Onsie of the Future

A coworker just shared this article with me, and i can't help but thinking this idea is pretty awesome!

I guess some people argue it's an information overload, but i think i'd like to have something like this!

What do you guys think?

  • I agree with the article that the concept is similar to monitors/motion sensors (so really, it's not that far out there), and I think it's pretty cool! I don't know if I'd actually use one, but I think it's a neat invention.

I kinda like it. Of course I'm planning on having LO sleep in our room for the first 8months or so, I wouldn't get much use out of it. We did the same with Dd and never needed any kind of monitor. But it's a clever idea for babies that sleep in the nursery from day 1.

  • Look into the Snuza monitor. It's an apnea monitor that clips on to baby's diaper. It doesn't tell you temperature or anything like that, but it alarms if baby doesn't move/breathe for 20 seconds. Same idea as the angel care monitors but much move convenient/portable.

  • While I see why this would be useful for some. I don't like it for me, I would feel as if my LO was in the hospital constantly hooked up to monitors. However, I will not lie, DD shares a room with us. I would wake up every couple of hours and stare at her to make sure she was still breathing. That was exhausting!

This sounds like something I might want to look into! i think knowing there would be an alarm if something was off would let me sleep much easier.

  • First thought that popped into this STMs head: It is a neat idea, but how would you clean it when baby had a blow out?

Also, that looks like à Carters onesie to me...with electrodes added.

  • Awesome! I don't think it would be a good thing for me though. The anxiety that comes with that amount of monitoring... I think I'll have enough stress without all of that!

  • SIDS scares the crap out of me. And because of my job it probably seems much more common to me than it actually is.

I literally did not sleep (unless DH or my mom had DD) until we got the Snuza. I loved it and used it until she was about 8 months old and started taking it off herself. Then, I accidentally washed it with a pile of her clothes. I already bought a new one for this baby.

scares me too. both my DH and I both know couples who have gone through that nightmare in the last few years.

  • I think this is pretty cool! Not sure if I'd use it, though but maybe.

I am planning to use that mat that alarms if they stop breathing because I too would be the mom standing over the crib watching her kid sleep if I didn't have SOME kind of monitor. SIDS just freaks me out too much.
  • mrspopsicleI had never heard of the Snuza until you mentioned it and after googling I think I want one.  Did you just clip it on to her diaper at night?  It didn't come off at night?  Thanks!!
  • I don't want to hook my baby up to anything that transmits over wifi...it is like being hooked up to a cell phone.  There are movement sensors that babies don't have to wear.  No thanks.

that's a good point, though i think there's definitely a difference between wifi signals and cell signals.

@Hedgessm  Ours did fall off a couple times if I didn't get the diaper on snug enough.  You just have to learn how tight to have the diaper.

I do have to say, I really do think that the Snuza saved my DS...we had an occurance when he was 4-5 months olds where it went off (we'd had false alarms before when it fell off), but I went racing upstairs and went I got into the nursery and put my hand on him he wasn't breathing.  My touch stimulated him to start breathing again and I had to reset the monitor.

It is a pain when it false alarms and you have to reset it and you're praying it doesn't wake the baby...but since I do believe we had a real incident, I'd rather have a baby that was awakened by the alarm then a baby not wearing the monitor and something happened.

Just reading the reviews on the Snuza helped to seal the deal for me when I chose to buy it...and we didn't buy it till DS was 8ish weeks old...I wasn't sleeping knowing that he may stop breathing, etc.  Also DH wanted to move him into the nursery and I wasn't willing to do so without the monitor.  We got a Snuza Go.

Ours became loose in the night a handful of times, but she was never once woken up by a false alarm. The key was making sure the diaper was on snug. Also, it did not work well with the huggies newborn diaper that have a cut out for the umbilical stump.

It's tiny - maybe the size of an egg but obviously much thinner. The tip is also nice and soft so it never seemed uncomfortable resting against her skin, even after she started turning herself onto her stomach to sleep.

I loved it. Even though we were long past the peak of SIDS incidents, I actually had a lot of anxiety about stopping, but around 8 months she was just moving around too much in bed that it was coming loose or she was pulling it off several times a night.

ETA: I think there are several companies making similar monitors now. I had a great experience with Snuza so I didn't shop around but mighty be worth a look.
