I'm on Cloth Diaper Overload!!!!

I have been researching and reading old blogs about Cloth Diapers. My question is to the ladies who cloth diaper, What brand has been your favorite for your new born/ infant? That's all, just the brand you LOVE!

Re: I'm on Cloth Diaper Overload!!!!

  • Just one? :-S

  • Ummm I not only love different brands, but all different types.  Impossible to name just one.  For newbs if I could only do one thing I'd go with GMD workhorses fitteds and some covers.

  • I've started browsing the CD board, it's a lot to learn! I almost gave up on the idea, but after registering the other day I wanted to look into it again. It seems like such an intimidating project, and I am overwhelmed by the options that are out there! I've pretty much learned that I shouldn't plan on just one brand or type, as every baby is different and what fits a long skinny baby will not fit a shorter plump baby. So I'm going to start with a variety, whatever that variety might be.

If you haven't yet, definitely check out the Cloth Diapering board. It's full of info. I'm slowly working my way through it, but the time is worth is.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Newborn diaper: GMD workhorse fitted plus Thirsties aplix cover. I'm not super experienced with newborn diapering since we started late with DD (6w) but this combo is where it's at. Infant: Bumgenius 4.0s for at home and Elementals (old Elementals, I think you can get these again?) for out and about. Pockets are the easiest for removing peanut butter poo since you can remove the insert and then it doesn't absorb all the water while you spray it. Toddler: Nicki's Diapers bamboo prefolds and a Thirsties cover. This is my favorite combo ever right now. I would have said snaps on the cover a few months ago but the new Thirsties aplix is so boss, so aplix all the way. Just no aplix on BGs cuz they have the suck.

  • We have loved the one sized Rumparooz pocket diapers.  The double side gussets have been huge blow-out savers!  Also inserts made from hemp are amazing since they soak up so much!  If possible, go to a cloth diaper store and try some out or see if anyone you know uses CDs and would let you see some of theirs.
FYI - I just discovered that you can RENT newborn diapers.  Genius!!!  Especially since your babe will only be in them for a few months.

  • Bumgenius 4.0, I haven't really used cloth for my newborns, but I love my 4.0 one size BG.
I used gdiapers more with DS1, but they require to much adjusting and making sure they are on just right in order not to leak, plus with DS2 he was much chunkier and the gidapers didn't fit him pretty early on.

  • My sister uses grovia hybrid snap diapers. They have covers with removable inserts so you can have multiple changes of the diaper pads but use the same cover over again. They also fit from early infancy (not necessarily newborn depending on the size of your baby. You would have to use prefolds then) until they are potty trained. I will also be using this brand and they have some cute choices on amazon.
  • I didnt start CD until DS was 1 but I love my charlie bananas. For this DS I will be buying some alva baby CD I've heard good things and they are really affordable.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I'm new to this cloth diapering thing and have just started building my stash. I love ALL adorable diaper covers! And therefore want them all... :-)
  • The only thing we used on our newborn was Osocozy prefolds and covers (a mix of Thirsties and Econobum). I liked those a lot, but I'm convinced I'll like GMD Workhorses even better.

As she got older and we tried other diapers, my favorite combo for around the house was a Workhorse with a homemade fleece soaker. For out-and-about, DH liked Bum Genius 4.0's and I liked a prefold or flat, folded into a cover (mainly Econobum or Bummi's Super Whisper Wrap as she got bigger).

For nighttime our best solution was a fitted (Pooters at $16 each or Old School Cool at $27 each - yikes) under a fleece soaker or wool longies.

this is where the 'you're just going to have to try several" argument comes in.  For as many people that love g diapers, there are people who loath them with a passion.  I'm on team loath.  By all means try them because you may love them, but I would never recommend someone buy a whole stash of them.

  • I'm with @ABColeslaw and @busterbeagle about GMD fitteds for NBs.   I liked Kissaluv fitteds also.  Had some BG AIOs but sold them because they sucked.  For older kiddos it's more about personal preference.  I have all different kinds of pockets with a few AIOs.  If I had to pick one kind... I'd cry.  And probably pick BG 4.0s.
I have 10 BG NB AIOS I made some hemp doublers....should I give up and sell?  They are just for when my H has to change.  The rest of my NB stash is made up of 20 workhorses and 12 GMD prefolds.  I'm thinking the AIOs won't get that much use.  Still....should I sell?  My other nb AIOs are Imagine and Grovia (heard terrible things about this one after I bought it)

DD peed out of them so fast.  It was like a week that she could wear them between when her cord stump fell off and when she peed enough that they leaked every time.  Plus they took forever to dry.  They are cute though and easy.   Your kid might not pee out of them so fast, so they are worth a try.

We had a grovia that I sold also.  It leaked every single time she wore it, because it wicked outside the legs.  But it was cute :).
Yeah I honestly am not going to even prep the Grovia...I think I'll just fold and sell now because I haven't heard one good thing.  I have 6 BG that a friend gave me that she never used, her baby was massive.  She prepped them, so I might try those ones with my doublers to see if it works, if not, I will sell all of them and at least 4 will be brand new.  Honestly, if I sell I could just get another dozen prefolds and be very comfy...hmmmmm.

yeah I have between my WHs, Prefolds, and AIOS like 45 changes as well and only 12 of them are AIOs.  I'm thinking the AIOs won't get used much.  And hey, if they leak on H because he is too lazy to use a fitted with a cover, then maybe it will be incentive for him to branch out a bit.

I have some Kawaii P&N... anyone have experience with those?
I hate pockets because I have sensory issues with stuffing, but other than that, they are an awesome dipe!  This reminds me, I need to scope out some deal on Kawaii GNHWs!

  • I loved my NB BGs! But I also loved NB alvas (snaps, using bamboo inserts), and a lot of people hate those. And I had a bitty baby.

Kawaii PnNs were fine, but huge and bulky on a NB. We used them for ON, and by the time they were unbulky enough for daytime, she was fitting into some OS, as well.

While BF DD as a NB, I read back through the CD board as far as it would let me go. True story. Learned everything I've needed to know. :)

  • Thank you ladies for all your advice. I think I will have to go with a newborn trial package to see what brand works best for my little guy when he comes. Has any one used or heard of Jillian's Drawer and their new born trial rental? It looks like an ok deal but I would rather find a local Saint Louis Store that has a similar trail.
  • The AMP brand! I like the one size duos so they fit from birth til potty training. You can use them as a AI2 or a stuffed pocket diaper. I lay the double layered hemp insert (tri-folded) inside the diaper cover and if the cover stays dry I use it again! A friend of mine stuffs them for her son's daycare to make it easier for them. They are great. You can buy them online or find a retailer through their website!
  • I didn't start until DD fit into my OS stash, so I don't have any advice for NB dipes. Our most reliable are BG 4.0's w/snaps. I really like my Sunbaby pockets, but I already had a snap fall off.

Side note: I have a handful of BG aplix that are busted. I replaced the waist tabs using the kit they provide, but some of the front loop strips are bald. Has anyone replaced those? I asked on the CD board & got crickets.
  • I love stash pics. Too bad mine are just in a gigantic heap!! I love prefolds with a cover for nb days. We are a mostly BG elementals house though - I hate pocket stuffing.
  • We did GMD prefolds and thirsties covers for the NB stage. Never had a single blow out in that combo. I had a few Bumgenius AIO's that we used for nighttime changes. This time I'm ditching the AIO's and going with fitteds for nighttime instead.

  • I did the Jillian's Drawer trial and I highly recommend it. Unless you have a local CD group with a loaner stash, I don't think you'll find another program like it. Each kid is different (and you're different too) so I've found that no single type of diaper works for everyone. The trial lets you try several common varieties so you can explore what you like before you make a huge investment.

When DS1 was little, we started with a lot of pockets and AIOs because that's what we were comfortable using. Now that he's a toddler and we're more versed in cloth, we use prefolds/covers at home, pockets/AIOs for daycare, and fitteds with wool covers at night.

If you want to get into the fitted world, I highly recommend Twinkie Tush. They're highly absorbent (and adorable) and the owners are wonderful people who have started and grown their business locally (US manufacture) and are very active in the community.

  • @busterbeagle - would you recommend the aplix on the thirsties covers all the way through toddlerhood? I love the ease of the aplix, but was worried that as the kid gets stronger, they might be able to pull it off easier than the snap version.

I've only had the new aplix for a few weeks, but so far I would say yes. Even our cover with the old aplix is great. We've had problems with our aplix BGs (resulting in the "no playing naked in the front window" rule being broken) but she's never been able to get a Thirsties off yet. It's pretty tough stuff and probably requires as much fine motor skills as unsnapping snaps.

  • The Thirsties Duo All-in-Ones (size 1) worked with us and our newborn. We couldn't start her in CDs until she was a few weeks old because she was so skinny and they always leaked around the legs. These were great (we did the aplix/velcro ones) because they got really snug and were easy to use as all-in-ones. Plus, she was a heavy wetter and you can easily stuff an insert into them like you would with a pocket diaper.
Now that she's older she is in mostly BumGenius 4.0 pockets and BumGenius Freetimes for night. She is still a heavy wetter, so we don't use the microfiber inserts that come with the diapers, but rather we use a cotton flat that is pad-folded and inserted into the pocket. Very absorbent!

It's an absorbent fabric insert that you add to a diaper to increase the level of absorbency. Very useful if you have a heavy wetter or for overnight. Hemp is a popular material because it is extremely absorbent for its mass.

  • @rachelCA29 - you can order them in a 4 pack from their website, which I did. I wasn't prepared to commit to a big pack, and I sure as heck don't need that many more dipes anyways! I have friends who use them and like them, and I like that the inserts are supposed to come out in the wash - added bonus!

@gertiebarden - a doubler is exactly what it sounds like: it doubles (or at least increases) the absorbancy of another main insert. They're sometimes also called boosters.

@frasey I just looked at those little "bundles" and I might try that if I decide I want more pockets. I know they have new fabrics/patterns coming out for 2014, so I might hold off to see what those look like!
