Are you stocking up on diapers?

I started buying jumbo packs of diapers at 12 weeks. I'm hoping to stock pile enough to not have to buy diapers for a loooong while after baby gets here. If so how many of each size are you buying?
So far I've only gotten 1 pack of newborn (my DS was nearly 10 pounds so I don't think we will use newborn too long) and about 200 size 1 diapers!

Re: Are you stocking up on diapers?

  • I want to but feel clueless as to how many of each size to get, FTM here. Also what brand to get or even what store has the best deal??
  • Loading the player...
  • Ive been looking for coupons and using those to stock up when sales hit. With my DD I had a great stockpile.
  • We are. I'm kind of using this as a guide. Also I've heard that babies are in Size 3-4 the longest.

  • I want to but what if that brand doesn't work for the baby? Are you guys just getting a bunch of different brands?
  • I need to start doing this. I'm also a little confused on size since I'm a FTM and have no clue how big or small the baby will be.

A friend of mine told me ShopRite always has great deals on diapers, even better than Sam's or Costco. Could be worth looking into if there's a ShopRite near you.

Regarding types of diapers - would a safe bet be to buy the "sensitive" diapers from the get-go, or would it be a waste of money? I would hate to buy a bunch of regular and then find I can't use them for whatever reason (I have no reason to assume this will happen, just normal FTM brain I guess).

  • I've had a lot of people recommend pampers so I've started stocking up on those. I registered on their website and you can enter codes from each pack to earn points redeemable for coupons, etc. I think I have three boxes and then a smaller package of size 2 and 3.
  • I've seen a thread where 90% of the ladies said Pampers worked for them so that's what I'm buying. I'm not opening anything until we know what will work. We are also going to have a beer/diaper party for all hubs coworkers in his platoon. They're all excited about this Baby too lol.

  • I am, to an extent. I bought a box of newborn and a box of size 1 (Pampers) they were on clearance at Target for $20 and they were normally $35. Then I bought the Target brand - two boxes of size 2, they were $25 each and came with a $15 gift card. I only really buy diapers right now when they are on clearance or come with a gift card, and mostly at Target b/c they seem to have the best deals.

For DS, we only ever used Target brand or Pampers - those worked the best.

  • I buy pampers swaddlers for newborn and size 1. After that I use luvs. They worked awesome with DS. I figure if they don't work or I have too many of one size I can exchange them.
  • I'm doing cloth diapers and have been "gifted" several sets from friends who are done with having babies. We don't know the sex yet (a couple weeks to go!) and the diapers are definitely gender specific--with things like cupcakes, rainbows, trucks, and trains as covers. It'll be funny one (s)he's here! We'll see how willing we are to bend gender rules for practicality.

  • I didn't only because my kid didn't fit certain brands well. And of course, I couldn't know that till he got here. I am allllll about saving money though!

  • I started a stockpile this summer, before I was on thebump and realized that my baby might not fit well in Pampers.  I bought Pampers because my coworkers love them.  I used coupons, and only bought them when I had a fantastic deal.  My best purchase was at BJ's warehouse for size 1 Swaddlers.  I used two coupons and got them for 11cents per diaper.  Ideally you want to pay no more than 15cents per diaper. I also got a great deal at CVS, by using their store coupons with the newspaper coupons.  I haven't purchased any diapers since I got pregnant, because I have a decent pile.  Let's hope baby loves Pampers!

  • We only grocery shopping maybe twice a month. We'll grab a case. But we're not stressing about it.

  • Haven't yet, but will start soon. I used Pampers swaddlers when DS was born and they were the only ones that worked. All others he leaked through as soon as he peed. When he got older we could use Luvs and those were ok.
I am buying more newborn this time as we only have one box and DS was in newborn diapers and clothes until almost 3 months.
  • Every mom I've talked to has raved about pampers. So we've started getting the swaddlers. We haven't bought boxes yet, but will grab a jumbo pack on sale at shoprite and there's almost always pampers coupons online or in the paper. I've been getting sensitive and regular. Also stocking up on wipes (hoping they keep as long as we don't open them)

  • My grocery story had $3 off a box of pampers, plus I had a $1.50 off coupon, so I bought a box of swaddlers size 2 (they were the only size they had in the store). I plan to keep checking the sales/coupons.
  • Since we are talking about diapers which ones did you ladies who BF like best for preventing blow outs?
  • No. I didn't with DS nor DD and won't with this one either.

  • I like the idea but I'm with the camp that says I would have no idea which brand would work best/ what size I would need. Would you be allowed to return diapers 10 months later even if you had a receipt? I feel like it would be past the time of return.

  • @saraphaerie I am going to try cloth diapers at home-I really want to stick with it, but a few daycares that we have gone to interview with have been a little effy on cloth diapers so I don't know what to do. I have a coeworker that used cloth diapers on her daughter and swears by them! She is actually going to make me a few (shes an amazing seamstress) I can't wait to try them and DH is excited in the fact that it'll help us save a few bucks. And @jshrop my DH was thrilled about the diapers and kegs party I wanted to throw him-it may have been about the keg, but free diapers are not so bad either haha

To reply to this thread-we have not bought any diapers, although my MIL has bought some everytime she goes to the grocrey store, but we are not worried and will figure out what we want to do officially wether it be cloth or disposable with baby N when he/she gets here :)

  • I'm the last one of my girlfriends to have a baby and they each had their own opinion about pampers and huggies. The one who had a girl only had good luck with pampers, and the one with a boy hated pampers (they always leaked with her boys), but loved huggies. I feel like with all of my friends that huggies work best for boys and pampers work best for girls. My sister has a boy and only uses huggies as well. To each his own though and you have to figure out which works best for you.

I'm a FTM and I have a collection of huggies I've been stock piling for a while, to be honest it's an entire dresser of shampoo, baby powder, diapers, etc. I tap into it for baby showers and then just replenish it on my next round of super couponing! :) Get a head start and sign up for Publix's baby club if you shop there, you'll get coupons every quarter for baby needs as your baby grows.

if you're interested in stocking up on wipes right now, Amazon has a deal for 600+ wipes for 0.015 a piece! less than 0.02 is a STEAL!! Check out Amazon mom too! Sorry, I'm a couponer, I love saving!

  • Definitely going to stock up on diapers. At our baby shower for DS my cousin asked everyone to bring a pack of diapers for a raffle. We had a ton from that and my other cousin gave us tubs of leftover diapers from her son. We didn't buy diapers until DS was wearing size 4s. It really helped a lot.
  • I used the cheapest diapers I could find with DS and never had a specific brand that I sought out. I've found that they REALLY range in price (up to $1/diaper-craziness!) so I get them on sale. Costco/Sam's seem to have the lowest non-sale prices, and they rarely go on sale. But my best steals have been BRU brand (on sale AND free wipes AND $10 back for every $100 spent) and Target. Make sure you join the BRU loyalty club. When we found them for 9 cents each (our previously cheapest diaper price was 14 cents each) we cleaned out the store and bought as much as would fit in our car. We took them out of the box and stored them under our bed. We didn't have to buy diapers for almost 9 months. We bought a lot of size 1, less size 2, and a lot of size 3. He went right into size 1 from birth, the newborn size are teeny tiny.

As for wipes, we never pay more than 2 cents/wipe and wait for them to go on sale :)

  • I'd be too nervous to buy a ton of diapers without knowing what works best. We use cloth, but even with those I didn't invest in a full supply before I knew which type worked best for us. You can always put aside money every month and buy them after baby gets here.
  • I've been stocking up! I coupon so whenever I find good coupons and pair them with good store deals, I will buy a pack. I've been buying mostly 1s and 2s.

  • Don't stock up toooo much bc you never know what LO will need! 1st and 2s are a pretty safe bet but it's hard to say how many they'll need. I like pampers bc DS likes to play "poopsplosion," where I am always the loser. Pampers keep him from going through 24 outfit changes a day.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

No my last baby did 2 boxes of size 1, 1 box of size 2. Then size 3 from then on. He is a year old now and we just switched to 4s.

  • Can anyone tell me if amazon mom is cheaper than Costco for pampers? Or what is the cheapest for pampers?
  • I haven't started stocking up just yet, but when DD#2 was born, we had 1200 size 1, 400 size 2, and 600 NB size diapers. She was 4 days overdue and weighed 6lbs, 6oz, so for the first 30 days she wore preemie size diapers! We didn't have to buy a pack of diapers until she was about 8 months old.

I did last time (my first) and was so happy I did. If you get too much of one Size, you can always exchange a case for the size up, and you won't miss out on sales!

We, like you, bought 1 bag of newborns, and then two of the biggest cases of 1, 2 and 3. Our stockpile saved us a few times, especially when DD was 1 and DH was between jobs.

Edit: We only bought Pampers, since my experience with my baby brother was that Huggies suck and ALWAYS leak (we just recently tried Huggies on DD... no idea how they stay in business).

Also, DD was 8lbs 8ozs when she was born, so she didn't even use her whole bag Of newborns, and we used both cases of each size, so 2 of each worked for us.

  • My husband and I have talked about this and we want to buy some just have not started. I am hoping to this month. I would say to start with a couple box of each size and then check on the weight on the box and go from there. It might help you deiced how many you need. Also might want to stock up on wipes we plan to this way we do not have to worry about them to much either.
