1st Trimester

bleeding/spotting.....whatever you want to call it, its freaking me out

This is my second pregnancy.  My first pregnancy was normal and I didn't have any problems.  I am 6 weeks pregnant and bleeding/spotting.  I noticed it first last Saturday.  It was only 1-2 times that day and only when I would wipe after using the restroom.  It happened off and on for the next few days and the blood was always a brownish color.  Tuesday, I noticed a little more blood and it was appearing more frequently and the color changed to a pale pinkish/brown color.  So, of course I panicked and called my doctor on Wednesday morning.  Luckily they were able to take me right away.  I went in for an ultrasound and the saw the baby and the heartbeat and said that all of the measurements were matching up with the dates, etc.  After the ultrasound I visited with my obgyn and she said that everything looked good and seemed normal and that it was probably old blood.  So I assumed that since I had a transvaginal ultrasound AND an internal examine yesterday that I would have some bleeding.  Well I have had a lot and I am hoping that nothing more serious is going on.  Its still brown in color but I have had to use 2 pads since yesterday evening.  Any thoughts or experience with this?

  • I just posted last night that I am also 6 weeks and spotting brown blood but with some cramping. I'm trying not to freak out too much but was pretty devastated when I wiped once with dark red earlier this morning. I'm going to the dr's this morning for labs but from what I've read it's common at this point. If you've been checked out and told you're ok then I would just take it easy and drink water. Did you call back and tell them you went through two pads worth?

  • I am also 6 weeks and have been spotting since Fri. It has been mostly brown but have had some red too. I haven't gotten any on my pad- just when I wipe. I FREAKING hate it. I am so over the anxiety. To make matters worse I went in on Mon and they did an US and didn't see a HB. I was just 6 weeks that day so they weren't concerned and have me coming back on Mon for another one. I am just a huge ball of nerves at this point. I cant concentrate on anything else.

poptart109,I haven't called my doctor back yet because they told me there would be some bleeding so I was planning on monitoring it today and if it doesn't get any better or gets worse, I will call first thing tomorrow morning.  I don't want to be the crazy annoying pregnant lady that calls ever day, but I will if necessary!

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one though and that its common

  • Good luck everybody! I'm also wondering if my hypothyroidism is messing with me too- my TSH is 3.82 but since I have hashimoto's they want it at 1.0. It aggravates me that they've had my labs for a week but haven't adjusted my meds.
  • It's totally normal ladies, don't stress yourselves out about it.  I had a ton of spotting throughout my first pregnancy and off and on with my twins now.  As long as it's not bright red, heavy enough to fill a pad and alongside cramping you're okay.  I know it makes you anxious, even having been through it before I hate when I see that brownish color after I go to the bathroom, it's not a bad thing though.  Your cervix is super sensitive so exercise, sexual activities or even just peeing can make you spot.

  • Its definitely slowed down throughout the day so I'm thinking is was only due to the transvaginal ultrasound and internal exam.

  • My slowed as well- dr says all is well and most likely an irritated cervix from sex :/
  • Glad to hear all is well! Good luck!

  • I had spotting/bleeding that began at 6w2d, started brown but turned dark red by dinner time. Thought the worst of course since my first pregnancy had nothing like this. I had a transvaginal ultrasound in the ER (@6w3d) and found a baby with heartbeat but also a sub chorionic hematoma that was causing the bleeding. I've had 2 more u/s since (one @8w3d and last one was NT scan @12w5d) and my baby is growing right on schedule and my bleed is getting smaller all the time. I was put on reduced activity (nothing strenuous), lots of rest, and pelvic rest by my doc after the SCH was found and I only getting spotting very rarely now. My reason for telling you ladies this: bleeding can be "normal" and it can turn out to be ok. I hope you ladies get good news soon, prayers for you all.
