Real Cups

The past week or so DD has been super interested in my and DH's cups, you know, the ones without lids!  We really don't have any "real" lidless cups for her yet.  But I managed to find a smaller plastic cup DH's got free from work as a promotion.  She does ok with it.  Not great.  But ok.

I really need to get her some of her own!  She currently uses the Playtex Little Grippers.  See picture below.  I've liked them so far becasue they are for the most part spill proof.  And I like that the lids are interchangable (spout, straw, and spountless cup).  She currently uses the spout for water and the straw for milk.  No reason for the distintion, that's just what I did when I started introducing WCM.  I haven't got anty of the spoutless ones yet.

Anyway ...

Is anyone's LOs showing interest in lidless cups yet?  Debating if I should get a few of the spouless lids for her cups (they look like lids for travel coffee cups).  Or if I should get a pack of cheap plastic lidless cups for her to practice with?  I also vagely remember folks talking about a lidless cup that was angled so it made drinking easier (since they could see the fluid).  But I can't remember what it was called?

Re: Real Cups

  • DS uses the OXO straw cup and I saw these, which I think we would move onto next.  He likes to drink out of our cups, but tips it way too much so this would help to control it.  Plus you can remove that cover and use it as a regular cup when they get the hang of it.

  • Oh my, yes yes. For a while now. She gets so excited when I give her one! I was thinking this weekend of buy a few for her - right now she's using a set of Medela breast milk storage cups I never used :p

We're only giving her water because of spill reasons - she still finds it gleeful to get her fingers in there or to just up end her cup for the hell of it. I think if I sat with her with some juice, she might be more vigilant since she's a juice-a-holic.

  • I honestly would just buy some cheap small plastic cups. Let her play with it and put a small amount of liquid for practice. This is a skill that will just happen naturally as they get older. Certainly nothing wrong with any of the specialty cups though.

  • We have a set of the cheap ones from IKEA. Sometimes I give her just a little water in it and she'll drink it, if I give her too much it ends up down her shirt and on the floor. At my paren'ts house last week she discovered dixie cups and kept going back to the water spout in their fridge and demanding water.

She can pretty much drink from them, but for juice and any drink I let her walk away with she still uses straw cups

But honeslty I'm not sure if DD is too old for it?

  • DS drinks out of a straw cup and will also drink out of a regular cup-- but we have to be careful not to put too much in it or he'll spill it on himself and/or dump it on the floor. Echoing PPs to just get small, cheap plastic cups and don't put too much liquid in them at once.
  • I think any plastic cup with or without a lid is fine. DD drinks water out of our cups but she tries to tip it too much and chokes herself. Since it's still very much a constant supervision and assistance thing we haven't really considered getting new cups. She drink her milk from a straw cup.

  • She shows interest, but we don't allow her to drink out of them.  Too messy.  She has all manner of soft and hard straws and sippies.  She can begin using a cup when she is two or so.
  • she can use a cup without a lid but under total supervision. I can't just hand it to her and go.

she gets so excited and will dump it out all over her and the floor. for now I will let her take sips of water hand over hand- she loves it.
