2nd Trimester

Sudden Fear of Flying??

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else experienced this... on Wednesday, I am flying to Boston for work (it is a day trip so I will be home before dinner!) and I am 27 weeks pregnant with our first child (its a girl).

Last night, I was sobbing on my husbands shoulder with the deepest sense of dread I have ever felt before.  I was so scared something will happen and of leaving my husband alone... has anyone else had this happen, an sudden and near uncontrollable fear?

I feel better today, I feel much more rational, it is safer to fly than to drive the 40 miles to and from work that I do everyday, plus there were terrible storms in Chicago this morning.  But still wondering if it is just hormones or maybe I am crazy :P

Thanks!!

Re: Sudden Fear of Flying??

  • I think it's the hormones. I had a 30 minute cry-fest a few nights ago because I felt my hubby cleaned the bathtub wrong. :) When I was pregnant with my first, we flew when I was 12 weeks along. I was panicked and nervous the ENTIRE time. I kept thinking what if we crash, what if the pressure drops and the oxygen bags don't come down. I mean...I've been flying my whole life. Never been scared, until I was pregnant. I think you are normal and you are going to be a GREAT mom. :) Sending you lots of hugs!

I left on a little weekend trip to San Francisco by myself and totally cried during take-off because I was scared something would happen to me or our little nugget! I was just way more nervous than I've ever been, I think it's the protective, maternal, hormonal instincts kicking in :-)

  • I totally just went through this last week!

I have a toddler that has been flying since he was a newborn, and I've NEVER had a problem. We fly to Denver about every 6 months or so from Philly, no problem! For some reason, we flew to Palm Beach to visit family and I freaked out!!!! It's only a 2 hour flight!

We hit just the smallest bit of turbulence from thunderstorms and I started crying. I'm a fairly frequent flyer and have never experienced this before. I think you're right... It's probably the protective, motherly instinct. I suddenly felt like I was putting my son and pregnant self in danger while on the flight.

The flight attendant was super sweet and said she actually see's it happen pretty frequently. I think what helped me was seeing all the people flying in the airport the day we traveled and how excited my son was during take off... I hope this gets better too. We're flying again in August to North Carolina!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have this flying aversion so bad.  I'm not sure why either, I'm not even planning on flying anywhere.  I tried to explain this my MH and he thinks I'm crazy.  To me I would rather drive then fly right now.  I'm not thinking it's going to get any better any time soon either.

Thanks everyone!  I am glad I am not the only one.  The feeling seems to have subsided, though we will see how I feel when I get on the plane tomorrow!!    Thanks again :D
