Rollercoasters and Waterslides

Does anyone know how long you should wait after delivery (assuming no complications and a normal recovery time) before you could go to an amusement park?  I'm due June 20th and we're thinking about having a family getaway to an amusement/waterpark in August or September sometime and I'm wondering if 6 to 8 weeks would be enough time for me to heal and enjoy the rides--again, assuming no complications and a normal recovery.
Thanks ladies!

  • I think it depends on 1) How you feel, and 2) If you have any stiches/tears that are still healing.  For #2 I'd just check with your doctor about chlorine/bacteria.  Otherwise, if you feel good, go for it!  You can always take it easy and not do the extreme rides.  Damn,...now I want to go on a lazy river...

  • It's going to depend on you honestly. It wasn't an amusement park but at 6 weeks post partum I was feeling great, packed up my apartment, and moved cross country with my 6 week old DD. I was running through the airport, sat the whole 5 hour flight, and then when we got there had way too much luggage for the car so the only way for me to get in was to crawl over DDs car seat.
Anyway, the point is I had a vaginal delivery and three stitches from ripping and at 6 weeks I was feeling fine. Obviously everybody is different though. I would ask your OB to see what they think.

  • Too many "ifs" for me to say just schedule it. I agree with PPs that it totally depends on how your birth and recovery go.

    I would not.
DD was 2 weeks late. I had an uncomplicated birth and was even discharged just 10 hrs after giving birth, however, I tore and needed stitches. 6 weeks later I was still bleeding a little and my vag was in no shape to stick a tampon up it so that I could go in a pool or something. I was also still figuring out the whole nursing thing. At 6 weeks I felt like DD was constantly on the boob and there were days I would go around the house topless because I was nursing so often. Plus I was so exhausted at 6 weeks I could not imagine having the energy to go on a vacation to an amusement park.

  • For me, I would. Both my previous deliveries and recoveries were pretty quick. I was feeling fine by 6 weeks PP. With my first, I stopped bleeding around 2 weeks and was fully healed from my tear at 6 weeks and with DS I stopped bleeding around 3 weeks and was again, fully healed by 6-7 weeks. I'm assuming it took longer with DS because I was also chasing around DD and not resting enough.

This is definitely a play it by ear though. If you're feeling good, go for it! If not, maybe next year.

  • We are actually looking at an indoor water park now so I don't think the water rides will be too big... If I'm still sore I may just float around the lazy river all weekend! =)  Thanks for the advice ladies!

For me, I would would have been fine with it. I had my DS in Jan and I was out and about 2 days after I got home. I also had an episiotomy and was in the hospital for 5 days. So, It really depends on you and how you feel. I wouldn't book anything until after baby is here.
