound like you haven't done any research of your own and are blindly following their advice.

  • Last week I was so sure I was ready for this baby to come out (I also was one of the annoying people talking about OWTs) but now I'm scared we're not ready and would be happy if LO decided to hold off for as long as he wants (safely). Even if I do feel nauseous and sick every night.

  • Totally agree with @peanutmuse, @mrsjenni and others about the L&D announcements.  I didn't really think about this before, but frankly it seems pretty unnecessary to let everyone know you are in labor, and it would be easier to just post when you are able that you had the baby.  I doubt anyone would really notice if most of the posters were missing for a day or two around here, and I would much rather read the birth stories anyway.

I'm going to jump on this bandwagon and agree here. I've been to L&D 3 times now but I didn't post that I was going there any of the times. I just didn't feel like there was a point to it. Either I'd have the baby early and have to deal with whatever came along with that, or I'd get sent home in a couple of hours (which, thankfully, is what happened each time).

  • I'm seriously considering having @dempseyjosh do my labor updates mostly because I think it would be hilarious read after everything is done and I hope he's genuinely shitting his pants and you all can tell. But I'm only doing the L&D post under two circumstances: 1. it's real rip roaring labor and 2. he can promise that it'll be entertaining.

Not that you can tell, but I love it this !

Agreed. I think I did that initially with my first, but as time wore on you realize where you can and should cut corners. Sterilizing the bottles and the pumping equipment and the pacifiers at the drop of a hat is one of those things.

This is my unpopular opinion. I hate when people use the line "how did children survive before we had"... car seats, certain toys, certain foods. What ever. The reality is lots of kids didn't survive. Don't judge a mom for being cautious. ... let her make her own choices for her family. I know exactly how many germs there are. I am a microbiologist and this knowledge would lead me to sterilize every. single. time. for an infant until they had a better immune system. If you don't want to follow the same precautions I do I promise not to judge you. Deal?

Interesting, the reason I feel this way is due to the microbiology and other science classes I have taken.

I'm not judging anyone. I'm just saying that I believe it is a colossal waste of time and unnecessary. It doesn't make them a bad parent by any means.

I don't completely disagree with you (I'm a quasi-germaphobe myself) but on the flip side, over-sterilizing everything is one of the main theories as to why there are more childhood allergies, as the kids are unable to build up their own immune system to fight germs. So, who really knows.  I'm on the side of sterilizing everything the first time, and then only when necessary after that.
