Did you get a flu shot?

I'm specifically looking for research on the affects on a fetus. I know it's out there. Just having a hard time pining good studies down.
Edit: effects of the FLU on the fetus. Not the shot. Plenty of research showing the shot has no effect. Interesting on what the effects are on the fetus if the mother gets the flu.

You need to dial it down. We are talking about the FLU shot, not generally recommended vaccines. I believe somebody already mentioned there have not been studies on pregnant women.

And you need to get a freaking clue.
    A) The flu shot IS generally recommended. By every single credible medical authority.
    B) There are few studies on pregnant women for ANY drug.

I can't even deal with this level of ignorance.

We are not talking about any drug we are talking about the flu shot which, from research provided, has a different effectiveness each year because it is based on predictions. I predict I won't come down with the flu and thus am not getting the vaccine.

There was a 19yr old boy that recently died in my area. Not 24 hrs after getting the vaccine he got really sick and ended up in a coma. The family believes it was a reaction to the flu vaccine since he'd never had it before and the Drs couldn't agree on what killed him.

Distraught parents are not the most credible source of scientific info. Interesting that the people with actual training in that area don't seem to think it was the vaccine.

I have to agree with this. While tragic and terribly sad, making that kind of connection is dangerous. Just like the people who say their kids got autism from vaccines. I don't blame the parents for trying to make sense out of it, but these stories usually end up just scaring people without offering much actual data.

I didn't read the comments. I got a regular (with Thimerosal) flu shot at 6 weeks. I live in TX and there have been numerous deaths from the flu this year. I've never gotten one before, but since you are at higher risk when preggo, I got one. The vaccine is a dead virus which means it can not give you the flu. It does not affect the fetus at all as it does not pass through the placenta. Once your body creates antibodies the baby will benefit. People can get a mild fever after as a reaction, but not everyone does. If you are allergic, it's of course a different story. I will admit I was mad they gave me the regular one until I talked to my DR and she said the trace of mercury is different than the kind you get from fish, that's more harmful. In the end it's a personal choice. I did what I thought was best for me and baby and now that TX is seeing so many cases I'm glad I did get it. Here's hoping all of us stay healthy throughout our pregnancies, flu shot or not! :)
  • Yes got it before I knew I was pregnant but did get it with my last pregnancy as well. I work in an ER and have come into contact with several patients a day that are flu positive, I've had the flu once couldn't imagine having it while pregnant.

  • My sister died of the flu so I always get one. Got the egg free one for the first time and did great!!! Best ever. Normally I get sick from it but not this year.
  • No because I never do and haven't had the flu ever as an adult - knock on wood ;)  We generally vaccinate but I'm not impressed by the efficacy of the flu shot.
  • I normally turn down getting the flu shot, but, since I am now considered high risk...the Dr. recommended that I get the shot this time. Good decision on my part because everyone I know was getting the flu.
  • Yes. I get it every year because I am a teacher. Also, my dr told me to.
  • Even though I typically don't get the flu shot, I elected to have one with my last pregnancy and did so again with this one.  My doctor recommended it both times.

  • DH and I get ours every year because they are free through his stores'a pharmacy.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • It would feel wrong not to, why refuse something that could protect you and your baby? The flu can be very dangerous during pregnancy..
  • Didn't get one, I'm 30 & have never had one nor have I ever had the flu. People I know that got it got sick afterwards so I'd rather just stay away from sick people and keep my hands clean.
  • Unbelievable how many people think it's possible to get the flu from the flu shot. It's NOT possible- the shot is an inactivated ( aka dead) form of the flu. It takes two weeks to build immunity after you get the shot, so if you coincidentally get it within that time frame, it was just tough luck. Also, it does not protect against every strain out there, just the predicted worst ones.
  • Also, for those of you who are not getting the flu shot because you "never get the flu,"...
    1. Never say never
    2. Herd Immunity- this is not just about yourself. Please consider the sick, elderly, and the very young, especially if you live or work with them
  • I got the thermerasol free flu shot at the beginning of the flu season. I work in a health department so they really advocate people getting one especially children, elderly, and pregnant women. Plus they were offering it for free at our office so it was really convenient. I called my OB before hand to ask if I should and she said that she actually highly recommended it as long as it was the thermerasol free one. I never used to get the flu shot but decided to this time because I was so incredibly sick at the beginning of this year.
  • @joules235 Herd immunity is protecting those who cannot get the vaccination themselves. So yes, it applies to the flu as well

Not trying to convince anyone of anything, just educating
  • @joules235 The realistic goal is not to save the world or eradicate disease. But if there is anything I can do to help protect 1 tiny infant I live with, or in my case kids with cancer, yes I will gladly do that. But that is each persons choice.
  • That's what exactly what I said in my original post............
  • Interesting that you are shocked at "how many" women on here think the flu shot causes the flu. I just went through all five pages and did not find a single one. Two ppl said that for sick afterwards and one of then said it may have been mono. Others have discussed the side effects or reactions they had to the vaccine so I'm not sure what you are reading.

  • @joules235- "consider" is a choice

@eltrain5- I didn't mean in this thread.. I mean in general. I hear it all the time.

Yes- no reason not to IMO. Why are you on the fence about it?

And this was the "original" Post.

So I was one of those who opted out of the flu shot for multiple reasons. Now people are dying all over Oregon from the flu so I am starting to freak out a bit. From 12/28 to 1/6 at least 7 people have died and hundreds are hospitalized. Now I wonder if I should get one. I don't want to die! (I have never gotten a flu shot before and I have never had the flu, but you never know!)

ETA: Whoops. I didn't realize I was resurrecting a battle. Sorry, folks!
