Making your own baby food

Sorry if there is another post about this elsewhere... I scanned but didn't see one... Any of you guys make your own baby food? I made a bunch and now we're at "stage 2: introducing meat and mixing foods together". I'm not one who normally mixes foods together... I was one of those kids that kept everything separate on my plate, and I still sometimes do that though I've been trying to break that habit... I don't want DD to grow up like that... Anyone know of good mixtures or a good website to get recipes for baby food?

  • Loading the player...
  • For lunch or dinner I give him sweet potatoes, chick peas & chicken. Sometimes I mix the chick peas & chicken together
  • The links above are great but also stalk the product page of Plum Organics and Ella's Kitchen.  They have great combos :)

  • I do. We choose foods we already know are safe (from previous jarred food watching). My husband made a beef stew for Christmas. She'd eaten everything before except the beef. We blended up enough for 5 bottles of 4oz each. That girl absolutely LOVES it. When I went to my moms we gave her mashed potatoes and blended up carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. Leftovers make great baby food :D

  • I usually make baby food out of the book - the one I love and use is Cooking Light First Foods. I've used it for both of our kids, another one to check out is Cooking for Baby. As for online, I like weelicious! Lots to discover there.

  • I am doing a mixture of purees and BLW but mostly BLW. My son is loving eating a piece of what we are eating!!  This was a helpful website: https://www.rapleyweaning.com

Tonight for dinner he had a finger of pork which he sucked on and chewed a few bites of, some home made sweet potato french fries, some steamed zucchini sticks and pear slices for dessert!

  • Children will be tempted to eat what you are eating they will not enjoy there own food given to them separately so keep a separate bowl when you are eating  and mash let your baby enjoy food .
  • I've tried to follow recipes, but I find that it's easiest just to use whatever you have on hand or whatever makes good compliments with other foods.

I always do a protein, a veggie and rice or pasta.

Sweet potatoes pretty much goes with everything and is so tasty, so is carrots. These tend to come in bags so you can't use them all at once but they keep fresh in the fridge for days. So I'd do...

    1. Breakfast: carrots and sweet potatoes, maybe add a little rice cereal
    2. Lunch: Turkey, sweet potatoes, rice
    3. Dinner: Beef, carrots, pasta

If I have a 3rd veggie, like spinach, I'll do spinach for one of the meals instead and save some sweet potatoes for next week. you'll get into a groove and then before you know it, you'll be a pro. :) Good luck!

  • oh I forgot to mention I usually do a fruit first thing in the morning, and that tends to help my baby poop later in the day! :)
so for Breakfast, I'll give him a veggie and a fruit... so for example, a bit of rice cereal and mix in carrots and apples or sweet potatoes and apple. you switch things up a bit every week of course. so sometimes it's pear and spinach, or orange and carrots...

  • We make our own food, as well, but I do the same as the PP and go through the aisles of the baby food section and get ideas. I check out Gerber, Plum Organics and Ella's Kitchen and follow this website https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com
I buy frozen veggies and mix them together, as though, we would. Peas/Carrots; Broccoli/cauliflower, Blueberries/Strawberries; Peaches/Strawberries.

  • My son's absolute favorite is apple cinnamon raisin oatmeal. Boil 4 chopped skinless apples, 1/2 cup raisins, and a pinch of cinnamon for about 8 minutes, toss in 1 cup dry baby oatmeal and boil for 1 more minute and toss it all in a blender.. Makes 2 ice cube trays. Its his everyday breakfast plus a scrambled or hard boiled egg yolk with yogurt.
  • Yea we do fruit for breakfast and veggies/meat for lunch. Dinner is formula and we also put oatmeal with it sometimes.
